Gay marriage is legal in Minnesota thanks to Republicans

    http://nation.time.com/2013/08/01/th...-in-minnesota/

And I mean that. This article pretty much shows what NOM,Minnesota Family Council and bigoted Republicans can't bring themselves to admit yet.
That their efforts to push a ban backfired big time and led to gay marriage in MN which it most likely would NOT have been made legal there for some time to come.
Bigotry can backfire and Republicans learned that the hard way. THere were other issues as well of course but the ban was the tipping point.

In my own personal experience, years ago, you could have probably called me the most apolitical person out there. I really didn't care much about politics. Now I've started paying attention, and I really shifted gears in the last Presidential election. I've become more outspoken and opinionated, and it's most likely because of Romney, Gingrich, and Santorum. As soon as I move to Washington, I'm registering to vote and will no longer sit back and watch the country do what it does without me at least having a say in it. I bet a lot of other younger, eligible voters such as myself went through the same thing last year, and finally got off their proverbial asses.

I got soured on politics when 'evangelical' Christians decided to follow the tactics of the '60s left and got into politics. I got brought back to politics in large part because they got so good at it and so theocratic that they had/have to be opposed by Christians who know what the Gospel is about, because they do not.

By abandoning the Gospel, they have brought themselves failure in both the spiritual and the political realms. For the latter, I rejoice.

In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

There is an old saying about the ends not justifying the means, but I think this may be an exception to that saying.

It would only be an exception if supporters of marriage equality had helped fight for the ban as a strategy to eventually pass the law.

Here's Minneapolis' local newpaper's take on this:

    http://www.startribune.com/local/218016231.html

Lots of midnight ceremonies in county courthouses across the state. Minnesota has 87 counties.

The WBC (of course) came to protest.

I'm thinking of praying that one of the federal bridges the GOP doesn't want fixed will collapse under them soon.

It should be noted the bigots are already pushing for a ban but the earliest that will happen will be 2017.
I will say this,I hope the voters that showed up last year do so next year, several brave legislators (espescially the Republican ones) risked their careers for this vote.
Many of them come from districts where they barely won and the vote for the ban was very high.
There have already been attempts at a recall for a couple of the DFL's and the Republicans in the house and the lone one in the Senate are all facing primary challenges.
They showed guts when they didn't have to and I hope they will be rewarded for that.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is DFL? I looked in the Urban dictionary and found:
    DFL Dunce For Life
Which could fit quite a few GOPpers.

Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party. Makes no sense to me but that's what it is.
On a side note, reading through the twitter feeds of the people who voted yes, have to say one of the Republicans who voted yes appears to be of the Anthony Kennedy mode where he has sympathy towards same sex couples but a giant middle finger for the rest of the targets Republicans love ot hate.

When you live around here you regularly hear about the Minnesota DFL party and forget that it's a local term.

As a Minnesotan who worked with the campaign during both phases, the Republicans truly had no idea what they were getting into. Minnesota prides itself on grassroots organizing, especially with progressive causes. The day after the amendment was approved by the legislature we were on the ground ready to go. By election day we formed the largest grassroots movement in the state's history. Many thought that we were moving too fast in pushing for marriage equality so soon after defeating the amendment, but we knew we were ready. Witnessing the first weddings at midnight was nothing short of amazing. Seeing our victories has made me witness strongest sense of joy I've ever seen.

Minnesota needs to begin exporting that grass roots organization mentality. Can you start growing more Minnesotans and start sending them out to the other states in pairs like the Mormons send out missionaries?

We are already doing that in a way through our Camp Wellstone trainings which happen all over the country.

I think that the two beefy Minnesota farm boys standing on the front porch would be a lot more fun. Oh well. I guess I can't be too picky, at least the information is getting out to people who want it. I will have to look up the Camp Wellstone training.

We may not always have good choices but people must vote at the very least. I am American and now a dual British Citizen. There are so many similarities to the states here. My Barber talks constantly about what the Government does wrong so I said do you vote. He is 57 and said I never voted in my life. I then said while I am in here do not ever talk to me about how bad the gov is you have no right you do not vote your a non-entity. Now and then he starts and in front off all the guys in the shop I say the same thing you ahveno opinion you do not vote!

Well, no we don't always make the best choices. If we need any reminders of that, I only have to say Bush I, Bush II, and Nixon. REALLY not the best choices. But we do vote, and through that act alone, we claim the right to bitch all we want.
