Three time Welterweight and two time Middleweight Boxing champion Emille Griffith has died. The New York Times put his obituary on its front page this morning. It's an interesting read about a compelling, gay man. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/24/sp...pVJa/UK24IIdGw
Griffith is best known for the third time he won the welterweight title in a televised match from Madison Square Garden. Rumors of his homosexuality were common in the boxing world. The title holder at the time, Cuban boxer and then champion Benny Paret, taunted Griffith about his sexuality at the weigh-in, calling him "maricone," Spanish slang for a homosexual.
On the night of the fight, in the 12th round, Griffith cornered Paret and delivered a devastating series of punches. Paret went down and was brought to Roosevelt hospital, where he died 10 days later.
A number of years ago, I saw the documentary mentioned in the article. Griffith had a very sad life after that fight and never quite recovered. He became an alcoholic and, when he was older, suffered a severe beating outside a NYC gay bar that nearly killed him. The injuries he sustained in that beating appeared to be the main cause of his death.
