    Cicadas are singing this morning

A lot of people find them annoying, but I quite enjoy their 'singing'. One of those summer sounds which take me back to my youth.

Luckily, the big BOOM we supposed to have in the south went over like that preacher that "predicted" the end of the earth.

    Any relation to Jon Cicada?

I know my nephew had them in parts of central N.J. I just listened to what they sound like on YouTube.Noisy little buggers.

I was driving down the Garden State Parkway with the top down a few weeks ago and I heard this strange sound and I thought I was having engine problems (belt issues or something) and it turned out to be a gathering of cicadas. Loud suckers.

Lucky, I remember another swarm of cicadas that came 7 years ago. They were supposed to come to the D.C area this year (apparently), but that turned out to be all hype.

In south Minneapolis the cicadas are so loud in the afternoon you can't visit outside.

They came around here and were really loud at the end of June early July---but they are mostly dead now---they reappear every 17 years---they were big and creepy looking---big round red eyeballs.

I miss hearing the cicada. We don't get the incredible broods that emerge in the east and mid west North America on 17 yr cycles. There are always a few cicada every year here but hey are much smaller and lime green. No massive number filling the night air with so much sound. But the Katydid can get pretty noisy compared to other areas and it last into Nov.
They are very cool bugs and you can't help but being nostalgic as you get older and remember the first time you experienced them.

We have only the usual crowd.

I think that the skunks rolled up most of our lawn last year to get the cicada grubs and so we aren't swarmed by any means.

It is a sound that takes me back to when I was 4 and on the farm with my grandparents and life was worry free.

I thought it was only me in the South of France that suffered from their incessant and strident "music".

There is an orchestre of them just outside at the moment. Luckily one becomes accustomed to continual noise; such that now I hear them but they don't drive me beserk.

Erm, up until the moment I saw this thread, I thought cicadas were plants.

I thought cicadas were those big tropical bush-like plants with a wide thick trunk and large sprawling thin leaves radiating out from the top. Resembling a bit like a cross between a giant pineapple, and a short squat palm tree. Anyone know what I might be meaning?

As for what I've just seen on YouTube I'd have called them giant locusts.

Needless to say we don't get anything like that in the U.K. hence my confusion. Wierd-looking things.

I was about to say the same about Canada - never knew what they were though I have heard the word. I've never seen or heard one.
But apparently we're both wrong: obviously they have them in Ontario. And when I was googling to figure out what they actually were, it appears the UK has a New Forest Cicada.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte.

Here they are called "cigales" and are copied in numerous forms for the tourist market.

In over 20yrs living here I have yet to see a real live one.

08h30 and they have just started "singing". I believe it is something to do with the temperature.

It was so calm and peacefull this morning whilst I sipped my first cup of coffee on the terrace.

But isn't there a minimum and a maximum where they start and stop?

Also why do they never stop? The "singing" is to attract a female isn't it? Surely at some moment they must tire of making their noise? But no, they go on incessantly all day long.

There is a minimum and maximum, but it varies with region and species. And the singing is, in fact, to attract a mate, but not all of them find one, so they keep on trying. It's the only reason they're there in the first place. Same with crickets. Ever had one in your home? They never seem to get tired and stop, either, and they're very good at hiding.
