How about more masculine colors? The background looks more fitting in an interior design app.

Good work but that's my advice

Background color should be basic. Less its more if anything a 2 tone gradient.
Make a Black Bar where Statics and Dynamics are and write em in white.

That's a quick example and looks a bit nicer with a bit more simplicity. Obviously can be other color but it was just a quick thing. Hope it helps.

I agree the pastel rainbow isn't appropriate for engineering. I'd try chrome, grays, blues, and black.

That looks cool. Did you just draw it out? Or did you take it from something?

I did it myself on photoshop and that looks way better right there sir. NICE

I am more interested in seeing "under the hood" so to speak. The splash page is OK though it could be more dynamic! For example when a user hovers over the bucky balls do they "clack and bounce". I know some would consider those cheesy effects but for this they would enhance things. But, I'm betting the page is pretty static. No pun intended. The problem with a lot of engineering is that is dry to begin with. Your app should help liven it up for an enhanced and possibly more effective learning experience. "Wow ..look at that Frame ...let's make a FBD!!!!"

    LOL

Looking better try to do the circle buttons and add your images to it on the center and add a push button animation and click sounds and you'll be golden. Also use the grey you had on the other image instead. That will look classy :P

http://i.minus.com/iR3BWjyDA9LSx.png A quick fix to mine to look similar to the grey color.

I would maybe add some faint engineering blue prints to the background, but in a way that it didn't clutter or confuse.

I think you should try them in the "drafting blue" colour, under the circles, just floating with no outline box around them. And like I said just a bit bigger than before.

Also, most of the user interface is crammed into the top left corner of the screen.

One of the most annoying things as a computer user is having a 17 inch laptop or a 21 inch monitor at work and some piece of software is designed to look great on a 640x480 screen from 1993.

The first design at the start of the thread suffered from this problem (why are all the icons stuffed into the top left corner?) But as you updated the design it got better even though things are still kind of biased to the top left corner. The blueprint image kind of fills in the empty space too, which provides visual balance.

Mostly thought it looks like the empty space at the lower right is there to allow for more icons. Are you going to use the same kind of design again in other places in the app? It would make sense if some other screen will have the same look but more icons. Maybe this is the main index but each chapter will have a screen full of headings? If so then keep the design the same from one screen to another, and use that space in the lower right when you need it.

But if this is the only screen like this in the app, use more of it.

What if, or could you give the buttons a glass texture, and some shadow?

Do you have to use the clip art in the buttons? I would drop that for just straightforward text in the button.

Ok ,to be blunt .. this started as a disaster.

Meanwhile you improved a lot though.

    A few pointers:

    - the text is too small
    - don't use italics
    - the icons are too detailed/delicate, should be something simpler
    - "dynamics" is not adjusted to the middle of the black bar
    - the black bar obstructs the background. you could use an opacity gradient to make it a bit smoother
    - the big blue bar is distracting, if this is intentional due to the trial version, you should make it at least smaller (one liner)
    - i don't like the blue circles with the font below. it should be in the circle or you should choose another shape.

I know how much it sucks to deal with design as a programmer, but it is a neccessity Try to get your hands on a book about UI design to learn a bit about the basics.

Thank you for your effort. I really appreciate it. Couldn't have gotten this far with the design without you. But the glass button is a bit much. I want it to look nice, but I don't want it to look like an interior designer got a hold of it.
I'm not offended! I've been known to go too far in art/design myself, and sometimes need an outside critic to reign it in.

... and basically, I'm just throwing out idea's. It is ultimately YOUR project, and I fully understand it's up to you to pick and choose the pieces you want. I'm pretty flattered you've taken the advice from me you have. I never expected you to take ALL of it.

Should I make the gradient color more professional looking? If so, how? What color do you think will work out better for the background?

My apps are designed for touchscreen tablets.
My opinion is that you should tone down the colours as they can tend to obscure what is important on the screen

The icons are terrible. Get rid of the clip art and make some simple vector icons. Or, use type only.
The buttons look clunky. If you go with simple icons, you probably won't need a background shape or border.
The buttons should be left aligned, not centered. Align them with the left margin of the header type.
Add more space between the header type and the buttons. Everything is vertically cramped.
The blue bar at the top is too bright and distracting. Get rid of the hyperlink blue and go with a grey or black. Put the text on one line and eliminate the separate button. Can you make the entire bar a button? Or just make the button background the same color as the bar.) Try putting the bar at the bottom. Or simplify and place a "Buy Now" button in the upper right corner.

    Zombie, one word of caution:
Design geeks really like "flat UI" right now.

Basically any part of the user interface that looks like something, or that looks pleasant, or that looks touchable, or that has any qualities of realism to it is, as Orwell would say, doubleplusungood.

Anything that looks like a symbol from a 1970's imported home shelving unit do-it-yourself assembly manual is "good design."

It is a hideous fad and I can hardly wait for it to go away. It has already been overdone, but probably it will take a few more years of things getting worse before the designers revolt and we get a nice bit of baroque backlash.

Anyway do not please the design geeks. Please the user.

I think that looks much better and more professional. I can't tell without seeing it full size, but make sure the button type is large enough. And, this is nitpicky, but the Trial Version button could use more space around the text (especially on the top and bottom). I'd also give the headers more vertical space and center the type vertically, too.

Also, you might consider adding the product name/company logo to the top left or bottom right corner.

My hatred for Win8 is from my own (limited) experience with it, and I'll admit, my own ignorance(s). I grew up using Win 3.1 through Win95, Win98, WinXP, and Win7 ... which were for the most part similar. Win8 to me is just TOO different, and it's too hard to navigate around in for me. Part of it is my refusal to take the time to learn a totally new Operating System. It's NOT what *I* would call "user friendly", and I'm getting more and more aggravated at some of the stuff Microsoft is putting in their software to 'think for me'. And I used to be able to customize a hell of a lot more than I can now.

The Kindle Fire pad I have was a gift, and while it's great for surfing, it's not good for a whole lot else. Typing is way too slow on it for my taste, the file/pic saving and retrieving is awkward, and the apps for it are mostly cheezy kid games geared toward scamming addicts out of $$$ for extra lives or hints. It's also extremely limited on customization and what video content one can watch on the internet... "Plug-In Not Available".

I'd just pull out my HP, why bother with a web gadget?

But if you insist... I'd set it off with a tiny (red?) border. Or even make it float, if you know how to do that.

Also even when expanded to full size (1366*768), the damn operator symbols are too small for, ahem, aging eyes! It's almost impossible to tell the difference between the decimal point and the subtraction symbol.

Yes, you make perfect sense. I'm curious about your previous feedback for a floating calculator, though. How long ago was that feedback? Newer browsers handle that sort of thing much better than they used to.

"Dock" the calculator and have it appear as an easily accesible float seems obvious to me. But perhaps I'm missing something?

I love the muted color scheme: blue, white and grey. Seems to me you could sneak in a little dark green, as needed, for emphasis.

You need a small "site map" at the very top of the page to denote Where You Are.
    E.g., ZombieKiller's physic's page >> Concepts >> Friction >> Pulleys and Friction

PM me if you'd like to discuss in more detail. I'm enjoying the exchange and the physics are fun, too!

I hope the float works. I have never used a tablet, so your explanation of how to hold the tablet while trying to use the calculator makes sense.

I see your point at how it could become annoying very quickly. Do you understand my idea of letting it float, but also being able to 'dock' it as a small side tab that slides in and out -- upper right-hand corner -- when not in use? That's why I think it ought to be set off with a tiny red border -- the tab could also be red and very easily picked out.

Speaking of borders, this is where the dark green could come in handy. See the "Sample Problems" on the left navigation bar? Surround that by a thin dark green border. Do the same with "Show Solution". You could use green for the calculator, too; but I think red would be better -- but don't use red for anything else.
