I Absolutely Love LGBT Pride Parades.

So much vibrance, so much diversity, so much love.

Yesterday, I was able to secure a press pass to photograph the LGBT Pride Parade in New York, freely moving from within the parade instead of being held to the sidelines. I loved every minute of it.

I will have a ton of pictures to share.

I must say what really hearts me are some of the anti-gay statements made about parades here on JUB. I hate that people bash these parades for being loud and flashy, simply because that's what parades usually are--loud and flashy. What I found funny about the parade is that even though every float tends to be highlighted by crazy costumes, drag queens, etc., nearly every single float that passes has all these guys surrounded by men and women in T-shirts and jeans. An easy 90%.

Nearly every single person who comes to this board and bitches about Gay Pride parades have never been to one and simply are no better than our detractors. No, scratch that. They are our detractors.

Yesterday, I saw young, old, all races, masculine, feminine, androgynous, gay, bi, lesbian, trans, so many beautiful people who fit under the queer umbrella.

There were no shortage of gay allies, senators, the governor, the mayor and various mayoral candidates. People for all kinds of nice causes, corporations showing off their rich LGBT staff. It was fun. It was family. It made me unbelievably happy, and it saddens me when folks here (or various other parts of the net) anonymously throw bogus claims they can't back up about how awful Pride parades are.

I can't wait to share my photos with you all.

    Well said.

When I was young and dumb and the local pride parade was maybe 200 people in a city of a million, I used to complain that it shouldn't be all drag queens and ass-shaking gogoboys all the time. A friend of mine said if I wanted to tone down the parade, I should go buy a suit and march in it - nobody was stopping me. Damn good advice.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

I'm already planning to go to Atlanta's pride, and like you, I believe it should be an EVENT - so i'm NOT going in just a t-shirt and jeans.

Can't wait to see the pics!

Yet, at a time when gay rights are advancing, pride parades are in decline.

Your soapbox imputes the opposition with motives and malice that are not true for all who do not find the pride parades an effective or apt celebration of homosexuality and gay rights.

That you enjoy it is great. That you start a thread as a gripe and argument removes the need for any detractors to come running: you accomplish the same reduction of our unity by your eagerness to be parted of those who are lesser gays in your book.

It looks quite like different shades of gray, like so many rival popes excommunicating each other. Nice job.

It's ever ironic to portray one's cause as the defender of all things inclusive while campaigning to exclude a faction (and one that is defined from without) of gay men. Rather than truly celebrating the parades in a positive manner, this thread is nothing more than a pretext to launch a fight, to beg an argument. What vibrance indeed.

I'd love whatever figures you have that state that parades are in a decline.

As for "lesser gays," I am calling no one a lesser gay, but I have absolutely no qualms in calling people out on their bigoted views even when--especially when--they are borne of internalized homophobia. People on this board have been saying things that simply are not true about LGBT Pride Parades.

I'm fine with skipping the parade, but I do love going to Pride Festivals... can't really explain why, just something in me enjoys being there.
LOL me who's not out (& thus shouldn't even be going) . me who's shy & used to have some fear of large crowds .. and yet I go to Pride

To be sure, I'd like to find a source of attendance data that was anything more than PR or hype. Whereas it is doubtlessly true that this year's time of the Supreme Court decisions boosted 2013 attendance, locals at pride events have been reporting declining attendance for some years.

I think larger venues like NY, Montreal, Chicago, and others are so large that it isn't a factor, or at least isn't noticed. However, in towns of less than 1,000,000 souls, it is easier to see a big year vs. other.

When Googling for data, I did find 2012 articles about declines in Weho and Brazil, but they were atypical types of stories.

It would be more telling to hear from JUB members who attend what the trend is away from the megalopolis. I live in a town of 700,000 and have live in one of 300,000, and both are seeing shrinking pride events.

It parallels the decline in gay bars and clubs.

I missed the St. Petersburg Florida Pride parade but I went to the festival afterwards for the 1st time ever. So much diversity in shapes, ages, ethnicity, % of clothing covered in the people in attendance.

There's also various vendors/groups set up shop ranging from LGBT friendly churches to social interest clubs to helping domestic abuse victims.

Attendance increased this year, exceeding projections, the landmark DOMA ruling being a possible reason.

I have a photo of Miss Columbia. Love him. Incredible New Yorker. Not only the Mermaid Parade, but I've seen him in the Puerto Rican Parade, the Dance Parade, and even the Chinese New Year's Parade. This man walks parades like it's his job.

I actually have a picture with him once from when he showed up at the beach I go to.

There is an interview of him on youtube where he said he is an engineer by training and showed a masters diploma from NYU. He lives in Elmhurst, Queens.

I knew he lived in Queens, but not that he was an engineer. WOW.

I'll have the pics soon, trying to figure out the best way to share them without linking to my Facebook. What's sad is that some of the strongest photos I have are from the fun kids who were in the parade. JUB's rules won't allow me to share them.

I believe you can post links to outside albums.

Why don't set up a temporary account on a photo-hosting site that will cater to JUB - just for the occasion.

You can link to that and still post your favorite thumbnails here so as to not bog down the JUB page loading.

It's tough because gay people are trying to get rights so everyone should "be on their best behavior" but truthfully, haters gonna hate. Why try and sway people who may not even be able to be swayed?

As long as Pride remains a celebration and not an open buffet for people looking to get fucked, I'm good with the concept. I just get disheartened seeing LGBT Youth marching in the parade followed by literal strippers booty poppin' on the side of an SUV.

I only heard about it on the day and I thought, dammit! If I'd known about this, I'd have made a day-trip up to London and gone to see this!

Pride Days are great, it's a really good atmosphere. Brighton Pride Weekend is usually late July/early August and is a fantastic day out, I love it! It's a load of fun and all the guys you see with their shirts off, nothing beats that!

I've already got my ticket for this year's event.

I've been to only one Pride Parade, but have also gone to 5 Pride Festivals (might make that total 6 this month .. or in September)
Have never been to an after-pride party (as far as I know there no official ones in the cities where I went to Pride's)

In a way I'd be cool if you could go to a Pride every couple weeks in the summer
