What's the point of an avatar?

What's the point of displaying an avatar on JUB if you change it more often than you change your underwear?

I usually recognize members by their name (handle, or whatever you want to call it) than their avatars.
    I don't see the problem.

I feel like citing Shakespeare on this one.

But, because personalities can change, and an avatar can be a reflection of that change, for starters.

And yes, i'm "guilty" of changing my avatar as much as I see fit. Monthly, or every 1000 posts. I also change my signature and signature quote with it. Gives me something to do, and maybe it intrigues someone and annoys someone else. All in a day.

Most people keep the same avatar for months if not years.

I change mine every 5 minutes because i fucking want to.

Re: What's the point of an avatar?

Changing your avatar may be OK for strong personalties like you Bender, Mouf and Seeghers.

But most JUBbers have such hazy, grey personalities that most times I feel as though I'm talking to a ghost-filled room. Like for instance I think there's three Catholic Canadians named Mike, but I'm not sure.

    You don't have underwear

I think avatars can be influencial. I see Gsdx's avatar of diver Alex Departie and I just like responding to his posts even though his avatar has nothing to do with who he is as a person. I have no idea what he looks like but he's got Alex there and I don't mind responding to his posts. But that's an isolated case and I think Gsdx will agree that we don't have any real bond.

It's a chance to express yourself.

I don't want anyone to think my avatar of Sean Cassidy's photo is of me. It's not. I might have had George Michael as my avatar but basic membership does allow moving images

It's fun. Some people use an avatar for easier recognition than just a username. Others enjoy looking at it themselves and change it often. We see our own avatars a lot more than anyone else's (unless you never post) so some of us like variety more than others.

I've been on here long enough that I'm used to looking at usernames, not avatars or signatures, to recognize members.

In most gifs you can see the start and end of the gif , but I cant find that in yours.

I would change mine more often but I am lazy. I was looking for a good one of Chaka Khan a while back and then I got sidetracked and forgot about it.....

I had one of Lily Tomlin at one site for years...it is funny how people react to avatars sometimes. I got alot of comments on Lily from people...apparently she has more fans than I ever imagined...I thought there were just a handful of us

I often rely upon avatars to identify a poster, especially when I'm scrolling up or down. I identify avatars more easily and quickly than the names.

Anyway, I like my avatar... and if I changed it, I wouldn't be able to change it back without making a new one, because I lost the original file due to a hard drive crash.

Right mouse click on your avatar. Pick "save as..." and resave your own pic.

I've only had two avatars in 10+ years.

    Both have featured John Belushi.

The first one was from the Blues Brothers Era.

The present one is a plainer, simpler Belushi.

As I resemble him somewhat, that's why I chose him.

Sometimes it's fun to see how a different avatar can change the tone of both your own posts and others's responses to you.

Avatars mean a lot of things - the impersonation of their character/personality, things they like, or just random things they consider cool. At least I like to think of my avatar expressing these things, whether you get it or not.

Besides, I get bored with one picture for too long a time, so I just switch it regularly every 500 posts.
come now, my child. if we were planning to harm you, do you think

Re: What's the point of an avatar?

I have two avatars that I switch between occasionally.

The first is Lonely Soul at Night by Liquicity. I feel that it captures my contemplative side, as well as my love for liquid music and solitude.

My current avatar is a self-pic I took last year. While I was away, so many of my close friends from JUB decided to self-delete or have stopped posting actively. Upon returning, I found myself feeling a little bit like the guy at the party standing in the corner by himself. I don't really share pictures of myself on JUB the way many of the regular posters do, but I figured this avatar might humanise me just a little bit to those who don't know me and encourage them to interact.

Personal tangents aside, an avatar doesn't have to be an identifier or an image reflective of one's inner self. There's nothing wrong with somebody putting up a different hot guy every day or a random picture they find to be aesthetically pleasing. There are still many ways for them to be identified outside of having a 'signature avatar' (their username, their personality, their writing style).

I imagine that the reason some people change their avatar daily is because they want to. Good enough for me.

While I enjoy the creativity and variety of the changing avatars, the unchanging ones are so much easier for identifying people quickly.

I've had only about 5 since I joined, and the newest is here only because of Lefty's passing. I'm not sure how long I'll leave that one up, but I'll probably restore the one Chaz and I made soon. I make all of my avatars and signatures, usually from a photo I've taken, so they tend to show something about me.

I'm glad that posters change their avatars. The more often, the better. It can be a good indicator of their interests or mood of the moment. I get mighty tired of looking at the same ass pic or cock pic on someone's avatar year after year.
