I appear to be healing much slower lately, cause for concern?

Over the past month, i've had several injuries, typical stuff, cuts, bruises and a sprain. They are nothing unusual when i've gotten them in the past, but they have definately been taking longer to heal lately. Aprrox 4 weeks ago, i woke up from my sleep with a sprained neck. A pain in the neck lol, but i'm no stranger to sleeping funny and WILL get them every so often. Thing is, they are cleared up within 48hrs max. It has taken 3 weeks for this sprain to heal. And when this coincides with a couple of huge bruises that i don't even recall how i got them, taking days to develop and then weeks to clear up, and cuts which seem to be healing slower too. Well, it does make me wonder what may be going on.
I've done some searching online, and the basic examples coming up are in relation to either diabetes, lack of iron, or lack of calcium.
I ruled out diabetes, since i took a test a few years ago, and besides, even if i had a low blood sugar, i'd never suffer when i have such a sweet tooth lol. I get plenty of sugar.
I ruled out anaemia, since i had that as a teen, i know what the symptoms are, since the whites of my eyes are not yellow and nor are my fingernails, i'm pretty confident its not that. I then ruled out lack of calcium, since i consume far too many milk products for that to be feasible in any way at all, milk is my alcohol!!

I expect the 'go see a doctor' response as standard, but if anyone has any other ideas that may circumvent the need to, i'd be happy to hear.

Mitchy, I feel I must disabuse you of your understanding of diabetes. I have type II, and can assure you that it can present itself at any time. Get a blood workup at your local Doc's and discuss the issues you are having. If you consume so many milk products and vast amounts of sugar, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find you have metabolic issues. Go to a Doc, now, my friend, and best wishes for doing better soon!

By all means see a Doctor. Your understanding of diabetes is off base. It is not a matter of low blood sugar, and cannot be solved with more sugar. It is a failure of the pancreas to produce insulin to process the sugar in the system. A test several years ago does not resolve the question, as adult onset diabetes develops later. I am not saying that is your problem. It will take a Doctors exam.

Ok. I thought diabetes was something you were born with because i understood it to be a lifelong condition. So its something you can get at any time, but can't cure, that more accurate??

I'll be sure to make a dr's appointment soon to find out the cause. I don't like going though. I feel that from past visits, my ails were trivial and wasting time. I had a pain in my chest once, turned out to be a pulled muscle. I felt a little embarassed actually that i went for that.

There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 is gene based (like me) since both my great grandpa and grandpa passed from diabetes complications, so I have a family history. Type 2 is due to inactivity or overweight/diet etc.

My housemate got diagnosed with it last year and she's being keeping watch of her diet since. (She's overweight)

Visit a doctor and see how it goes

Not to dissuade you from going to a doctor, but I can somewhat relate. After a certain age, I've noticed I need more sleep, can't go as long without food, need better food - no junk, hang overs are worse and last longer on 1/4 the amount of alcohol, and general physical abuse to my body takes longer to recover/heal.

Hate to tell ya Mitchy... we're getting old. It's all down hill from here.

When you do see the Doc , make sure and ask him to do a Full Blood Count , as well as any other bloods , the fact that you are noticing bruises , but not recalling how or when , plus the fact that they seem to be taking an awful long time to clear .

Another wee tip , next time you go to the bog *soz guys* take a look at the colour of your urine and the consistency and colour and smell of your stool .

    You stay well Mitch...................

Okay let's stop freaking him out about Diabetes, shall we?

One symptom alone is not enough to be especially concerned about it....... however I do agree that you should talk to your doctor about this, get a physical, and get blood work done.

There are many explanations possible, as well as it being just in your head.

    Good post .
But , bruises do not happen on a regular basis without the person knowing even vaguely how they managed to get them in the first place .
Plus the length of time taking to heal does seem far to long , so i do not think it is in Mitch`s head .
As you say Diabetes is being tossed around a lot , when it may well be something totally different , hopefully nowt to be alarmed about .

A physical or lab work? Hmmm, that would be never. Never had a full medical. The only tests i've ever had at the docs was blood pressure checks. Generally i've never been too ill of health to require any tests.

Lol, i like the idea that it is all in my head. Always the best diagnosis. Beats it being anything unwelcome thats for sure.

Well, you can guess what I'm going to say next.

The symptoms that you describe are features of normal aging however, because this is a change and because you have had the crick in your neck for more than a couple of days, it is time to check in with your doctor and have a physical done. It may be that there's nothing serious wrong but if nothing else, it will give you some baseline values for your labs so that twenty years from now when you do need the services of a doctor, you'll have reference values from your youth.
