    Armed Citizen Project: Free Shotguns

The Armed Citizen Project - "Deterring Crime by Empowering Neighborhoods" - is spearheading a drive to make shotguns available to selected residents, including single mothers, in the Houston area. It expects to continue the project in other cities. The project will also train the shotgun recipient in the use of the firearm. The recipient must pass a background check.

In New York City the project will be expanded to "homeowners."

His privately funded group wants to give New Yorkers in high-crime areas a $200 shotgun and free weapons training — assuming applicants pass all the legal background checks.

Apparently not illegal. Seems responsible, once you accept that more guns are a solution.

Just how useful - in terms of meeting the exigencies of a break-in or rape - will a shotgun be?

They should put out shotguns in racks along the streets - like the bike sharing programs.

They could put extra guns in high crime areas, to help protect those areas more.

The problem with America is we don't have enough guns.

Why do these idiots think the answer to everything is to put more guns out there?

Big Sis thinks she needs a big army. Maybe she knows something we don't. Perhaps we all need guns?

I wonder if they have to agree to not sell the weapons. It would be interesting to see how quickly a Mom turns that master blaster into cash and in how many cases.

For those of you doubting a shotgun because of the length, I can assure you if you can get a handgun up and accurate in the same time of duress you can raise a shotgun especially after trained. With the shotgun you only have to aim on the same side of the room to stop most of the mass of an intruder. I would much rather have a shotgun... mine would be sawed off and have a duck bill though.

The reason they chose the shotgun is because it is less likely to go through a structure and kill someone not involved on the other side. It is also a weapon of choice for close in defense. the duckbill spreader opens that defensive area up by a few feet on each side.

I want to ride thru the projects and get a bus load of young black men and see if we all can get some guns and free training. See how quick we get asked for ID, SSN finger prints and a background check and told it will be a wait.

There's a company that sells a home "alarm" that's basically a recorded of a pump-action shotgun being racked. It's supposedly one of their most effective deterrents to criminals.

Jeff Foworthy (or someone similar) once made a joke about adding "Sadie, hold the dog till I shoot 'im!" after the shotgun sound....

Yes. And as the company I mentioned above knows, just the sound of a pump-action shotgun can scare the crap out of an intruder.

Unlike the cops in Florida when I lived there who went in with their SWAT weapons and killed a kid in the house across the alley when a bullet went through furniture and two walls, there guys are thinking about downrange.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "
