56-Year-Old Lesbian Heckles Michelle Obama, Instead of Her Peers

I seriously don't know what this lesbian was thinking she'd accomplish by heckling Michelle Obama, the wife of a democratically elected politician in a democracy. (The president doesn't make the laws of the country, woman.) But, she interrupts her...for what?

She should be heckling people her age and up. They're the last holdouts for marriage and social equality in society.

    Ellen Sturtz

Saxby Chambliss, a Georgian politician, recently told a reporter from Politico that he didn't give a shit about them, with "them" being gay people. Where was she then? Michelle Obama is a private citizen. Chambliss, unfortunately for gays in Georgia, is an elected politician.

Selective outrage here. And it accomplishes nothing.

Are gay people this desperate that we don't challenge the bigots, but instead harass the people on the right side?

Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

More of your predictable age discrimination suggesting that marriage and social inequality is determined by a number on a birth certificate?

Heckling public speakers is a right in all democratic societies. It would be a disaster for democracy were that right extinguished.

Had I been present at that event I would not have heckled Mrs. Obama.

Again, heckling anyone gets you no where, you just get bad press and made to look like unstable. She can't "make" the POTUS do anything and pissing her off won't get her to talk to him about it, lol.

I think Michelle handled it quite well.
I would love to see the video of it. To see how the crowd reacted.

    So what?

I'm sure that Jack Springer and Benvolio would heckle Obama. At the very least. Just because the woman was a rug muncher doesn't mean dick.

One thing that some in the Gay Community CONTINUE to forget is that not ALL LGBT Activists are Obama supporters. Some Gay Activists don't care what The President has said & done in favor of Gay Rights. The Activist had every right to Protest, but the 1st lady doesnt have to stand their and be shouted down disrespectfully...No one has to take yelling and screaming at an engagement like that...I don't blame Mrs. Obama for threatening to leave...

Heckling is a Right but you don't have the Right to do it on Private Property without an invite...

How come NOBODY caught this on Video?...Not ONE News Network showed footage of the event..Were the Cameras kept out of the Fundraiser by Obama's staff?

Found such actions lack of respect towards the first lady. Look what has been accomplished in the gay community under Obama.

Mr. Canada, you don't know me at all.

I'd never heckle a US President. If given the opportunity I would ask him difficult questions.

However, I can you see rolling over on your back, peeing like a little puppy if you had the chance to meet Mr. Obama.

MM, surely you've been paying attention to how the Administration treats the press. They have a pool reporter who is allowed limited access to an event like this - video is rarely if ever allowed. The press pool are closely watched and escorted out after the Administration official talks.

Here's an audio of the confrontation. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...ve-fundraiser/

Back in 2011 pool reporters were locked in a storage closet during a Biden fundraiser.

You're missing the point here: this woman's (Ellen) issue is with another woman, a private citizen (Michelle Obama), that is actually in favor of her being a full-fledged American citizen, while she totally ignores people like her (read: older Americans) who are the LAST group of people to still hold bigoted beliefs against gays and lesbians. My message to her is to look at her peers first before she gets impatient with other people, especially when these other people aren't standing against gay rights.

This makes no sense. If she wants to heckle people, heckle bigots.

They pretty much were forced to toss the lesbian out of the event, which was probably well deserved. I understand Ellen's frustration, but if she's into heckling and protesting, please heckle the protest the bigots please.

I've learn to not talk to trolls that are nationalistic. Said person comes to threads to talk about and rip the US which is fine. But the one time you mention something about a country needing to toss a monarchy, which shouldn't be controversial for a so called "progressive" (and in 2012 too), he gets his panties wet and starts PMSing.

Don't get me wrong, I understand this woman's frustration, but towards an ally?

And I'm sincerely sympathetic to older gay men and women as they had to deal with these people. But c'mon...Michelle Obama? Really?

There's a certain way to behave at public events, and yelling at someone while they are speaking is not that. It doesn't matter if the speaker is a Democrat, Republican, or whatever - you sit your ass down, and behave like an adult. Then afterwards, you can say your peace during the Q & A session (if there is one), or approach the speaker in an adult manner and ask them your question respectfully. All this heckler did is make herself look like a fool and hurt the gay rights cause. Michelle doesn't write policy, and to assume that screaming at her is going to spur Obama to do something is completely asinine. MLK didn't advance the civil rights cause by hollering at Jackie Kennedy, now did he?

Obama said he would sign an executive order, banning federal contractors from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

    He has not done so.

    That is Ellen Sturz's complaint.

It is unfair to target the first lady for the failings of her husband. She is, after all, not a legislator and has no authority to do anything at all about gay rights.

But, she is an obvious representative of her husband, and needs to expect to be heckled, so long as he continues to ignore our rights.

Executive Orders can be easily repealed by the next President, so it's a temporary move at best. Obama is good for playing the long game: Repealing DADT took a while, but he did it, and reversing the repeal is next to impossible now. ENDA is the better and more permanent route.

Some people need to learn some goddamn patience. (and tact - you heckle those that refuse to hear your message, not allies willing to hear you out if you don't act like a fucking dumbass. When you scream at someone in the middle of their speech, don't be surprised if they take you to task for your asshattery.)

With all due respect, this is bullshit: guilt by association (Michelle being the wife of President Obama) and heckling people that are on your side. From my seat, I see an older woman complaining about not having rights she should have when it's her ilk that have her in the position that she's in now.

As Ann Coulter says about democrats, you can say this about Ms. Sturtz: "Punish your friends and reward the enemies."

Isn't AARP's headquarters in that part of the country? Go protest there please.

(BTW: Michelle Obama was at a lesbian couple's home for this fundraiser...my goodness.)

I don't think T-Rexx was necessarily condoning this woman's actions--rather, (this is my interpretation of the post) that Michelle should come to expect people that people will heckle her. She is the First Lady, and certain people will jump at the chance to heckle any person affiliated with the administration. Michelle should (and I don't see how she couldn't) know that she's a prime target.

The way I see the post, he's in agreement that guilt-by-association is hokum and that Michelle will continue to be singled out by disrespectful protesters.

I personally think this woman has just cost herself her reputation and any possibility of a private audience with the Obamas. She showed no self-restraint and has made an ass of herself. Even if I misinterpreted T-Rexx's post, I stand by the thought that there will be more just like Ellen Sturz.

You've got it backwards. The first lady would need to arrange for a private audience with Ellen Sturz. The FLOTUS would have to promise to behave herself.

I recognize the name. Ellen Sturtz is an activist of the make-a-scene-to-get-attention variety -- so there's no surprise she'd pull something like this.

She may represent Get Equal, but she needs to join Get Civil.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

The Washington Post gave this woman a soapbox for her nonsense. Thankfully, though, the readers writing in are ripping her to shreds.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinio...497_story.html

    Serious...why is she impatient now?

    I love the opening paragraph:

When Barack Obama was running for President in 2008, I thought he was serious about protecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community from workplace discrimination. He made two key promises — that he would sign an executive order providing workplace protections by federal contractors, and that he would help pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), ending workplace discrimination by all employers. I contributed to the campaign, expecting that if elected, he would keep his word to fight for our community.
In 2008, President Obama was officially "evolving" on the matter, first. Second, yes, he as a black man knows nothing about discrimination. Third, despite deciding to be the first sitting president to openly support gay rights, he drew his line of support for gay people at gay marriage *roll eyes*. Anything more than gay marriage, like workplace discrimination, he's not for.

This woman is so misguided. The responses in this thread are refreshing. We see right through her.

Ohh... this is saying that she'd confront Michelle Obama again. I got news for her...Michelle Obama is 6 feet 1 inches. Ellen might be a lesbian, but Michelle is more of a man than her. My money is on Michelle beating butch out of her.

    Disrespectful.

Here's an audio of the confrontation. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...ve-fundraiser/

Back in 2011 pool reporters were locked in a storage closet during a Biden fundraiser.

"A group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans issued a statement saying, "LGBT people in North Carolina, New Mexico, Ohio and all over the country are dehumanized in our jobs, and we are forced into the closet in order to participate in the American dream."

The statement said, "We value the first lady's leadership and invite her to lead the charge within the Democratic Party to end employment discrimination. President Obama has an executive order sitting on his desk that can protect a quarter of the labor force in the U.S. from workplace discrimination. We will continue engaging leaders in the administration and the Democratic Party until President Obama fulfills a promise to our community made five years ago."

Jack I wish I had seen your Link prior to hearing the audio on TV...

Corrections I need to make about LGBT Activist Ellen Sturtz. I said she was a protestor on Private property without an invitation. Ellen was indeed invited & paid $700 for the fundraiser meal (That she didnt get to finish..LOL..I would have told some Damn body to make me a Doggy bag after the Secret Service drags me out of the building..I WANT my $700 Mash-taters & Green beans.....LOL)...Anyways she was where she was suppose to be. Ellen had every right to stand up and Scream out denied Rights that have been over-looked by The Obama Administration. Mrs. Obama also has rights. When she's invited to private events she can choose to sit or stand while an Activist YELLS his peace or she can choose to leave...That's the Bottom line...

I simply Feel that Ellen & other LGBT Activists need to pick the right time & place to Battle it out. Know who your true Enemies are & know when to take the Fight to those you help put in Power because of their stance on Equal rights for All Americans regardless of race, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation or disability.

The only thing that stands out for me is the brilliant response from Mrs Obama. I loved it.

The rest...I defer to Kallipolis's equally brilliant response.

    Doesn't matter.

A promise made has not been kept. The president could easily do this. He has not.

Laws can be relatively easily changed by the next president, too. Does that mean we should not pass laws?

If this had been Laura Bush, you would be cheering Ms. Sturtz for striking a blow against the Bush bigotry.

Of course Mrs. Obama is not responsible for policy. So, of course, it is unfair to target her. But this is not about fairness. It is about making a statement. It is about getting someone to listen to you (who appears to be deliberately ignoring you). Apparently, it worked. We're talking about it here, aren't we? My guess is that the president got the message.

Michelle Obama is the wife of the president, and a representative of the administration. Were she not, she would not have been speaking at that fundraiser.

As far as "heckling people who are on your side," if the president is on our side, why has he not signed this executive order?

If someone promises me a piece of gum now, or cake if I wait an hour later, I'd rather wait for the better option. An EO is like putting on a bandage on a gaping wound, rather than waiting for an ambulance to take you to hospital for treatment.

Yes, he did, but he evolved on the subject. Joe Biden didn't "push" Obama to support gay marriage, he just blabbed Obama's plans to the public ahead of time.

Some laws take time to get pushed through. The government doesn't work as fast as we want it to. Deal with it. Also, it took a loooong time for African Americans and women to get equal rights, and it's going to take a long time for us too. Not everything good comes easy or fast.

If you read what I posted earlier, it doesn't matter what the speaker's political slant is. There's a certain way to act when people are speaking, and you don't attack your allies. I may not agree with Mrs. Bush's politics, but she seems like a decent woman, and as the President's wife, she is to be treated with respect when interacting with her. Effective activists know when and where to make a scene, and attacking an ally isn't it.

The message that got across is that some gay rights activists can't pick their battles properly and want attention to the detriment of our cause. I could send a message to homophobes by burning down the Westboro Baptist Church, but that would reflect badly on the gay community. If Ellen had waited until after the speech to ask Mrs. Obama her question, she could have gotten her message across without coming off like a ranting buffoon. Acting like a lunatic Teatard doesn't work.

Remember when Martin Luther King got equal rights for black people by yelling at Jackie Kennedy? You don't? Well, neither do I. Obviously, yelling at his wife is totally going to convince Obama to do whatever Mrs. Sturtz wants. Just like hollering and throwing shoes at GW Bush got him to stop the war!

The only reason he "evolved on the issue" and made a calculated political almost perfectly timed announcement is that he needed to energize the liberal base so they would actually turn out the vote. Up until the announcement the far left was generally disappointed with his performance. Had he not thrown the far left a bone...we might be discussing President Romney today.

Only in this case, the cake is not an hour late. It's five years and waiting.

In other words, the president is refusing to put a bandage on the wound because, in a few years, an ambulance will eventually be along deal with the wound more comprehensively.

He doesn't have much time left to evolve on the issue of gay rights. I guess he hasn't kept his promise because he's still waiting on his evolution.

As you have already pointed out, this isn't a law, and it does not require an act of Congress.

It requires a signature only. A signature five years (and counting) in the making.

Apparently, the president thinks we need to wait indefinitely longer. Maybe we'll appreciate rights more if we have to wait for them.

What makes you believe that the president is an "ally?"

He is refusing to support us on this issue. The only possible conclusion is that he is refusing to support us because he does not believe our cause has merit. That makes him an enemy, not an ally.

And, by your own inference, he becomes fair game to heckle.

We've been waiting to discuss the issue until after the speech for five years now, and it has gotten us nowhere.

A definition of idiocy is doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results. Methinks we are the idiots the Obama administration believes us to be.

President Obama has done more to advance the cause of gay rights than any previous president in history. He has probably done more than every previous president in history combined.

And yet, I get the feeling that he has done so reluctantly. That he wishes we would go away. That he has better things to do than deal with the non-problems of some stupid faggots.

    Beautifully put!

Judging by about 80% of the people commenting at The Washington Post link that I provided, Michelle Obama and the president didn't seem to be considered the ones holding Ellen back from full rights.

I can't imagine being a 56-year-old gay person, living in a country where most are in favor of my right to marry someone of the same sex, except my peers, and when I try to protest discrimination at the workplace, I'm not heckling my peers who the majority don't see me as an equal, I'm heckling the pro-gay rights First Lady of the USA.

This lady is crazy. Her time would have been better used protesting at an AARP event.
