    The 12th Doctor Who

With Matt Smith's announcement that the Christmas Special will be his last outing as Doctor Who, who do you think would make a good replacement?

For my part, my number one choice would be Tom Hiddleston.

I also would not mind Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Michael Sheen.

If there is to be a female Doctor for the first time, I wouldn't mind Suranne Jones or Catherine Tate.

I would be happy if they got someone who actually looks and acts old enough to be a Time Lord.

Well Benedict Cumberbatch was someone who Steven Moffat, I believe, commented that would be a fitting replacement for Matt Smith.

Either way it's usually someone I have never seen in anything, I never saw David Tennant in Casanova or Matt Smith in anything, so I'm open minded.

I'd love for it to be Russel Tovey, but it's not gonna happen.

Even John Hurt would be great, but i doubt he'd want his whole career overshadowed with that part.

A great choice would be James Nesbitt who play Jekyll in Moffat's great adaption.

Could we get rid of Moffat please.

it would be cool if it was a female or person of color, just to mix it up.

I found this past season so lackluster that I'm ready for any kind of change, though I wish they had started by getting rid of Moffat.

Re: Who will be the 12th Doctor?

Well I personally think Moffat is planning to leave soonish. His biggest contribution since taking over was the continuation of the River Song story and since we, or at least me, are being led to believe the Name of the Doctor was the end of that saga he will probably move on.

He has had his moments, for example he did an amazing job Season 5 with the Weeping Angels 2 parter, but overall he has been quite forgettable as a series editor.

Who knows what the future holds for Dr Who.

Firstly, I think I should dispute your numbering Braex. Paul McGann may have appeared in a TV special, but he was never a proper Doctor in any accepted sense, so the question is who'll be the eleventh Doctor Who.

I'd love to see Tom Baker return, but he's almost 80 now and somehow I can't see it.

How about a gay Doctor with hunky assistants? Christopher Biggins would be fun.

I know what you mean of course, but I suppose that since we saw Sylvester McCoy regenerate into him in the movie, then by 'canon' of the series we can say 11 Doctors, soon to be 12.

Ironic then that someone that played the Doctor in two movies - Peter Cushing - is not included, but he was always a side-issue. Those two 1960's movies were among the first VHS releases I had in my collection back when I was 12 or 13.

Utterly off-topic: ULOM, do you hold him in as high regard as Christopher Lee for his work in classic horror films? I've still never watched him in anything expect as 'Dr. Who' in those two films.

Oh and back on-topic: Don't know, don't care. As with Star Trek, these iconic series I loved as a child/teen have moved on and re-booted and re-formatted themselves into forms I'm not too keen on.

The short answer is "no". Peter Cushing was probably in as many Hammer horror films as Christopher Lee, but he always seemed to play subsidiary roles. It's Lee who sticks in my mind.

back in the 70's, they said 12 regenerations (for 13 Doctors total), but they threw that out the window a couple years ago and said it's basically unlimited. I chalk it up to "the Doctor lies" (and the obvious reasons why a successful television show doesn't want to shoot itself in the foot with a forced ending just because of a throw-away line of dialogue 40 years ago)

    1. William Hartnell (1963-1966)

    2. Patrick Troughton (1967-1969)

    3. Jon Pertwee (1970-1974)

    4. Tom Baker (1975-1981)

    5. Peter Davison (1982-1984)

    6. Colin Baker (1985-1986)

    7. Sylvester McCoy (1987-1989)

    8. Paul McGann (1996)

    9. Christopher Eccleston (2005)

    10. David Tennant (2006-2009)

    11. Matt Smith (2010-2013)

    12. ???????? (2014-????)

He will soon have his 11th regeneration - into his 12th incarnation.

    Two final Matt Smith episodes:

    50th Anniversary Special - November 23, 2013

    Christmas Special - December 25, 2013

    (where presumably he will regenerate)

    EDIT:

See - they could STILL go with that - the Master 'cheated' that fate by possessing a new body in the Tom Baker era - I think they could still go with the drama of having the Doctor have his FINAL body and life - and no more regenerations - (the next one after the following one) but then have some exceptional event take place or new manifestation or something.

The new show loves all the fake fate and final ends and purported endings so I thought they would jump at the chance.

I would love Helena Bonham Carter to play the lead but unfortunately like Tom Hiddleston, there's no way she or he would give up a thriving career to do it.

I'll have to keep thinking of suggestions. I agree it's time for an older doctor though

That would be awesome! Hurt would rock as The Doctor. I'm definitely ready for an older doc. I think that rumour just started because of the ending to the last season though rather than anything official

It occurs to me, that all reports have only confirmed that the Doctor will regenerate in the Christmas Special... they could do something horrible and end the Christmas Special on a cliffhanger with the regeneration not actually revealing the new Doctor.

Re: Who will be the 12th Doctor?

I hope it is someone new and totally unexpected, there are some choice hotties in the land of Britain that they can call upon. I had my reservations on Matt but he has grown on me, this season in particular. So whoever they acquire to be the pilot of the tardis, I welcome with open arms.

Oh and will people get over Benedict Cumberbatch already... sheesh talk about overrated.

As for the Doctor's regenerations, I think its true that he has an endless supply of them, although I believe he kind of hints that going over 12 regenerations leads to some kind of vainglorious psychosis!

As for series showrunner, I do not like Steven Moffat as the lead show runner.
He is the Brannon Braga of Doctor Who! A great idea man with 1 or 2 awesome episodes which usually offered cool ideas and setups during the Davies era. For larger series archs, he fails miserably by trying too hard, timey whimey indeed.
    I wouldn't mind if he occassionally wrote an episode or two because I think he genius lies in the compact stories as evidenced by;
The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, The Girl in The Fireplace, Blink, Silence In The Library/The Forest of the Dead. Since then, he has not earned any kind of major praise probably due to the dilution of his talent to organizing a large scale story.
Although someone will argue why he has not been nominated or won any awards for this three seasons is because of his work on Sherlock Holmes, really though. Those stories are based on existing material rejiggled for modern sensibilities and such. Maw!

Anywa, Russell may have been a shitty writer for much of his series tenure but his series archs were exciting and epically fun, campy and sentimental and often emotional landmines. Heck, its why the show was a successful relaunch.

I also disagree about the Weeping Angels comment above, the series 5 re-introduction of them totally weakened them. Its like the Borg on Star Trek, rules were changed for that nemesis to humanize them much the same way the Weeping Angels were given a voice and some silly thing about looking at them, their image invading your vision or some crap. Totally dispelled any kind of mystique about them and let's not discuss the ridiculous chapter in the Weeping Angels saga with Angels in Manhattan... that is like the Spock's Brain of Doctor Who!

Rupert Grint, we need a ginger doctor, Hiddleston could be a great doctor, but he is far too busy to fit in a show like this, same goes for Cumberbatch, Martin and more names that have been mentioned. Cumberbatch and Martin barely have time for Sherlock as it is, how would either of them fit in another show. Moffat needs to leave as well, I'd prefer him to move his focus over to Sherlock anyway, so we won't have to wait another two years for the inevitable series 4.

He already has ties to 'Doctor Who' having appeared in a pivotal role in the third season of Torchwood.

Hopefully he'll bring back some much-needed drama and seriousness to the role which has been sadly lacking ever since its relaunch. Since they brought the show back in 2005, it's been nothing but comedic buffoonery, stupid antics, hyperactivity, manic nonsense, faster-than-lightning plots, and over-acting.

I grew up in the 80's with the old show and the even older VHS releases. I remain first and foremost a fan of the original series (1963-1989) and the first seven Doctors, and nothing I've ever seen in the new series is really going to change that.

That's the very reason it died all those years ago... the over acting and seriousness of the old series. Get over yourself!

As for Peter Capaldi, he played Caecillius in Fires of Pompeii in Series/Season 4. I won't hold that against him, let's see what he does come series/season 8.

I thought Matt Smith was adorable and sexy, in a goofy way. I'm sad to see him go.

Seriously, relax! It's just a show! We have no idea what Peter Capaldi's Doctor will be like! The actor is just one tiny piece of the puzzle for that show! And I've been a fan longer than SOME of you have been alive. I'm still under 39... TG!

I thought the exact same thing about Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. I honestly kinda had a mad crush on both Nine and Ten.

What always gets me about Capaldi is his role in Torchwood: Children of Earth! It was such a tragic role, but so well acted!

And seriously, if you want my analysis, checkout my NEW blog, which I just started, specifically focused on this topic, but branching away into other relevant Sci-Fi related stuff as well. The address is: scificontinuum.wordpress.com (the 12th Doctor posting is the first one at the bottom of the page.

    Thanks!

Peter Capaldi Tapped to Play Next 'Doctor Who'

During a Sunday BBC One special, actor Peter Capaldi was revealed as the latest to topline the 50-year-old British franchise. He'll join the sci-fi series when current lead Matt Smith departs the role after this year's Christmas special.

I kind of liked the unspoken plot line that at each regeneration the doctor seemed to get younger and younger. I guess that's out the window now, not that it was hugely consistent.

That would be pretty silly. So his final regeneration is a foetus?

I'm reserving judgement until I actually see him on screen. He's a very capable actor and I think he'll do the role justice
