    'American Idol' Season 13

It's Official: Mariah Carey Exits 'American Idol'

The singer leaves after a one-season stint on the Fox show, with plans to tour in the fall.

The singer made it official on Thursday afternoon with a tweet by her longtime PR firm, PMK-BNC, that read, "W/ global success of "#Beautiful" (#1 in 30+ countries so far) @MariahCarey confirms world tour & says goodbye 2 Idol." The message was promptly retweeted by Carey.

Nicki Minaj Confirms 'American Idol' Exit

Rapper Nicki Minaj followed Mariah Carey's lead on Thursday afternoon, announcing via Twitter, "Thank you American Idol for a life changing experience! Wouldn't trade it for the world! Time to focus on the Music!!! Mmmuuuaahhh!!!"

Randy Jackson had previously announced his exit from the show, leaving onlyKeith Urban who has yet to confirm whether he'll be participating in season 13 of the Fox ******

The series just wrapped its 12th year on May 16, but by season's end, there didn't seem to be much left to celebrate. The season closer, during which Candice Glover and Kree Harrison faced off for the crown (Glover won), was down more than 40 percent in viewers from the previous year and was the show's lowest rated finale ever.

Speaking on the night of the finale, a high-ranking Idol source told The Hollywood Reporter that Minaj was viewed as "bad for the brand," explaining that, while the controversial star was meant to lure in younger viewers, she ended up turning off many of Idol's core fans, who now average 51.2 years of age.

I'm sure he's whishin' and hopin' and thinkin' and prayin' they don't get rid of his ass too.

I didn't realize he left a very secure gig on The Voice Australia for a gamble in the big city.

    Yikes.

Turning off the core audience in the process...now WHO couldn't see that coming?!!! With Jennifer Hudson's hire it looks like the new judges really will be former popular Idol Contestants...if they get Kelly Clarkson to go along they might have a chance at a revival IF they remember next year it's all about great contestants and powerful stories which makes for favorites to root FOR, rather than sideshows and controversy. If Idol producers on the other hand keep trying for a forced hipness or relevance then take it out of its misery and kill it.

Nigel Lythgoe Confirms 'American Idol' Exit

Nigel Lythgoe has been fired as executive producer of "American Idol." The longtime "Idol" fixture, who briefly went on hiatus from the show during its eighth and ninth seasons, confirmed the news via his @dizzyfeet handle on the micro-blogging site, Twitter.

"Just had 10 days in the Bahamas, rain everyday. I get back to the States and get fired. Sad!," Lythgoe tweeted Saturday morning.

Lythgoe added that he has reason not to be blue -- he's still with Fox for "So You Think You Can Dance," which is stepping up the competition this week: "Monday we choose our top 20. I'll smile again."

"Yes, don't worry. I'm on #SYTYCD. Fox still loves me," he continued. "It's not a personal thing they just feel IDOL needs new leadership after 12 Seasons.

It's Official: Keith Urban to Return to 'American Idol'

The country singer is the first judge on the upcoming 13th season to be announced.

"Keith is going to return to the show," Fox entertainment chief Kevin Reilly told reporters Thursday at the Television Critics Association press tour. "The fans really liked him. Keith is a really funny guy."

There has been speculation about former Idol judge Jennifer Lopez — who was on from 2011-12 — possibly returning to the 13th season of Fox's singing competition series, with The Hollywood Reporter noting that talks on both sides had stalled over money.

While Reilly only would confirm Urban's return to Idol, he said that "most of the thing is true," with regard to Lopez's potential return. "There have been discussions, but there is no deal," Reilly said.

He also said that the new judging panel will "refocus our attention" on the contestants who are competing on Idol, instead of being heavily centered on the judges. Reilly admitted that the marketing efforts may have played a part in skewing public perception and attention.

"It really became too much about the judges," he conceded. "We want some comfortable judges to make it comfortable to view."
Reilly hinted that the current format may be tweaked slightly for the upcoming cycle. "[We] will tinker with the format," he said.
It is believed that Jennifer Hudson is finalizing a deal to become an Idol judge, with names like Will.i.am and Dr. Luke also being bandied about.

In late May, season 12 judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and veteran Randy Jackson announced their departures from Idol. Ratings for the most recent cycle were down more than 20 percent.

Considering the year the show had, and the fact that the rumor mill went WILD with the idea of an all "ex-Idol" judging panel, and the fact that that's no longer happening because they couldn't get Kelly Clarkson on board(in my opinion, because she's got better things to do), yes, there was plenty of doubt.

You're not as controversial with that statement as you think you're being. And considering that Nigel, Ellen, Kara DioGuardi, Dunkelman, Paula and Steven Tyler were all white and left with or without fanfare, I don't think your statement matters.

Jennifer Lopez Advances in 'American Idol' Talks, Will.I.Am Eyed

As The Hollywood Reporter first reported on July 25, Idol alum Jennifer Lopez and hitmaker Will.I.Am are at the top of producers' wish lists for the 13th season of the Fox show, and, according to sources, are inching ever closer to joining the official lineup. Lopez's deal is expected to be signed any day now. Will's, however, is looking a little further off.

Lopez had served as judge for two previous seasons, in 2011 and 2012, while Black Eyed Peas frontman and prolific producer and songwriter will.i.am held a seat on the U.K. version of The Voice.

I think they've managed to put together an even lamer panel than the season with Randy, Kara and Ellen. Jennifer will be all about her "goosies" and playing nice while looking pretty and being boring. Ditto for Keith. I can't see Harry bringing snark or biting commentary to offset the other two. YAWN.

So I guess the producers were all, "Now that Nikki Minaj has scared our white old cougar ladies, how can we put together the whitest most vanilla panel ever to reassure them?"

    Producers: 'American Idol' Making Changes

The producers of "American Idol" said Monday that the show's new season will include changes to freshen it, including expanded song choices for contestants.

After tending toward a fair amount of golden oldies, the show's song list will add more current tunes that the young contestants can relate to, executive producer Per Blankens said.

Former judge Randy Jackson's new role will include leading a workshop that helps contestants deal with vocal and other challenges, executive producer Trish Kinane said.

The talent contest also will introduce a "rush week" that precedes the Hollywood week auditions.

But Kinane told the Television Critics Association that the series is still essentially "American Idol."

Fox's program enters its 13th season Wednesday with declining ratings and competition in the talent genre from NBC's "The Voice."

Yeah I usually stop watching after the auditions. "American Idol returned Wednesday night to once again post its lowest premiere rating ever." 16 Million...not too many show can get double digits. So I think that AI will keep going until they get down to single digits.

Glad they finally got rid of Randy the human barnacle and Harry may have potential as an actual judge, but I still have no idea why they brought back J-Lo, who I STILL haven't forgiven for constantly undermining the most awesome contestant of all time. #haleyreinhart4ever

Actually I am finding a lot more congeniality from the three judges. They all seem to get along, and Harry is great at letting people know they are not great without all the pitchy talk. Last night a kid by the name of Ryan Nesbitt performed and I loved how he looked, how he sang and his presence. Very different looking, very cute and very aware. he made it through. I will be looking out for him.

    This.

Keith seems to try too hard to get Harry to be on his good side. He changed some of his opinions because Harry didn't like the contestant.

With a fresh round of auditions in Detroit, "American Idol" was again the top-rated show on the major networks Wednesday night and gave Fox a comfortable win, though as expected it fell from last week's premiere.

The Motor City visit, kicking off the second week of the show's 13th season, drew 13.2-million viewers on average, down 12% in total viewers from the season opener, according to preliminary figures from Nielsen. Among the advertiser-desired 18-to-49 age group, "Idol" earned a rating of 4.0, down 13% week to week; however, the number is a slight improvement on last Thursday night's episode.

I'm just pleasantly surprised/relieved that America and the judges both rejected Spencer Lloyd. Even if that just guarantees Sam Wolf the victory.

Now where's my buddy slip to help me root for Jessica Meuse who J-Lo clearly wants to sandbag like she did to poor Haley Reinhart?

Unfortunately not watching this season, my dear. I only even looked because I saw your name as the last post.

Out of idle curiosity, I just looked at the list of finalists and these people are all younger than me. Even expanding to the semi-finalists, I'm only the same age as one. I officially feel like a dinosaur.

Wow, and I just saw the ratings at the bottom of the Wiki page. At the rate Idol is crashing and burning, Survivor will be beating it soon just by maintaining. Sad.
