Things to do in and around San Francisco (A Family Trip)

What are things tourist do in and around San Francisco? Is there anything that really sticks out?

Is the gay area kid friendly enough for me to go see it just to say I have?

Well....I would avoid the Castro nowadays...especially if you are planning a family holiday. I can't even handle it and it is hard to get me to even blink when confronted with odd behavior. There are alot of naked dudes...a living example of the effects of crystal meth ... but be warned it is kinda raunchy and it is really disgusting to be forced to look at them and you will have no choice. I hear they were trying to "clean it up"...don't know how well that went. Last time I was there I promised myself not to return...very depressing.

The Russian River and the town of Guerneville is a much better gay destination..north of SF.

What kinds of things do you like to do? I could suggest a walk across the Golden Gate Bridge or a visit to Golden Gate Park. I would also suggest traveling a bit down HWY 1 to Santa Cruz and Monterey for a great day destination. Both are gay friendly as in "non issue". There are alot more interesting things to do IMO. It all depends on what kind of stuff you like though....if you are more specific I might be able to better assist you.

I'd go to Chinatown, The Exploratorium, SFMOMA, and the aquarium. Also, if you can get away from the family, stop into Mr. S.

Visit the Ferry Building Market Place and if it happens to be a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday they have a great Farmers Market.

The San Francisco Museum of Art and de Young Museum always have great exhibitions.

To be honest with you we would be up for almost anything. Two of us are mobility impaired though so a lot of walking would be hard for us.

I am thinking of a trip to SF because out of the 8 of us the 4 adults have all said we would be interested in visiting there. However, we know nothing about the area except there is Fisherman's Wharf . Any ideas would be welcomed.

OK...4 adults and 4 children? If so...my recommendations would be

    Ghiradelli Chocolate Factory Tour

Fishermans Wharf...lots of stuff to see and great restaurants...you can take a trip to Alcatraz Island...go to Ripleys Believe It or Not...lots of different attractions that would be suitable for the whole family...great scenery....

Lombard Street is a must see

Golden Gate Park is a great place to visit as well....The California Academy of Sciences...De Young Museum....Japanese Tea Garden...the whole park is beautiful....

An hour north and you can go to Marine World in Vallejo and an hour south you can go the the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz...another 20 minutes from there you could visit Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

Finally...something (sorta) gay for the whole family...BEACH BLANKET BABYLON...it is a San Francisco Institution....always fun and worth every cent.

Hope you have a nice trip!

If you guys are not up on driving around, I'd certainly recommend riding busses around the city. I did when I was there and it was a great way to people watch.

Stayed on Fisherman's Wharf at the Ramada and there were great shops down there.

There were jugglers/comedians at Ghiradelli Square, and they were excellent. Chocolate was good, too.

I took in plays, chamber concerts, and other performances.

Chinatown is well worth the trip.

Just seeing the hills is a treat.

Hope you have a great time.

That park at the base of the bridge is a real nice stop, too.

Valencia Street from 16th to 24th has some of the best inexpensive ethnic restaurants in the country.

Reading this thread makes me feel like a little kid in a candy store!

What you visit is contingent on:
    1. How much time?
    2. How much money?
    3. Renting a car? (parking is really expensive in the city unless you stay at a budget motel)

All of the suggestions above are excellent, but I would like to add the following:

    *Muir Woods (redwoods)
*Sausalito (right across the Golden Gate Bridge) - great stores, harbor
    *Cliff House/seal rocks
*Palace of the Legion of Honor (Rodin sculptures)
*North Beach/Telegraph Hill (good Italian restaurants)
    *Alamo Square
    *Cow Hollow (boutiques and restaurants)
    *Ansel Adams Museum
    *Asian Art Museum

This may sound really pedestrian, but the Grey Line Tour of S.F. is really good. You get all the highlights of the city and there's no walking required.

Regardless of what you do, have a great time!

P.S. If you would like to visit Alcatraz, you will need advance reservations (30 days or so).

ChrisRobin is right. I lived in SF for many years and the stupid little maps which Grey Line gives away for free are the best! I always kept one in my purse. The buses stop at Union Square and everywhere else, so even if you don't want a tour, ask for the map.

What about Alcatraz? That's always been on my list if I ever get to SFO again. I stopped there briefly last year and got a tour of the kink.com armory. That was amazing, but not for kids, lol. You should see their 55 gallon drums of lube!

Whenever I visit SF, I always take a stroll along Embarcardero St starting from the Ferry Terminal Building to Fisherman's Wharf, and back. I love SF!!!

Stay as far, as humanly possible away from the Castro.

Take one of the bus tours of the city; you'll get to see a lot of the sites and you don't have to do a lot of walking. When I first went, I took the tour and then went back to places in which I wanted to spend more time.

The last time I went, a new law on nudity had taken effect. I did see one guy swinging his balls in the wind but otherwise during the day it is pretty family friendly. Get a picture by the Castro Theater.

If you can, drive across the Golden Gate Bridge into the park in the mountains and enjoy the view; it is spectacular on a clear day. Alcatraz is another cool site but you need to make reservations ahead of time; it fills quickly.

The Fisherman's Wharf area is cool; Gharadhelli's Chocolate is amazing! lol! If you want a great dinner, go to Alioto's on the Wharf and watch the sun set on the Golden Gate Bridge while the boats pull in with today's catch. Lombard Street is fun to see; ride a cable car from Market Street to get some other views of the city (it will save walking up the steep hills).

Embarcadero Plaza (or is it square) is a fun area with good restaurants, some cool parks, and great views. Chinatown is also fun in the day (I'm not so comfortable there at night).
