How would you defend yourself in someone broke in?

You are at your computer and someone breaks in. They are in the room that you are in. How would you defend yourself?

(Lets say you cant use any computer accessories like a speaker, keyboard, etc)

Im feet away from my kitchen and there is a butcher block with knives, but thats too easy an answer.

If the knives were not there, I would use a pan that is sitting on the stove and bonk them over the head. Then kick them in the groin for good measure just in case they thought of raping me ;-) . . which obviously they would want to do after seeing me

And yes, that is me in the profile photo ;-)

I'd hit them over the head with a dildo.

In all seriousness though, i have a metal walking stick left over from when i broke my ankle and i'd smash them over the head with that, repeatedly.

i call 911 if i can, if not i grab something that will act as a weapon if i need it. I start yelling and screaming as loudly as i can. I have a large dog who will bark like mad, but minus the dog, I do my level headed best to get out of the house.

I think about this all the time. I live in a rural area, there are some neighbors but not close by. I have an alarm that I set when I leave the house and when I go to sleep, but I don't set it if I'm just hanging around. I always think of home invasion as a persons worst nightmare....

"I pity the fool" who would dare break into my house. We have two large dogs that are quite vicious and loud, to the point that the mail person does not even come to our door, they live packages on the couch on the porch. If anyone can get through those two, then they would have to deal with me and I am freakishly strong. I also have metal crotches that I have to keep by my bed and desk because I have fibromyalgia and sometimes need them to get around, I would beat the living tar out of the intruder with them. Then I would tie them up and get "third drawer freaky" on them.

Hockey stick for preference, assuming I have time to get to it, starting with the legs; karate training if I don't. Should the need arise, I'm also happy to stab the intruder - I've knifed someone once before.

Re: How would you defend yourself in someone broke in?

I have asked myself this very question, first, it's about mind set... I will not "defend" myself, I will make the intruder defend himself.
I become the aggressor, when we think this way we do not "react" the intruder does.
I do have some training in martial arts, hand to hand would be fun, breaking a finger or two, watching his face grimace with pain, then inflicting more, seeing his eyes look for the nearest exit.
Of course I would use weapons if need be, a writing instrument to the eye or ear does wonders, if we are near the kitchen a face full of pepper straight from the shaker is great.
If he is a young hottie, I might give him a chance to work off his transgression.

I do not accept your given. However it would happen, I'd use my instinct to see the opening I'd need, else I'd capitulate. I figure it's like the passengers on the flight that foiled the 911 crew -- they waited for their chance and moved.

We all have to decide if life or death are worth risking versus our chances of surviving passively.

To be clear, my home was broken into earlier this year when I was not home, but it did not cost me any sleep.

I have a 1.14L glass liquor bottle that I drink water out of, and it's usually by my side. That would make one hell of a weapon! Of course, if the guy has a gun, I'm fucked.

I have a loaded revolver, S&W, 357, silver tip hollow points, in the desk I'm sitting at. I have a few other hand guns scattered thru the house. But in my opinion the best defence is strong locks and a dog. You can’t sit on the couch petting your pistol.....well you can but that's a different subject all together.

Re: How would you defend yourself in someone broke in?

I don't know what I'd do specifically. Sitting at my computer desk now and looking around for something I could use as a weapon. The only thing I see is a pen. But I would fight to the death to defend myself and I would fight as dirty as possible. If I had a gun, I would shoot to kill any intruder in my house.

A few months ago my parents went out to dinner one night around 7:00 pm. They were gone less than an hour and a half. During that time someone broke in and stole most of their electronics. I was planning to stop by and visit with them and I arrived about 10 minutes after they got home. They were quite upset. I had planned to be there earlier and I wonder if I had been there would the thieves have come in. We know it was at least 2 people. One person couldn't have managed their big screen.

If I had been there and could have gotten to my Dad's guns I would have or if not, I would have tried to get a knife from the kitchen. I wouldn't have tried to just wound them. I would have tried to kill them. I hate thieves!

If offering a drink and small talk didn't defuse the situation then, two shots to the chest, one to the head.

    Well in order of use....

Mo my Coonhound, Maddy my Lab combine for 180 pounds of gnashing teeth

I surf from my kitchen desk so the magnetic knife rack would be easiest... I have an assortment of santuka 7 and 9 inch blades that are sharp enough to do the job....

I live in a one bedroom with the major room divider being a center kitchen island, so i would go the opposite way that they come around the island and head for my bed room... there I have an MP40 conceal carry that is oiled and while not loaded that doesnt matter for me... mere milliseconds from locked and loaded...

But typically the sound of two full sized dogs making 'dont fuck with me' noises generally sends anyone away from my door....

So while they are the love of my life, sometimes meeting guys is a bit difficult if they are dog shy.

I keep an air horn...hopefully the loud unexpected sound would give me enough time to move to safety. Not perfect, but I don't want to own a gun. Although, I could...I live in South Carolina after all.

If I ever see an old baseball bat at a thrift store I have to remember to buy it, Otherwise I just have an old box cutter under my bed, I use it when I need to open those clam shell plastic wrappings, but in an emergency it's a weapon.

Re: How would you defend yourself in someone broke in?

    It has happened to me...

Well -- not the EXACT same scenario...

But -- MANY years ago -- a guy jumped into my car as I was leaving the gas station on my way home from work -- and pointed a gun at me and made me drive home...

The weapon I used was my MIND...

He robbed my home and me -- then left with my car...

Its kind of a long story -- but what kept me alive was KNOWING that I could NOT make a verbal or physical MIS-STEP -- and I promised him to get him MORE money the following day...

At one point -- I was going through my closet finding valuables for him (with him behind me holding his gun) -- and I SO WISHED that I had a gun stored away -- I WOULD HAVE ATTEMPTED to USE IT!!!

And it MIGHT not have turned out so well...

OBVIOUSLY -- I called the cops as SOON as he left -- then my brother to pick my up, since I ABSOLUTELY wasn't going to STAY there...

The cops caught him within the week at a pay by the week/live here motel place just down the street from the gas station he jumped into my car at -- and since he was wanted for MURDER in Chicago -- they extradited him...

My apartment complex moved me to another of their complexes on the other side of town so that I could feel SAFE where I lived...

    So -- yeah...

I would defend myself with my mind...

"Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it..." Goethe

Re: How would you defend yourself in someone broke in?

Simple.... I would grab the pistol hidden within easy reach and put 5 rounds through his skull before he knows what hit him. Two directly in the eyes (one for each), two at the bottom of the nose (simulating nostrils), and the last one in the forehead about a quarter inch up from the bridge of the nose. If he somehow got to close, I would just snap his neck before he could draw a breath.

I have a Machete strapped to the side of my bed (since I'm usually in bed on my laptop) in case of a zombie outbreak, but it'll work great for any intruder. If I'm not able to reach it in time, my 100 lb dog will surely lunge at him. He's always in bed with me.

Fropm where I am at the moment:

    1. Click on the desktop icon with the sound of a racking shotgun.

    2. While he;s momentarily distracted, throw my lemonade in his face.

    3. While he's wiping at his eyes, rip the shade from the table lamp and break the bulb across any bare skin in reach. Ram it in hard.

    4. Roll back and grab my ice axe from the wall, and use the sharp end to puncture his body anywhere convenient -- tyr to pin him to the floor.

    5. Scoot under the bed and get my .22 magnum 8-shot revolver, which has the advantage of resembling an old .48. If he isn't willing to enter into peace talks, apply two rounds to persuade him.

    6. Either he surrenders or is rendered harmless; either way call 911 and get the appropriate assistance.

Alternate: if there were anyone else in the house who I'm also defending, skip asking for peace talks; just render him no longer a threat.

Then tell my mom she's going to need a new carpet after all.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "
