So is letter writing a dead art?

Obviously I have got my knickers in a twist over the thread about "cursive" writing but remember I spent 10yrs teaching children to write beautifully and hope it benefited them in their adult life.

So am I to assume that the art of letter writing has gone the way of joined-up writing?

Has today's technology replaced the need to put pen to paper in order to communicate with one's loved ones?

Writing was a always a pleasure for me. The beautifully written page on quality paper matching, hopefully, the carefully chosen words written to bring pleasure to the reader.

I suppose some of you have never written a letter in your life.

If you did would it be a hastily printed scrawl on any piece of paper torn from a note pad?

Sorry about the no gifs. I need words not pictures at the moment to calm this raging spirit.

I write letters to a friend in prison all the time.

So the answer to your baroque question is, no, the art of letter writing is not dead.

Yes, unless you think barely able to breathe means not breathing at all.

Re: So is letter writing a dead art?

Back in the days when Queen Victoria sat on the throne I wrote beautifully crafted letters to family and friends.

In more recent times I have shifted to emails and SMS generated messages that speak more to brevity than substance.

The invention of the telephone has also enabled me to improve my communication skills ensuring that my spoken voice is never lost on friends and family when arguing over the most trivial of matters.

I readily confess to happily embracing communication skills that have rendered my letter writing skills redundant.

I am ready to bequeath you my quill pen and ink well. Always a pleasure.

I write to a few people in prison...via e-mail. So I guess letter-writing is dead in my world.

In a keyboard and font world I still find a hand-written missive to be more intimate and meaningful.

Neither as quick nor as efficient as the typeset, it is richer and more satisfying. Often seeming like

Re: "So is letter writing a dead art"

    Dear Sir,

................As you may be aware at this stage, my letter-writing capabilities consist mainly of a crude and no doubt misplaced variation of a standard form letter that will, I'm sure, find you with many inconsistencies and inaccuracies regarding its layout, and possibly to a limited extent punctuation, despite my best efforts in this matter.

I attribute this mostly to my penchance for parody and self-deprecation, combined with manifest boredom and a tendency to have too much time on one's hands. Furthermore, I would refer you to my post history for frequent evidence, if needed, as to the validity of this fact.

Nevertheless, I hope you will find my baseless attempts at humour to be amusing to some small degree, and that it will find you in the spirit to which it is intended.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to respond, and, as always, I look forward to hearing your reply.

    Yours faithfully,

    ChickenGuy

I've not written to my old school chum for 11 years. Way back, an evening with the pen and pad would end up with a seven page stream of thoughts and enquiries, memories and things planned. I have a couple of rucksacks of correspondence stretching back twenty odd years... Now JUB's taken over, so this is why letter writing is on the decline. Too much on-line hoo-ha!

I still write letters now and then but rarely. Used to write a lot more back in HS though.

    Are you a drooler?

Just unplug your laptop first, and maybe take the battery out, too, to be extra safe.

I have three printers on my home network, and plenty more available to me elsewhere.

I have several manufactured/downloaded 'handwriting' fonts installed, and I even have software that can convert anyone's handwriting to fonts.

And, if you do decide to print out your special e-mail, you can set any attachments/pics to print on the same page, or use them as 'stationary' background.

Kahaih I understand what you are explaining but to me it all seems so mechanical and lacking in emotion.

It just doesn't seem as special as receiving a letter through the post. Though I am beginning to think the post won't exist soon with all communication being through e-mails.

nobody writes letter really. they are slow. and even if they do, they probably type them and print them, not handwrite. there is no function to writing other than quickly to scribble down some notes - and those are for function not aesthetics.
you want to sleep with an email? ctrl + P

the post will exist. i use it all the time. to send packages. letters though... no. nobody i know writes letters. and only a handful of older people will send birthday cards and postcard and such every now and then.

Do people of the modern age still think it's romantic to write love letters?
I personally think it's sweet if your beloved write you a letter (not necessary for long-distance relationships).
They even make broke up letters seems stylish (Breaking up over phone or Text is CHEAP! LOL). One of my classmate showed me his broke up letter (str8), I'd say her ex sure decorated it a lot.

I think letters are romantic and a nice thing to do also. In my old job I'd leave letters for my clients, for when they returned to their computer, after I'd fix it.. usually just saying what the problem was, that it is fixed and my number, in case they needed me again. My aunt sends me postcards every now and then, just to show she's thinking of me, I keep them my bulletin board. Not sure I'd like a breakup letter though! I wouldn't want to read another letter in a while.

Kallipolis has with great eloquence nearly convinced me that my nostalgia for the art of letter writing is really something I should accept for what it is, a yearning for past pleasures. Something replaced by the need for and the availability of instant communication.

I think I am going to shed a few tears and e-mail a friend.

I may have a bit more to say here, but for nostalgia's sake, I'm giving it the usual three or four days it takes for the post to get back to you.

Seems kind of rude by today's standards, though. . .

I don't write letters, but I will write notes on birthday cards or romantic cards I send to my boyfriend.
