Seattle is a beautiful city. Love the Queen Anne Hill area with it's massive Victorian homes. I have relatives on Vashon Island and took the ferry.

I love Seattle for the limited times I have been there. It has very vibrant social scenes and people seem to really enjoy living in the city. I am surprised San Diego and Austin didnt make the list... I have been to so many large cities in the US and they seem to have a lot of everything in both cities.

Like Seattle--but if I were to leave NYC it would be in pursuit of sunny weather---maybe I'm wrong here but the weather there is --damp and grey many months of the year---my least favorite weather.

It is rainier than other places but has excellent days far more often than people let on. The locals juts tell you "shhhhh - that's what we tell folks to keep them away"

I am with you however, the next place I move to of my own accord will have a lot of sun and balmy seventy degree temps....

Never been to Seattle - was supposed to go many years ago - family member got sick - they're ok now

frankly not much desire to go - so far from NYC

    Portland I'd like to try

I don't put much stock in lists like this frankly although I think they got Detroit right

    People have different likes/dislikes

Personally I LOVE San Diego but couldn't see myself living there now - love to visit however

I LOVE NYC and could see myself staying here forever - but perhaps not - economics are critical

Cities that I find enjoyable (some surprisingly so)
    Pittsburgh
    Cincinnati
    Columbus

Those I find not so nice
    Cleveland
    Orlando
    Miami
    Philly

It’s also more Rainier than other places. I spent the better part of a couple summers in and around Seattle some years back and count it among my most favorite cities. Though I should probably confess that the surrounding terrain holds much of the allure, for me.

i used to say with a str8 face "i love all four seasons" and in fact i do - something about each

and i wouldn't want it sunny every day

usually i would say this to those who live in places like LA and Florida

    defense mechanism i suspect

as much as I LOVE nyc

nice weather to ride my bike, play tennis, wear a t-shirt would be nice

i recall being in san diego last december, in a sports bar on a sunday watching football

when a father walked in with two boys - they were dressed up in their little league uniforms - 12/13/14 year olds

they were playing baseball in december - i thought ........ not bad

I love the outdoors and the attitude of the area and it is on my short list of travel to and stay areas. For a bit that is... please read on....

I am looking realistically. If I buy again it will be for the final destination (as ominous as that sounds). Everyone ages and when we get old cold weather sucks. No check that. It hurts.

So i will own a home in a dry climate that doesn't mean 125 degree temps in the summer... that is the hope, although heat i can manage rather well after acclimated. So Austin is very squarely in my sites now... but they needs to get to legalizing pot in Texas.

Plus it is all about the eye candy. I have lived in very warm year round areas and the people are more fit. I suppose because tank tops or shirtless most of the year, leads you to wanna look the part.

However, the grand scheme, should i pull it off, is to travel and have North America as my doorstep. Still i will need a home. As much as I can live on a ship in small areas, I am sure a Airstream will get to the point where I will want a break or when I want to do maintenance. SO a warm and nice place to call home and a rolling adventure for most of the time.

    I picture something like this:

The sexy blonde ski dude could be using my voice and accent. I love the Eddie Bauer First Ascent and my trailer will be winterized for ski camping but I wont have bunk beds O_O ... just a big love mat... *cough*

Actually if you wanna take a long look... this is the perfect setup imho...

and the perfect music for that matter

    ^ Sounds like a plan!

    I like that.

    Mi casa es su casa.

Bring that bad ass Airstream down to the farm here in Central Texas (complete with hook ups...for the Airstream and otherwise ), and you've got "Base camp Texas."

    ~

I agree that I'm surprised that Austin, Texas didn't make the list here.

I've lived in Boston, I've lived in NYC, I lived in San Francisco.

I HAVE spent a bit of time in Seattle, usually spending a few days on my way to Alaska.

Most of the times that I was there it was cold and wet.

But the one time that I spent there when the sun was out was GLORIOUS!

I found that I like Portland, OR much better; smaller more of a cooler, more hip version of Austin, Texas.

I suspect that I will breath my last breath here in Texas.

It's home, it's where my roots and family are.

But it doesn't mean that I don't want to get back to the North West and see more of it.

But right now if there's any other city in this country I'd consider moving to it would be Austin in a heart beat.

That is a deal. Between the navy, jub, and family, I have two full wet camping sites and mutliple dry camping (wet is with hookups and dry is without)

I have considered renovating my current house in Cincinnati but it would require so much work and is in a subdivision.... bleh.

SO I am going to build new. Still haven't decided where though. I see a smaller interior with a master suite, office and guest room and a kitchen that is loaded out (almost commercially) and a wet room attached to whatever is the outdoors. I like to hike and get muddy and so do the dogs. So i need a modern mudroom with angled floor to a trapped drainage, tile, a spray down / wash tub for furheads.... it will also have to have a massive deck or patio.... dreams... someday...

yet if it is to have all that indoor/outdoor living space then i need to live on a lot of property or against a national park to enjoy...

Imagine showering to the sun rising...

I have digressed from best city to best place in my mind to live... lol

Has anyone who commented here ever driven in Seattle? Horrible traffic -- that alone should keep it from being considered. Cold and wet is not my idea of a fun city.

I've lived in Portland -- it's a black and white city -- no gray -- either people want to cut every tree they see or tie themselves to a tree to keep anyone from cutting it down. Visitors always enjoyed seeing all the kooky demonstrators downtown. The state of Oregon is beautiful -- I hated to leave.

Since the advent of the cell phone, polls that use land-lines to gather information should be suspect.

My personal experience with long, long phone polling is that I get aggravated after 3 minutes and hang up.

BTW -- the poll is from April 2012 -- have you been in a time warp?

Chance1, both Seattle and Portland are about the same distance from New York. The two cities are about 150 miles apart on the Interstate 5 corridor.

I agree Jack, the traffic here is terrible. Our highway system is about 15 years behind where it should be. The new lanes they are adding now needed to be added in 1995.

Yes, there are nice days in Seattle, but they are outnumbered by cold and rainy grey days. Winter here can last, some years, from January to June. We can have weeks of freezing temperatures, or snow and ice storms.

It is a gorgeous landscape, but everything you all have said about it is true. This is not a place for someone with arthritis, I can tell you, first hand. I am looking at warmer climates myself. Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, or New Mexico.

Re: Seattle named Americas most liked city as the Northwest dominates national polls

The slow, drizzly rain we had here in KC after our historic May snow was reminiscent of Portland and Seattle ... slow .... drip.... drip .... drip, drip .... drip... drip for 2 days. I'm not fond of it but I know some love it.

There's just something wrong with having to mow your grass in the rain.

I like warm. If I ever get the chance to retire -- it will be in a warmer climate.

I liked the idea of JH's bath and mud room. Everything would have to be very low maintenance outside -- concrete walls, roof, commercial high rise style windows, doors ... island breeze. *sigh*

It's hotter than a "mofo" in Summer, but that's why we have Air-Conditioning.

It was 82+ degrees today in Seattle, Washington & I'm told that more rain (measurement wise) falls annually in Miami, Florida than falls in the Seattle, Washington area.

I hear Austin, Texas is quite a party town.

I spent a few days in San Diego, California over this past Christmas Season & really enjoyed myself sitting in outdoor saunas and such--very nice city San Diego is.

As a Bostonian aka Masshole, I do enjoy the fact that I get four distinct seasons which is an oddity considering the global climate. We also have quite the landscape from ski mountains, to a swimable ocean, to lovely forests and lakes. This prolonged winter [high 30s last night pissed a lot of people off] has done a number over on us and we will have a shortened Spring which is my favorite season but that just means, unless we have a massive heatwave, the ocean water will remain cold throughout the summer and not beach going weather.

I think there are a lot of "visiting" cities on here. I think the best first-hand experience city I can attest to is Las Vegas. It is fun for a week or a weekend but to live there is quite depressing due to the income parity. Even my transplant friend in Tampa longs for the MA beaches in the summer. At least here you can actually cool off: down there, it is "bath water".

I understand the top two...both Seattle and Portland are fabulous cities....My #1 and 2 would be Santa Cruz and Monterey California followed by San Francisco...then maybe Portland and Seattle.

^ Something tells me that they considered Santa Cruz and Monterey (two of my favorite California cities!!) to be "too small" for their survey. They probably only included 40 or 50 cities on their list - the huge cities. I would put Portland at my #1, and Ann Arbor (perhaps also "too small" for their survey) at #2. Seattle would be toward the top for me, as well, if not for the awful traffic.

I enjoyed visiting Seattle. Great city and atmosphere. If it wasn't on the other side of the country we'd think about moving there.
