    Israel Bombs Syria

For anyone who might have been wondering what a red line response might look like....this could be one aspect of the strategy to limit Assad's ability to unleash chemical weapons in the region.

A spokesman for the Israeli Embassy in Washington declined on Friday night to comment on the Israeli attack, which was first reported by CNN, saying only in a statement, “Israel is determined to prevent the transfer of chemical weapons or other game-changing weaponry by the Syrian regime to terrorists, specially to Hezbollah in Lebanon.”
    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/05/wo...yria.html?_r=0

Obviously, it makes considerable sense to have Israel demolish the delivery systems capability since they have conducted strikes previously on the pretext of weapons being delivered to Hezbollah.

Avi Issacharoff, an Israeli defense analyst, wrote on the news site Walla.com that it was no surprise that Syria and Hezbollah did not acknowledge the strike.

“Any admission by either Syria or Hezbollah that the Israeli Air Force had attacked a weapons convoy, which would obligate them to retaliate, would only serve to paint them into a corner,” Mr. Issacharoff wrote. “The Syrian Army currently lacks the manpower to face Israel on the ground — and certainly not in the air. A conflagration with the IDF is liable to result in the loss of the only advantage that Assad has over the opposition forces — the Syrian Air Force.”

Don't we really need more information before we can actually say that Israel bombed Syria. We can't rush to conclusions. We'll have to study this matter further.

We share every bit of intelligence and in almost every decision. Troops are being sent to Jordan as well. Spec Ops guys.

Agree---they were bombing weapons that were moving thru Syria to make their way to Israel's enemies. Sorta pre-emptive.

The question is though whether the targets was indeed weaponry on its way to Hezbollah or was it simply the West trimming Assad's military of weaponry that could be used in the civil war....including delivery systems for chemicals.

A lot of right wing bobbleheads were yapping all week about Obama's red line. Smart thinking is that Israel has just done the necessary work to take care of the chemical threat with the support of NATO.

We don't know that Israel actually did anything. We have to study it further. Ponder it. Think about it. Study it. No rash decisions.

another round of "why let the facts get in the way of a good story" - yeesh

jon stewart qualifies as a "RIGHT WING BOBBLEHEAD"?

    Here's a sampling

“We don’t know how they were used, when they were used, who used them,” Obama said Tuesday in a press conference, walking back his threatening stance.

This line so tickled Stewart, he went Seussical.

“Did he use them in a boat? Did he use them with a goat? Did he use them in a house? Did he use them with a mouse?” (From Obama’s new book, “Red Lines and Gas,” if you’re interested.)

confirmed by israel that they ........ did it

An Israeli airstrike against Syria was targeting a shipment of advanced missiles believed to be bound for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, Israeli officials confirmed Saturday.
Bibi explained why ...... he had his "red line"

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly warned in recent weeks that Israel would be prepared to take military action if chemical weapons or other arms that would upset the balance of power with Hezbollah were to reach the Islamic militant group.

Israel, for its part, has repeatedly cautioned that it will not allow Hezbollah to receive “game changing” weapons that could threaten the Israeli heartland after a post-Assad government took power.

As well they shouldn't as the US should take the same stance in support of and stand by their allies (allies are people, groups, or nations that have joined in an association for mutual benefit or to achieve some common purpose).

So besides arming the rebels that include Al Quaida elements that would rather kill your newborn than look at you.... which we are now doing... and arming terrorists was why we did not....

What pray tell would you have Obama do? Ground war? Air Raids? What shall we do?

It is absolutely a requirement that the strongest warring nation on earth warn a cruel regime of doing atrocities to their own people. It is, however, unclear what action to take after.

I do understand two things quite clearly. John McCain had he become President would be on the ground in Syria and potentially Iran. Mitt Romney would likewise be involved in SYria but would be less likely to be involved in Iran because of the diplomatic efforts of the Obama administrations turning a good portion of the world against Iran.

I would still love to hear the clear eyed decisions to be made that such men of character who can sit in their arm chairs, do nothing, and fucking whine about Obama dream about....

    Re: Israel Bombs Syria

NEVER in the history of my life would I have expected myself to be tacitly supporting an Israeli bombing campaign....

....and yet, I find myself admitting that maybe Israel could step this up and knock out Assad's heavy weaponry and air support and artillery etc....

....BUT I suspect this is never Israel's intention and they're only concerned about proliferation and supply of general weapons out of Syria.

A bit of a shame really. Since Israel has good form in unilaterally carpet-bombing innocent civilians and causing the deaths of thousands in retalliation for, I don't know, say, a few stray rockets landing in their well-manicured gardens, or a wayward missing soldier, and then having America clap them on the back and applaud them, then I'd have thought the usual pro-Zionists around here would jump at the chance of a uniquely innovative way of circumnavigating the Syrian impasse.

    Oh well.

    Oh well.
Israel IS concerned about the supply of general weapons out of Syria because should they get into Hezbollah's hands, the result would likely not be pretty.

As you know, Hezbollah doesn't have the best track record in regards to restraint..... I seem to actually remembering them KIDNAPPING and killing soldiers (unlike your ridiculous 'missing' claim) and sending missiles into Northern Israel.

(Do you honestly know the difference between the governments of Hamas and Hezbollah? They are supporters of each other but very different with different weapon capabilities. Read a history book or other news stations than Al Jazeera for once).

it appears to be just the beginning .....

Israel rushed to beef up its rocket defenses on its northern border Sunday to shield against possible retaliation after carrying out two airstrikes in Syria over 48 hours – an unprecedented escalation of Israeli involvement in the Syrian civil war.
Israeli defense officials believe Assad has little desire to open a new front with Israel when he is preoccupied with the survival of his regime. More than 70,000 people have been killed since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011, and Israeli officials believe it is only a matter of time before Assad is toppled.
    more to come i'm sure

The Weekly Standard's take on Pres. Obama's stance .....

    first the admin's statement ....

    Massacre in al-Bayda
    Press Statement
    Jen Psaki
    Spokesperson, Office of the Spokesperson
    Washington, DC
    May 4, 2013

The United States is appalled by horrific reports that more than 100 people were killed May 2 in gruesome attacks on the coastal town of al-Bayda, Syria. Regime and Shabiha forces reportedly destroyed the area with mortar fire then stormed the town and executed entire families, including women and children. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of this tragedy.

We strongly condemn atrocities against the civilian population and reinforce our solidarity with the Syrian people. As the Assad regime’s violence against innocent civilians escalates, we will not lose sight of the men, women, and children whose lives are being so brutally cut short.

We call on all responsible actors in Syria to speak out against the perpetration of unlawful killings against any group, regardless of faith or ethnicity. Those responsible for serious violations of international humanitarian law and serious violations and abuses of human rights law must be held accountable.
    now the weekly standard's take

If the government of the United States is unwilling to do anything but present to the world the sorry spectacle of justice without a sword or justice unwilling to use the sword, surely it would be better to say nothing. If the Obama administration is, as Churchill put it in November 1936, "decided only to be undecided, resolved to be irresolute, adamant for drift, solid for fluidity, all-powerful to be impotent," then it should have the decency to keep silent rather than engage in such pitiable and contemptible posturing.
