Unemployment drops, stock market near record high

Employers added 165,000 jobs in April, exceeding expectations.

Unemployment rate drops to 7.5%, the lowest rate in 4 years.

Jobless claims back to pre-recession levels.

Dow Jones and S&P at or near record highs.

So what's the problem? Republicans. They're doing their bet to stop the economy from improving. Can't let "Obama" have any successes.

Sequester. Austerity. Slashing government jobs. Republicans sabotage everything the President does. But he's still succeeding even without their help.

Unfortunately the Obamahaters will dump on any good news that we hear during this President's term in office. It's expected. Who knows what it will take for them to say things are getting better, they won't, so they deserve to be ignored.

Fact: the economy is improving. The only bad thing is the income gap..... it's the gilded age again for the richest Americans. They have so much money they don't know what to do with it so they hide it in overseas accounts. The Obamaeconomy is great for them too.

I already dismiss Huff po as a "liberal rag" anyways.

Yeah, this is just more of the same in economic news. We know Cowboybob is not privy to economics. More people dropping out of the unemployment statistic [U3] while U6 continues to grow ever so higher is a sign of a stagnant economy.

Much of the jobs gain were driven in fields that are economic dead ends...retail, restaurant,services.... the bells aren't quite ringing yet in unbridled jubilation of a new era of wonderful times and prosperity for all. Always better to have jobs than not, and I'm glad for those who found work. But the fundamentals for this economy are nowhere near headed towards unbridled prosperity.

I caught a TED talk last night that described the unemployment situation as an inevitable part of a fundamental restructuring of our society due to computers, especially to ever-faster, ever-smarter computers. Not sure I'll have time to track it down today (doesn't show in my history; I was using another computer), though. But it's worth considering that we're undergoing a "phase change" in economic matters, something no traditional means or tools can address.

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

    ditto

    Another thread.

BTW, the U6 unemployment rate reversed it's downward trend and went up in April.

So the "liberal rag" Huffington post is wrong about the following?....:

Employers added 165,000 jobs in April, exceeding expectations. Unemployment rate drops to 7.5%, the lowest rate in 4 years. Jobless claims back to pre-recession levels. Dow Jones and S&P at or near record highs.

Or are those facts available at more appropriate conservative sites?

The "ongoing disaster" comment is an opinion piece. If you don't know the difference between news and opinion I'll be happy to explain it to you. What else does the Huff Po link say?

^again, look at the U6 rate. This is intro to macro stuff here. If both U3 and U6 go down, I would say the economic outlook is positive but it isn't. They basically swapped percentages.

Again, keep thinking that this economy is doing oh so well when in reality, it's hanging by a thread. Just wait till the college loan bubble bursts and that debt is not cleared via bankruptcy either. You hold those loans for as long as you live.

1,000 new jobs not 2,000. 1,000 new jobs is great news but 1,000 is not 2,000.

About half the 2,000 workers will be new hires. The other half will be workers who were laid off temporarily in the second quarter of 2012 when Ford moved production of the Escape crossover from Kansas City to Louisville. They had been awaiting the start of Transit production.

You're misreading me -- 1,000 jobs is great. Bob was saying that there were 2,000 new jobs. He was not accurate.

this is the article that linked off the Huff Po home page - entitled Jobs Report Positive, But Not Good Enough

"This is a classic 'hold-steady' report -- enough job growth to keep the unemployment rate stable but not much more," EPI's Heidi Sheirholz said in a statement. "In good times, this would be fine, but at a time like this, it represents an ongoing disaster."
not something i would link to when doing the "the economy is doing great" schtick

I can see the failure of the American education system when I read one of your posts Springer. No way the Ford plant will hire you no matter how hard you suck their cock.

I was quoting the headline that Ford was ADDING 2,000 jobs. Where did I say 2,000 NEW jobs?

Jesus Christ, you really have a problem with reading comprehension.

  17. #17

Re: Unemployment drops, stock market near record high

... so what you're saying is that reading the headline is more important than reading the article?

Why not just ignore what I said or admit you were wrong. You didn't just copy and paste -- you expounded on the 2,000. Geesh man this is really a no-brainer.

Ford did indeed add 2,000 jobs. Bob didn't claim they were "new", he just said what Ford did. The fact is that Ford will have 2,000 more jobs going than before; that half of them are to be filled by people who've been waiting for their jobs to return makes no difference -- it's still 2,000 more paychecks than before.

Bob says enough silly things that you don't have to pounce when he's right.

2000 people with paychecks this month that weren't getting 'em last month is certainly 2000 jobs added, in my book.

I was reading an article today (I can't remember what it was about) on Foxnews.com and wondered how it would read somewhere else so I googled the particulars and saw it was also at Huffpost and it was the exact same article word for word.

Don't know if either were the originators or they just carried the story.

    On topic...

The unemployment rate does not count those that have stopped looking for job and "dropped out"

Other than Jack whining that Ford lied, and lying about what Bob said, what amazes me about this thread is that no one has commented on the fact that Ford is going to be making more inefficient, fuel-wasteful trucks instead of something modern.

The BLS report is welcome news, but job quality is a major issue.

The private sector added 176,000 new jobs in April. All of those came in the service sector, with retail trade, business services, and health-care services showing the strongest gains. Goods-producing industries lost 9,000 jobs for the month, partly offsetting gains reported for March. The government sector lost 11,000 jobs in the month, continuing a long trend. Of those, the federal government shed 8,000 jobs in March, with the remainder divided about equally between state and local government.

The only thing fake and dishonest is you pretending Bob said something he didn't.

    Let me make this easy:

I love cupcakes (classic old school cupcakes by the way not these new fancy mile high so sweet you want to vomit cupcakes but that's neither here nor there)

I have one cupcake and I drop it on the ground.
I have no cupcakes and I'm sad.

    I get TWO cupcakes.
I know have twice as many cupcakes as I had before I dropped the old one.
How many delicious cupcakes do I now have to eat?

How many did I have to eat when I only had one?
How many did I have to eat when I had none?

You're telling me I only really have one cupcake?

Still wet here -- can't do anything outside -- so guess what -- I'm making a pie!! Rhubarb custard -- my mother used to make those this time of year. I hope my dad will appreciate it and that it will be edible.

    Easy.

Ford has a pie on the shelf.
It is getting a new pie as well.

Both pies will now be put on the table. Thus, FOred is adding two pies to the table.
