Hershey's chocolate - does is taste disgusting to you?

So yesterday I went into a local sweets/candy shop (remember, this is in Melbourne, Australia), and decided to treat myself to some American chocolate: a Hershey's bar, some Reece's, a packet of Milk Duds and a few others. Anyway, the Hershey's was beyond awful: the nearest equivalent I can manage is the sour taste you get in your mouth after you've thrown up. Yep, Hershey's tasted like vomit. It also had overtones of plastic.

I'm not the only one who has had this reaction. I wonder, though, is my reaction a typical un-American one? To those of you brought up to Hersheys is its flavour delightful?

I am second to nobody in my passionate love for Reece's peanut butter cups and bars, but Hersheys... that can stay on the other side of the Pacific.

I like the taste of Hersheys I have a large bar with almonds in the fridge, I guess maybe you have to be brought up with that taste to like it.

Hershey's chocolate by itself isn't good. If there are almonds or other types of nuts or bits mixed in it becomes more tolerable. But otherwise I'll leave it on the store shelf.

Given the choice, I prefer a nice dark chocolate.

You probably don't like it because you aren't American. I think I remember BENDERBOY saying he doesn't like Hershey's either.

I do like Hershey's, but my favorite chocolate is Reisen chocolate, which is German.

A little while back I treated myself to some British chocolate and bought a Galaxy Ripple bar.

I took a bite and couldn't decide if I liked it or not. Then I went to sleep and woke up in the middle of the night and devored the rest of the bar, it was like an orgasm. Wish I had one right now, tbaft.

I'm from the UK, and tried Hershey's once. It was so completely unlike chocolate as Europeans know it that I just couldn't consider it the same thing at all. And I didn't like it one bit.

It's not even allowed to be called chocolate by the FDA anymore. Hershey's started replacing all the cocoa butter in most of their products with polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR) and vegetable oils to cut costs. I think the only one that still has cocoa butter in it is their Special Dark bar. It's the reason for the waxy texture and off taste.

I don't know if it was Hershey's but I once tried some American chocolate; it was utterly vile.
A lot of British chocolate is bad enough - sickly sweet and bland - but the American stuff was even worse.

Hershey's isn't always bad, but I don't prefer milk chocolate anyway.

I love Lindor Truffles, by Lindt.

There have been times when a Hershey's kiss was either waxy or slightly putrid as you have said, but overall, their quality is good.

Once, they had such a hegemony on the market here, that their executive STRONGLY opposed advertising here until they were finally forced to in the 70's by MM Mars.

Re: Hershey's chocolate - does is taste disgusting to you?

I have a friend in Scotland who has never tried a Hershey bar so I send him a couple. He said it reminded him of bakers chocolate as it wasn't as sweet as the bars he gets at home. He's right... I've had Cadbury, Nestles, Mars, etc and they're quite a bit sweeter than Hershey. It's more for the American palate I guess.

There's lots of different Hershey bars... with almonds, peanuts, crisped rice, special dark.

Once in a while I like to get a Toblerone as a treat.

Hershey used to make passable milk chocolate. I used to love their Kisses. However, the formula seems to have changed. I bought a package of Hershey Kisses for a Christmas treat last year and they left me with a horrible 'chemical' aftertaste. I'll never buy their 'chocolate' again.

Americans can make very good chocolate. Ghirardelli comes to mind as being of top quality. But you won't find it in a convenience store. Incidentally Americans tend to call them "candy bars," while we call them "chocolate bars" in Canada. I think that's an indication of where our relative priorities rest: we do chocolate as well as it is done anywhere. Cococo or Papa Chocolat for example.

But for something just off the shelf at the corner store, I love Coffee Crisp, which sadly I haven't seen outside the country.
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

Hershey's in particular does have a sort-of sour/buttermilk taste to it, I find. Reese's, on the other hand, is chock-full of win. The other American chocolate I had on my tour was ok, relative to the Nestle/Cadbury's/Bacon fare which are our local standards.

I recently had a Swiss guy tell me Lindt chocolate was mass-produced crap; we Saffers use it as our go-to when we need to impress people. Apparently it does not impress the Swiss.

I like Coffee Crisp too and whenever I'm in Winnipeg I buy several bars. Unfortunately I don't think it's sold in the States but you can buy it off the internet. Also get boxes of Macintosh Toffee but that's getting off topic.

Re: Hershey's chocolate - does is taste disgusting to you?

    From the Hershey bar wikipedia:

The Hershey Process milk chocolate used in these bars is cheaper to make than other types of chocolate as it is less sensitive to the freshness of the milk. The process was developed by Milton Hershey and was the first mass-produced chocolate in the United States. As a result, the Hershey flavor is widely recognized in the United States and Canada, but less so internationally, in particular in areas where European chocolates are more widely available. The process is a trade secret, but experts speculate that the milk is partially lipolyzed, producing butyric acid, which stabilizes the milk from further fermentation. This compound gives the product a particular sour, "tangy" taste, to which the US public has become accustomed, to the point that other manufacturers often add butyric acid to their milk chocolates.[1] The American bar's taste profile was not as popular with the Canadian public, leading Hershey to introduce a reformulated Canadian bar in 1983.[2] The company describes the revised Canadian formulation as a "creamier, smoother, lighter coloured and milder flavoured product more suitable to Canadian taste".

It's all about what you were brought up eating. Many Americans find European candy to be too sweet. Even when we get European brands in the US, like Cadbury, their formulas are often changed to cater to American tastes, and vice versa. American candies sold internationally often have different formulas, too.

Reese's however, is sheer perfection and the rest of the world can suck it.

We Americans looked at chocolate the way we looked at beer. We saw something wonderful being made overseas, and thought "I bet we could mass-produce something that's vaguely similar to that, but with more chemicals and no craftsmanship." Pretty much all American food successes are successes of marketing, not flavor.

And Reese's was purchased by Hershey's in 1963. So apparently their marketing successes go beyond our borders, too.

It's a matter of personal taste though I do hear the complaints about how the modern recipe is somewhat different than earlier, and
something is lost in whatever convenience to the manufacturer to change recipes. I till like Hershey's... Ghiradelli is more gourmet and probably is better overall in quality but most American chocolate brands to me are good. I think Kit Kat is from M&M/ Mars and I just love them. Basically as I said it's a matter of personal taste though I'm amused about Lindt....have had bought some at the supermarket I work in and I love it... never heard before the Swiss look down on it.

I tend to avoid milk chocolate in general from Hershey's, but give me a Goodbar (Hershey's with roasted peanuts,) Hershey Dark or with Almonds anyday. I do agree some European milk chocolate is too sweet for my taste and I actually prefer M&M/Mars chocolate and Nestle, though straight chocolate bars from them are hard to find. Which brings up the whole hype about smarties vs. M&M's...Smarties I find entirely too sweet and the natural beet and carrot-derived colorings were off-putting, which I guess jives with Americans liking a slightly bitter bite to our chocolate. I once did a sampler of Canadian Chocolate shipped to my door and the only one I liked was the Coffee Crisp, go figure.

It's all corn syrup and low grade ingredients and tastes like crap these days. Reese's is horrid! They used be great, but the chocolate's bad and the PB is worse as it's too sweet and it's gritty too these days.

You get what you pay for, like most things in life. If you want inexpensive chocolate, you buy Hersheys. If you want quality chocolate and you are willing to pay for it, you buy from handmade chocolate shops and chocolatiers. Just Truffles in St. Paul is a good one.

Hershey's is Sir Ron's chocolate of choice.

I have been to Hershey's Chocolate World and Hersheypark in Hershey, PA, and to the Hershey Canada plant in Smith's Falls, Ontario Canada.
Nestle's claims to make the very best, but Hershey is the Great American Chocolate Bar!

I am a huge fan of Cadbury's and Milka too, though!

Like I said before I like Hershey bars, Reese's peanut butter cups are too sweet to me. Hersheys kisses I don't care for. I even like those chocolate bunnies they have around easter. Some of those can't even call themselves chocolate they have to list that they are chocolate flavored. I missed out on them this year, when I went to buy some on Easter they were all sold out. M&Ms are yummy.

Hershey's wouldn't be my first (or second, or third) choice, but I wouldn't say it's disgusting.

if I was having a major sugar craving and a Hershey bar was all that was available, I wouldn't turn it down.

I'm not really a fan of milk chocolate, and Hershey's is definitely low-quality compared to the brands I usually buy. Special Dark is edible, but I still find it too sweet. I prefer 70%-85% cacao content, and Special Dark is around 60%.

I generally try to buy fair trade chocolate, but I'll also buy Ghirardelli if it's reasonably-priced.

The nice thing about dark chocolate is that a couple squares will satisfy a chocolate craving, whereas milk chocolate rarely leaves me feeling satisfied.
Recently I heard a 'wise guy' story that I had a party at my home for twenty-five men. It's an interesting story, but I don't know twenty-five men I'd want to invite to a party. ~Joan Crawford

Are you talking about Hershey's Kisses? I like those okay...not the best, but passable when there aren't any other chocolates around.

What I like more from Hershey's is their Skor bar:

My favorite chocolates are usually See's Candies..I'm a huge sucker for those. I usually go through periods when I "forget" about them, but once I decide to go purchase one box, I usually spend the next week or so splurging on them. A close second for me would be the Swiss choclate: Toblerone.

It didn't impress me, either. My roommate got some Lindt for Christmas. He tried one piece and offered me a piece as well. We both decided it was highly overrated and not worth the effort to chew it. He tossed out what was left.

    Yes.

I can't speak for whatever premium bars are out there that may have different flavors or taste different, but just their "default chocolate", what you'll get in a bar in any normal store, has a vapor/aftertaste of vomit to me.

This would explain why I find Hershey's harsh and acidic. It literally burns the back of my throat sometimes.

If you live near a Trader Joe's, for $5 you can get a ginormous 17 ounce bar of Belgian dark chocolate (72%) that's really good. It lasts me about a month:

I think that's an indication of where our relative priorities rest: we do chocolate as well as it is done anywhere. Cococo or Papa Chocolat for example.

But for something just off the shelf at the corner store, I love Coffee Crisp, which sadly I haven't seen outside the country.
Of course Americans can make good chocolate. But it is all handmade, with quality ingredients. Not mass produced 'chocolate' coloured food product. But I think that the mass market Cadbury is shit too.

I dunno captain. I can buy Ghirardelli just off the shelf at my grocery store.

As far as chocolate bars, I've found Cadbury to be sort of basically barely adequate, and I've never had a "Hershey Bar."
Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.
