Coming Out Kicking: openly gay kicker trying out for the NFL

Meet Alan Gendreau. He's openly gay. His teammates at Middle Tennessee State had no problems with him, because he was good.

I am very interested to see if he makes it. I hope to God he does.

    P.S.

    He's cute.

Here are my thoughts, girls, gather.

    1. The fact that he is christian will help him as much as it hurts him. The idea of an openly gay NFL player being christian will not mesh well with the Role Model status that the gheighs will be trying to give him. However it will be easily digestible for the progessive side of middle america.

    2. He is actually not that butch which I know many people including I were hoping for regarding the first "openly" key word is "openly" gay player. We have Kerry Rhodes and a few Ex NFL players that are all insanely masculine however no longer in the NFL. Of course Kerry Rhodes is now engaged to a woman but we all know the tea on that.

    3. A kicker is actually one of the best positions for the first openly gay player to be in. He can't be targeted with malicious tackles and he will remain rather protected while doing his job on the field.

At the end of the day I don't believe this is the player the gays want, however it is the gay player we need. This guy could be the one who tips the scale and allows some (Probably not all) players to come out.

    I applaud his bravery.

    He's so freakin' HOTT!!

    He's masculine & plays football.

He sleeps with a Bible under his pillow & he goes to church every week. He's a true Southern gay Christian boi!!

    He's hottttttttttttttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree with what DF said. It's really tough for athletes to come out publicly as it affects their already short-lived sports career.

Maybe this gives Tim Tebow the reason to come out....... no tea no shade, right?

See, the interesting thing about it all is he's not just coming out. He's already out and that's his challenge. I believe the ever-awesome Chris Kluwe said he had a very comparable college career to his teammate (and fellow hottie) Blair Walsh. So, if he proves himself to his team, then all the power to him.
    3. A kicker is actually one of the best positions for the first openly gay player to be in. He can't be targeted with malicious tackles and he will remain rather protected while doing his job on the field.
I think you're right and wrong here. He can't be targeted because he's already protected, but I think that also leaves him vulnerable to vicious attacks that could be played off as "accidents". I hope to God nothing like that happens, but worse homophobic things have happened.

At the end of the day I don't believe this is the player the gays want, however it is the gay player we need. This guy could be the one who tips the scale and allows some (Probably not all) players to come out.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

Now, who will volunteer as the first openly gay QB?

    I would pity his center.

But seriously, it is difficult for any kicker who tries out for the NFL, regardless of sexual orientation. Teams usually regard kickers as an accessory - until one of them wins a game. I wish Mr. Gendreau all the luck in the world, but he has a tough road ahead of him.

That's not entirely true. From the article:
Case in point: The Detroit Lions just signed a new kicker, YouTube sensation Havard Rugland from Norway. His only experience kicking footballs before signing was at Husted’s camp for two months earlier this year.
Kicking in the NFL is about the leg. If he's got it, someone could/should take a chance.

Love everything except... he's a kicker, the least respected position in football. Actually they aren't even considered football players by many people. Even if he is on a team, I don't think it will make much of a difference. They don't really interact with the others like the rest of the positions do.

Why is he not the player the gays want? An openly gay sportsman with the potential to raise the profile for others who feel they need to be closeted in order to a) play and b) play. What is it about him that makes him not the players the gays want?

Re: Coming Out Kicking: openly gay kicker trying out for the NFL

Is Alan Gendreau a good football player? Is this guy good enough to be in the NFL? At the end of the day it isn't about Gendreau being gay it is about whether or not this man is talented enough to be a NFL player.

People do realize this guy is a kicker that's about the least important position on a football team.

I am kind of disappointed at the people at Outsports they are hyping this guy yet he is just a kicker.

I have read some comments on other sports forums and the consensus is that Gendreau is using his sexuality in order to get media attention and ahead.

Is this guy a good football player? Can he kick well?

Ultimately that's the most important thing, I notice a lot of gays talk about his looks and yes Alan is cute. However, in order to get respect in men's sports gay male athletes MUST be talented. Gendreau had a solid college career but is a NFL team even going to give this guy I chance? I've go on ESPN and the other sports boards and according to the comments from the straight guys they say he isn't really that good.

I think only two teams in the NFL are looking for kickers this year. Chris Kluwe seems to think this guy has a shot I hope so.

But I'm not getting my hopes up Alan tried out for the NFL last year and did not make the cut.

I looked around for him today and he is draft eligible (which is tomorrow night), but he's not even in the top 15 for kickers. But, that doesn't mean he won't be signed as a free agent and put on a team. Who knows!

    dayam!

I'd take him (and do him)

Gives me a reason to get drunk with my straight buds tomorrow night (possible he might have a slight chance with Carolina Panthers or NY Jets)

Sad, Kerry Rhodes decided to stay in the closet. On the internet the latest rumour is Kerry Rhodes is getting married to a woman in June. But nobody has seen this lady yet.

Yep, that's what I thought too. But don't tell that to some of the hypocritical queens on the interwebz. I was on the Huffington Post this morning, and the Latte drinking queens couldn't get enough of this story. Yet every time a story featuring Brendon Ayanbadejo was posted, you'd get these snarky cynical posts from fags who never really watched the game of football - claiming he was an attention whore.

Now they're trying to make this butta face the poster child for courage and strenght..

That's becuz there's a double standard in the gay (male) community.

White gay men (& light-skinned Latinos) with athletic bodies & good looks are idolized.

If you're Black, Asian, Indian, dark-skinned Latino or Native American............nobody cares. Unless you have a lot of money.

Rumors are rumors. If thats what he did, cool. The point is, he's gay (And not playing straight to 'fix' his PR shit) and out. He is an NFL-caliber player and I hope it is a calling to other players that it's okay to be gay.

What the fuck are you talking about? The "gay community?" The person I see more than anyone else doing this is you actually. You put yourself down and idolize the same kind of white man over and over so it isn't the gay community...you are projecting your own attitudes on to everyone else.

I don't idolize anyone (well...maybe Chaka Khan ).....it is boring. This guy that you like so much...he could turn me straight. Blech. If there is anyone I think is sexy right now...it is Michael Strahan...and it damn sure isn't because of his money.

I certainly don't idolize this guy...I don't care enough about him to even comment.

I think you got a point, remember, Ellen Degeneres having Chris Kluwe the white NFL player on her show but not Brendon Ayanbadjeo on her program?

Of course, Ellen didn't want the black man who started the whole fight for equality for gay people in the NFL Brendon Ayanbadejo on her program. Ellen Degeneres is no better she simply interested in engendering a white gay image as if white queers are the only ones making a difference for gay rights.

I think Ellen Degeneres is a racist.

And Chris Kluwe also was on the cover of Out Magazine which of course is a white gay male publication.

    Is anyone really surprised?

I think that's one of the problems I have with the white gay community some of them refuse to acknowledge their white skin privilege.

Brendon Ayanbadejo is really putting himself out there a biracial man speaking out for gay rights.

Brendon Ayanbadejo being so outspoken about gay rights. I think it is fantastic to see a young black man in the NFL be so passionate about it. It was Brendon who started this whole NFL gay rights getting into the mainstream.

Yes, but JayQueer seemed to be talking more generally. And I think eastofeden's point was that JayQueer was talking about an imagined gay community that wasn't based in reality.

You nailed it with this post...

As for this kicker, i don't want him to make any NFL team. WHY? because I don't want him to make history as the first openly Gay player in the NFL. I think that distinction should go to a Black Player because it will help to challenge the stereotypes within the Black Community. And it will further the badly needed conversation about homosexuality among Black Masculine Men.

I noticed my previous comment was deleted when I stated I wanted to see a Black Masculine Man as the first NFLer to come out.. Lets see how long this one stays up.
