Delaware Marriage Bill on Fast Track

The Delaware House of Representatives voted today 23-18 to pass marriage equality after the house committee approved it on the 18th. One Republican from Newark sided with 22 of the House's 26 Democrats. The bill now heads to the Senate where Democrats hold a 13-8 majority.

Considering the same partisan margins exist in the House and Senate, the bill should pass. Rhode Island's marriage bill is imminent with the full and final Senate vote tomorrow, so Delaware will likely be the 11th state with marriage equality.

It looks like the last coastal state in the Northeast left without marriage equality will be New Jersey, where its Republican governor and minority members refuse to budge.

Everybody is reading the tea leaves on New Jersey.

Rumors swirl about the override vote, if Christie will ultimately sign, or if the Mercer County lawsuit will ever go to trial. The Senate override vote we can probably do easily. There is a slim chance that we can get the 12 votes in the Assembly, but that will require a lot of Republicans to contradict the governor and embarrass him politically. It will be clearer what our options are after the Supreme Court decisions. For now it's completely on hold, and Christie could be governor for quite a long time...

^^^There's always the referendum option too. Remember too that it will be MONUMENTAL when Section 3 of DOMA is struck down. No longer will the other side be able to say "civil unions are the same". I really think that may be enough to sway enough Republicans. Christie will likely tell his caucus to vote their conscious, if not changing his mind (I honestly wouldn't put it past him). If all else fails, a referendum will be a piece of cake. Support is at 60%+ and it will be a gubernatorial year for the state.

Even if it overrided,Christie has shown he can roll with the punches and duke them out easily. IMO,if conservatives weren't being so stupid with the idea that he helped Obama win relection because he actually put politics aside when his state was underwater, they would see he is their best chance to retake the white house in 2016.

The bill has been referred to the Senate Executive Committee.

There are only six members, and because it's an even number, we will need four of them for a favorable report.

IMO we'll get the four. I don't think they want to be on the wrong side of this in Delaware.

It's moving remarkably quickly. Just a month ago this state was in the back of my mind as a maybe. I think the effect of Maryland's vote, the Supreme Court cases, and the US Senators' support have all made the atmosphere very conducive for Delaware. It has also helped that Delaware native Joe Biden helped snowball all of this support since his clumsy but crucial announcement last year.

It might have been clumsy but I think he knew what he was doing when he said it. In many of the swing states, bragging about keeping gays and lesbians as second class citizens isn't a winning ticket anymore.
More to the point,it did help Obama out come election time.

It could come down to one vote in the Senate.

The reason Hall-Long may vote no is due to a fear of being disowned by her Bapist preacher father. If that's really true then she shouldn't be in politics.

Regardless it's important to remember that inside information knows more then the general public making educated guesses (I can attest to this in Minnesota), and that we've already seen support for marriage equality bills among legislators who previously opposed civil unions.

    Back to topic:

The marriage equality bill narrowly passed the House last week, has now been approved by a Senate committee, and is now on it way to the closely decided full Senate, which is expected to take it up next Tuesday, May 7.

DOVER, Del. — A state Senate committee on Wednesday sent a bill authorizing same-sex marriage in Delaware to the full Senate for a vote next week.
    ....
The bill narrowly won passage in the House last week and supporters and opponents expect another close vote in the Senate when it takes up the measure Tuesday.

My partner and I have a house in Rehoboth Beach and spend 1/2 of each week there. Delaware is an interesting state. Northern Delaware is very progressive and liberal while southern Delaware, especially inland, is conservative.

It's been interesting following this initiative in the local southern Delaware papers versus the northern Delaware papers. Reading both can be like following some of the more "political" threads here; facts seem not to matter...

Oh I know this...I'm just saying that while he left...we always still seem to be stuck with the claque of rabid political and social right wingers instead of interesting contributors like JB, who focussed our attention on many of the key issues for homos in the US today instead of going on an endless 'I hate Obama/immigration/taxes/gun control' rant.

    That isn't "lost"

    That's "left"

Try getting your bullshit in order before u drop untruths on the "fringe" ok ?

Perhaps when he returns he'll be less pompous

    That's my hope
Jeezus Chance. When will you learn to take the time and read. I never implied that the drone of the right wingers here had any cause and effect relationship on jockboy's leaving.

And yes...we've lost him...whether he left 'voluntarily' or not.

And I don't know why you think that he should or would be any less 'pompous' when he returns because it sure hasn't seemed to be the case after your vacations form this board. At least with Matt, even if you don't agree at all with him, one at least had the feeling that you were having an argument with someone of intellectual depth and breadth.

I predict we'll win by one vote. At the very worst it'll be a tie and the Leiutenant Governor will cast the tie breaking vote in favor.
