French Marriage Bill Receives Final Approval

In a 331-225 vote, the Assemblee of France ratified Senate changes to Bill 344 for equal marriage. France will be the 14th country to approve of equal marriage on President Hollande's signature.

With its 65 million people, this makes France the largest in Europe to pass marriage equality, behind only the 100 million in Brazil where it is adopted by 11 states.

The law on the same-sex marriage has just been approved by "Assemblée nationale" : it's a victory!

Congratulations to François Hollande, Jean-Marc Ayrault (my ex-mayor and actually the first minister) and Christiane Taubira ! Thanks for this democratic law !!!

No. But I can't imagine he will want to wait. We're still waiting for the President of Uruguay to sign his country's bill...

The extreme right is very agitated now. I am concerned for the safety of the gay community.

I blame the political process. It takes way too long, and I think the speaker finally realized this. The Assemblee had to cut debate in half and expedite this vote because of the growing violence.

I've never heard of one chamber in any other country getting 135 hours of debate time on this issue. Without the change in rules, it would have been 160 hours, and that doesn't even include the debate in the Senate!

The Constitutional Court will now review the law, but it shouldn't take long at all and no issues should arrise.

In Uruguay, the President announced he would sign it within 10 days after passage.

The Constitutional Court has 1 month to deliberate. The first marriages could begin in mid June.

    "Reverso" internet translation :

My enjoyment is quite limited because the current French right makes me pity! Say that they refer to the Gaullism: I have a good laugh!
Certain elected representatives paraded(scrolled) beside Gilbert Collard (delegated FN), it is to say...
Furthermore, that we do see parading(scrolling) on pavements? Of sad extremists / clerical fanaticized / réacs / fundamentalists / fundamentalists of any edges which chant slanderous comments on the gays of a way enough nauséeuse.
In brief, let us be careful in the fact that the squalid animal does not resurface...

    Not just the US.

But not because of the French or inspiration derived from their vote

Samuel Alito cited thin international precedent for his skepticism at oral arguments. China also expressed skepticism for the same reason in the government's response to Lin Yinhe. So yes there is.

    You're right

I was referring to cultural attachments of which IMHO there are virtually none

Vs the UK - which we are much more closely connected - historically and today

The violent response within France is appalling - with citizens and elected officials showing just how far right French culture is

    My apologies

France seems bigoted and conservative compared to their southern neighbor, Spain. I'm just a bit baffled by all this noise from the right wing. Sure, there were protests in Spain when the gay marriage law passed, but it was never this bad. It just confirms what I've always thought, Spain is more gay friendly than France. Oh, and btw, I've been to Spain, and based on my own experience, I can tell you that most Spaniards don't give a fuck whether someone is gay or not. It's not an issue at all. Gay couples hold hands and kiss on the street, and nobody even blinks twice. It's just normal, and very refreshing to see

There is a radical right in France that is giving the country a bad name. It's a shame because they don't represent France.

Objective inspection finds that France consistently supports marriage equality in the opinion polls.

Yes, I'm agree with this opinion.

The importance of the word of the "religious zealots" is too strongly relieved by the media. The majority of the French are rather gay friendly generally.
But in France we like very much discussing.
The real debate was around the filiation. Furthermore, the Right (laws, justice, constitution) French is not the same that of the nearby countries.
