How do I know it is not alcoholism? or is it?
I think there are several ways to know if it's alcoholism or not.

    1. If you have consequences from your drinking and continue to drink, that might be a sign to get evaluated.

    2. If you can't stop drinking once you start.

    3. If you are preoccupied with drinking.

There are others, but from what you've shared with us, I wouldn't be worried. I'm not a medical professional, but I have my own struggles with alcohol and have asked this question before, so I know some of the differences between regular drinking and unhealthy drinking from research online.

    One martini is too many.

    Two martini's are just fine.

    Three martini's are not enough.

If you are the last you've got a problem.

Honestly, I think it can be. Binge drinking? Bad. Constant drunkenness? Bad. Drinking to get drunk? So-so. A drink with dinner to loosen things up? Nah, that just feels nice.

I started drinking to feel better. Then I needed a drink so I wouldn't feel bad. Which are you?

drinking alone could be a sign. whats the fun in that? if you say you just do it to calm your nerves after a hard day, then you are depending on it. and/or will eventually become dependant on it. try having a hard day and not drinking, and if you can do it, then you have no problem. If you cant, then you may have one.

I wouldn't recommend brownies, unless you know how strong they are. I took one a month ago and it really fucked with me. I'd rather drink any day. Plus, I hate the smell of weed.

I don't drink very much - my father was an alcoholic so perhaps i am extra leery of the possibility

I enjoy drinking with others - alone not so much

a single drink after a hard day I cannot imagine is a problem - it's designed to calm you down ? take off the edge?

anything more than that i have to believe is a problem

you should find a way to relax in lieu of the drink is my advice

i use the gym to work off my work stress

    good luck

I think the fact that you are asking is a red flag.
The fact that you are self medicating with alcohol is also a red flag.

I don't believe the quantity is what makes someone dependent.

Since you seem to be concerned, you might want to step away from it for awhile.

People drink for a variety of reasons. The taste is not generally one of them. They drink to alter their mood or to chill out, relax, etc. Time away from it might help you to better understand why you drink. It could be harmless or it could be a problem for you.

I don't see a problem with that, unless you do it too often. You might want to cut back just a bit, because you don't want to become dependant on it. Plus, it's expensive, and it causes some pretty nasty medical problems.

I drink on a regular basis, but I try to keep it down to once a week. I don't drink to feel better though, it's just something I enjoy doing.

For me drinking is all about lowering my standards so I can get along with other gay men.
In that sense drinking alone is not very useful, though the brain damage is actually a good thing.

Well drinking the wine is beneficial and good for you, for health reasons. If you know and understand why you are drinking it, and using it as an escape and that is your sole escape then you are fine. But if you find yourself grabbing the bottle every time something bad happens, and it stops being one glass and you wind up drinking a whole bottle then maybe you should take a step back and re-evaluate the situation.

I am not much of a drinker, but every now and then I want a glass of something at the end of the day. It could be because I had a good day, or a bad day. I just know I'm not going to let a bottle be my escape.
I may be bad, but I'm perfectly good at it.

Re: Is drinking to feel better always bad?

As an act of mental discipline, I will occasionally declare an alcohol-free period of a few days to a few weeks. I find I am indifferent to the time away from the bottle, except on a few days of greater than normal chaos at work, where my first reaction to my self-imposed abstinence is resentment.

I find that makes the exercise entirely worthwhile: the next morning always feels like an accomplishment.

So, I would say, drinking to feel better is good when you have chosen to do so and it is not otherwise an unreasonable choice. It would be bad in my own experience if I had chosen not to. I have found it useful to test myself on this point and it has left me feeling very much in control.

Re: Is drinking to feel better always bad?

Last night I binged a tiny bit because I was alcohol-free for a week due to my allergies which really took me over.

I don't get why people think having a stiff drink after work is a bad thing. People look down on alcohol with such disdain but tobacco gets a free pass? A paradox to say the least.

I just look at the HR notes to not hire smokers and to fire them at will. Says nothing about drinkers but only people who drink on the job.

I am not admonishing alcohol in the least. The "disease" runs in my family and I have known others with it. If you think peppermint schnapps [Rumple Minz to be precise] is "mouth wash", you need help.

I will add that I have met exactly one functioning "pothead" in my life. She is one of the most brilliant people I have encountered and she smokes weed to deal with her major anxiety problems.

With my generation [Gen Y], that is true. Since all employees after 6 months get "corporate cars" if they desire, we have a no-smokers policy in place that is strictly obliged.

With the way people have been talking about alcohol in this topic, they think it is some evil substance but much of the time, I won't smell alcohol on a person but you bet your virgin ass I will smell your nasty menthol cigs on you in an instant.

It isn't necessarily bad per se, but if you find yourself preoccupied with doing it in lieu of other activities that can also potentially help you feel better...it can be a warning sign. Opportunity versus dependency.

Have some treat in your fridge to come home to instead of the drink. Sometimes feeling tired and crap because of work is because you're not eating properly.

Doesn't sound like you're drinking that much, but the fact that you're questioning whether you're drinking for the wrong reasons sounds like a good enough reason to lay off it a bit and see how you feel.

I am an alcoholic even though I have not had a drink in over 25 years now....close to 30 now....and as an alcoholic I can say that the only person who can decide if you are an alcoholic is you....period. I don't even "go there" with other people as it is none of my business.

but I wouldn't say depressants give you the emotion of sadness any more so than stimulants give you the emotion of happiness.

as someone with anxiety, liquor and weed in light doses both just make me feel level/balanced out (and heavy doses and I'm your typical drunk/stoned guy)
    Is all weed a depressant?

I thought there existed two strains. Multiple varieties of both strains but two strains.

Indica use creates a “couch-lock”, I-don’t-want-to-move-a-muscle type high. Using indica is a great choice for those nights indoors watching TV, playing video games, or just chilling with close companions. The indica high numbs the body down and induces an overall sense of relaxation, which is ideal for a relaxing night’s sleep.

Sativa use produces more of a mental, cereberal high, which often results in a boost in energy and imagination. Sativa strains are perfect when working creatively in activities such as writing, painting, and brainstorming new ideas. Sativas are also a great choice for enhancing the experience at artistic events like movies and concerts.
meh perhaps they are both depressants but different highs... i withdrawal my question....

I drink somedays and some days I dont. I have drank to excess and been in new orleans for a week that I swear the water had booze in it coming out of the shower....

    All things in moderation.

JB you have great advice above. The only other 'good sign' that you may have a problem that I do not see listed is if you change personalities when drinking. If people who know you say stuff like... "man you were wild last night" and you felt like you just had some drinks, then maybe it is time to take a break and see if you have an addiction.

Something odd about alcoholism is it is both an addictive poison and it is a behavior modifier. So you could express symptoms of alcoholism just by the way you were raised or the social context of how you relax.

Anyways i am no expert by any means. But we do training on it regularly to spot it in troops. As you might imagine being in horrible circumstances causes people to turn inward a self medicate.

So maybe the real question you ought to ask is why do you feel a really hard day needs a substance to make better... perhaps you should work on making the days less difficult. Lofty ideas if the situation causing stress is out of your control but you would be surprised how your attitude and simply identifying what causes the bad day can help you recognize it and not let it affect you as much.

Nope. Knew a heavy alcoholic who gave up drinking each lent - about 40 days. Still went back to the bottle with a vengeance afterwards.

Since I started working out after work, my alcohol consumption has dropped from about two drinks per day to two drinks per week.

Do you have any idea of how many aerobic minutes it takes to undo a glass of red wine or a shot of vodka?

Actually, the workout takes up the space that I had been using to 'unwind' and by the time I've finished and showered, it is time for dinner.

No. Pretending to have a degree of couth. I use plastic 32oz tumblers. With an ice cube in red wine O_O ... I would just drink straight from the source but boxes of wine are hard to drink from....

This is it. It's not about quantity or frequency. It's about why someone is "using" alcohol. Dependence often start out innocently and in small quantities for recreation or relaxation. We start out controlling them and before we know it, they control us.

Dependence is a relative thing though. One might say we're all dependent on pleasure. In that regard I'm addicted to sunbeams, back rubs, good meals...piņa coladas....getting caught in the rain...making love at midnight...the taste of champagne, you know, all the usual comforts.

We all need pleasure, and at least neurochemically it is all much the same. The question in my mind is "Is the frequency objectively bad for my liver?" And "Am I forgoing other pleasures," or "am I overlooking other ways to relax?"

I don't think you should worry about looking forward to a glass of good wine or a nice Scotch as a reward at the end of the day. As the others have said, worry if it looks like you can't do without it or you end up having 3 or 4 instead of one - but I doubt it'll ever get that serious, though.
