I find it weird that people are unaware of what is around them as well but as has been pointed out some folks have no choice.

I also find it odd that the volunteer fire fighters would not know Ammonia Nitrate can explode violently and that the fire captain was unaware as well. Those folks died but I imagine their thoughts were get it under control before it heats the (NH4)(NO3) to a temperature that would explode. That being around 1000 degrees.
That little A at the bottom is where I live. You can see all the oil storage tanks at the top. This is just a few of them. The closest tanks are about 2000 ft from where I am. You can see where they cleared houses from around them for 2 blocks. Must have been an explosion at one time, I just don't remember hearing about it. But here the Port Auth does have exercises of what happens in an explosion and what to do to be safe. I guess that is enough training for the population and Fire Dept.

To me, I think there are some areas that are still too close to the tank farm. If one of the tanks in the southeast corner were to blow up, they could send flaming debris over I-87 and catch the houses next to that bend just North East of your place.

I am glad that FEMA is stepping up with funding to replace the school buildings that were lost.

The Boston Marathon Bombing, one year after is still getting "top billing" even here in Texas.

There's not a square inch of that finish line that hasn't been measured, or a single ounce of Liberty that hasn't been given up for "security."

Every single piece of shrapnel has been identified, and every victim acknowledged.

One year later, in West, Texas:

Never regret anything, because in that moment it's exactly what you wanted.

Well, of course they're thorough when it's a terrorist attack! But in West, that was just business . . . . .

"Thirty-one* states allow all qualified citizens to carry concealed weapons. In those states, homosexuals should embark on organized efforts to become comfortable with guns, learn to use them safely and carry them. They should set up Pink Pistols task forces, sponsor shooting courses and help homosexuals get licensed to carry. And they should do it in a way that gets as much publicity as possible. "

I was heartened by this report several days ago:

'A special place': Texas town tighter than ever 1 year after fatal fertilizer plant blast
