I have a similar mechanic. He does not believe in spending money.
I used to and maybe still do to a certain extent. As my housemate also go to the same place to get the car fixed (near college). She had a expensive breakdown once, almost 2 grand. So I kinda trusted the guy. But last year I had a really annoying continuous and almost weekly breakdown Me and my parents are really confused and somewhat bugged because they keep charging us and yet the problem still persists. Though it finally fixed completely after 2 months of continuous wreckage By then I had already spent tons of money on my old dammed car
Is your mechanic hot?
My car was broke down for over two years. Everyone that kept checking out my car said the repairs would cost into the thousands. Finally when I got enough money to get my car fixed the shop I took it too told me I just needed a tune up and the cost would be $400 instead of what everyone else was telling me.
My mechanic shop has a customer for life or as long as I own a Honda since that is what they fix. Good mechanics are hard to find. So much so I have not went ahead and bought my dream car because it’s not a Honda.
I couldn't get my mind off you all day.
An aside, my godfather [apparently he is that] owns a Toyota dealership in the Boston area and my mom told me that and gave me a great deal on the Camry I drive atm. I bought a supped-up 2010 Camry XLE and it retailed for $20k [it was around $22k after taxes and other fees] but he bumped it down to $16k. Of course I hated the fact that it was "super white".
It works here, and it should work in Birmingham as well, but in your large city you may need to ask more people.
Even CEO's need to get their cars fixed somewhere.
BOSS: I'm sorry, but I'll have to lay you and Jack off. SUE: Can you just jack off? I feel like shit today.

SANDERS-WARREN in 2016! The people are ready for change.
I have Firestone for routine maintenance... like rotating tires, alignment, changing oil, etc... I always change the oil with a deal so it is never over twenty bucks for semi synthetic and the alignment I pay for once and go ever five thousand.
Other work or repairs I am unwilling to do myself I will take it to whomever I can find ... a good way to find trusty shade tree mechanics is the local parts store. They usually have someone they will recommend on the sly as the corporate stores don't really condone that.
Most recent item i did not wanna do was a plug change out on a F150 5.4 Triton V8.... they notoriously break because the plugs are so fucking huge.... well most place charge 150 per broken plug plus 600 for the original work... that could be a 1800 dollar tune up.... so i found a local dude who knew they broke but said it was no biggie, charged me 350 for the whole deal....
My mother and my nephew have required calls to make before they ever authorize repairs... required to call me and tell me what is wrong, what they are charging and so forth... I have saved them thousands... I think greedy mechanics can smell the blood of the mechanically un-inclined.
I am my mechanic. I've never paid anyone else to fix my stuff. Ever.
Is he hot ?
NEVER LISTEN TO A ONE SIDED STORY AND JUDGE.
I was in the car biz for several years, from sales, to service, to customer relations. I even had the Zone Office sending me folks with problems from other dealerships. THAT is not supposed to happen! I was good at what I did.
That given, after leaving the business, and having auto technology zooming beyond my meager understanding, I found a dealership that was "up front", completely honest, and even advised against unnecessary work.
I've been dealing with those same guys, and buying my cars from them, for several decades. It's all about the HONESTY, which really does "trickle down" from the Owner's outlook toward their customers! I got LUCKY in finding these Guys!
WISDOM is the Knowledge you've gained ... After you could have used it! _Me
The world needs MANY more GOOD mechanics than it currently has...
THANKS for sharing such an AWESOME event!!!
Oh -- and based on your BJ comment -- I feel sorry for your boyfriend...
