Marriage Equality Nears Passage in Uruguay

The Deputies bill finally came to a vote today in the Senate after a long delay. The bill has passed 23-8. Since there were some amendments made in committee, the bill will have to be returned to Deputies to be passed onto the president. That vote should come within a few weeks. Not to worry, it passed in Deputies on a vote of 81-6, and the committee changes were not controversial.

It looks like Uruguay will be #12, if New Zealand or France does not get there first.

Another one in a growing list of countries getting it done faster than America.

    Exactly.

That's a problem with this country: It is slow.

Uruguay is slower than Argentina with its progress but they have a highly respectable President right now of true leftist origin. Every gay marriage bill has been propelled by leftists, and I feel he'll support it.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Mujica

Mujica is a man of very humble beginnings and he understands struggle and oppression. Mujica is a figure for many leftists in that he donates 90% of his $12,000 monthly salary to charity. He lives on a farm and drives an old Volkswagon Beetle. At any rate, there was wide support from the Broad Front party that passed it. Broad Front is associated with Socialist International like Hollande's political party.

    http://bigstory.ap.org/article/urugu...g-gay-marriage

Indeed tPresident Mujica has said he will sign it... it's all but a formality now.

Again, thanks to another leader and political party/movement associated with leftists... where are all the so called "libertarians" pushing this?

Reminds me of a former neighbor, a wealthy dentist who drove a 30 year old VW that barely ran. Even had a hole in the floorboard.

There is practically no significant opposition in Uruguay. It's an amazing model for America to follow.

Indeed. Articles have described Mujica as the poorest President in the world, but he's actually a very rich man because of his intellect and love for his people. He kinda reminds me of my late grandfather.

He refuses to buy any big home. Mitt Romney take a lesson lol.

Yes, the opposition in Uruguay even supported it... like the Colorado Party.

The Chamber of Deputies is holding the confirmation debate over the Senate amendments. It is really a formality at this point.

    Uruguay makes 12 !!!!

Final tally is 92-7. The President has pledged to sign in 10 days.

Uruguay becomes the second country in Latin America, third if you include Brazil with some states

Colombia is going to follow soon with debate starting on April 17, or the high court ruling goes into effect on the 20th of June.

The other countries are the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Spain, South Africa, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Argentina, Portugal, and Denmark. Also marriage equality is available in some parts of Brazil, Mexico, and the United States.

If you're counting that as a done deal, add France as well. And JoeMyGod said 14...

Absolutely, I posted a thread about the vote in France. The debate ends this weekend and hopefully there will be a final vote.

The real count is now 15, the dozen that now have marriage equality nationwide, and an additional three that do in some states. The US is the only country where its same sex marriages are not portable between states.

Correction, the final vote in Deputies was 71 out of 92.

I have a feeling most of South and Central America will legalize gay marriage before all 50 states in the U.S. do.

South America has its pro and anti regions just as the US does. In South America there is a clear east-west divide. The entire east coast of South America may have marriage equality before any central or west coast country does.

Uruguay, Canada and Argentina are the least religious countries in the Americas. Coincidence?

No, just a testament to how much religious drags countries back.

Religion robs people of reason much the same as political loyalty.

I'm a bit confused about what's going on in New Zealand: it looks like Parliament moved up Third Reading to yesterday, the 11th. If so, then both countries should be at the same stage: legislative passage complete; both waiting for Presidential Signature or Royal Assent. Just depends on who gets their pen out first.

It was on yesterday's Order Paper, scheduled for Third Reading but not sure if I'm following the schedule correctly, and I can't see any media reports.

Americans need to keep their guns so they can protect themselves from gun violence just like Nancy Lanza did. And like Chris Kyle did. And like Gabby Giffords did. And like Tom Clements did. And like Michael Piemonte. And Joseph Wilcox.

^^^ There is a thread for New Zealand, but briefly it was my understanding that the third reading would not happen until April 17 at the earliest.
