    Re: Your opinion on clubbing?

    I went clubbing in the 80's. Loved the music but I danced like I was having a stroke. NOT a natural, by any means. But I had fun regardless. The secret... EARPLUGS!!! I survived with my hearing fully intact. It was fun while I did it.

    Nowadays I'd rather take a long walk at the beach and snuggle with someone watching the waves.

    I enjoy clubbing for people watching. It's an interesting anthropological study.

    When I was 19 disco was king. There were precious few gay bars. There were no gay clubs. Everybody was thrown in together. Thinking back it was really cool in a way. Gay guys were the better dancers so I always got to dance...it was with girls but back then I didn't care. Straight guys pretty much left you alone. Lesbians got to dance with girls because back then no one really cared that much. Girls would dance in groups. I don't know if that still goes on that much. Everyone did the hustle.

    Then the 80s were about theme clubs.....Miami Vice was always popular or 50s retro or space age punk. There was even a club I frequented that was 40s retro called Key Largo...that was also a song...about a movie named the same thing. The clothes were like costumes. It was no socks and huaraches. It was a scream. It was booze, drugs and sex sex sex and of course the moonwalk. Then there was the safety dance and slide......o and don't forget the slam. That was only for the hardcore clubs. The drink of choice was a walk me down sweet Jesus

    Then the 90s were all the dark goth/emo venues sprinkled with the glitzy "fairy" clubs. That is what we used to call them. This is when there were clubs that were heavily into grunge, industrial, hardcore punk, thrash, speed and demolition metal. The drug of choice was X, I think. There were a few electro clubs, where I was. NYC had their club scene which was like nothing else. LA was all flash trash. O and there was the advent of gays in tiddy bars. I went to a lot of tiddy bars back then, mostly for the coke but it was fun to just hang out and dance, when they did allow it that is. Raves I almost forgot raves. The scavenger hunt raves were always kind of weird but they could be fun too.

    So clubbing...yes I did it. I did bars too and stayed at home to read as well. If you don't want to go out clubbing...don't. If you don't want to get drunk while out clubbing...don't. I was young, then not so young, then too old to be doing stuff like drinking way too much and drugs. Much of it was great fun. Much of it I'd like to forget.

    I will say this though. I had a few sets of friends that did not intermingle. It is much easier to have the different "styles" if you have different friends. I mean there are those that are NOT going to be happy sitting in your place sipping wine. There are also those that are NOT going to be happy in a loud crowded club screaming two inches from you so they can be heard. One thing though, I do have hearing loss...just something to think about.

    Re: Your opinion on clubbing?

    Since I came out in 2005, I have always enjoyed the clubs:

    First, I love to dance and used to go several times a week and lost 60 pounds;

    Second, I played in several sports leagues and so would make the different rounds and see guys I had been playing with the prior week. It was a great way to meet people (and get laid) so I had a lot of fun;

    Third, I met my hubby at one of the clubs on a Tuesday night for 80's Retro Night. It was after a bad break-up and friends told me I had to "get back on my bike and get riding again like a big boy." Went out not expecting anything and ended up marrying the man of my dreams a few years later (and just celebrated our second anniversary)!

    He and I still enjoy going out once in a while and seeing old friends. This past weekend we took one of this "straight" clients out and he began laughing that we reminded him of the "Mayors of Cobalt." It does seem like we know everyone between the hubby's work in theater, special events, and dancing while I am in sports and various boards...lol! But we danced and mingled until the lights came on. We don't do that often anymore; usually it may be out for a drink but we enjoy entertaining at home where you can talk, mingle, watch a movie, or just sit in the hot tub with a glass of wine!
