So back on Feb 12th, the IOC was apparently on something and decided to axe Olympic wrestling from the 2020 summer Olympics.
The IOC will be voting this May on what sport is added to the provisional status category for the 2020 Olympics. If wrestling is not one of them, it will take effect after the 2016 games, meaning no more wrestling in the Olympics. See this related thread discussing this.
Seeing as how wrestling along with track & field are the quintessential Olympic sports and it's what the Olympics were created for back in ancient Greece, it's kind of like saying they've decided to eliminate Baseball completely and replace it with only Softball because it's more inclusive .
There are plenty of female wrestlers out there, more and more of them are up and coming and those female wrestlers will not even be given a chance as this seems to also be having an affect on high schools and colleges dropping wrestling programs altogether. Unlike other sports, besides coaching, most wrestlers don't have very many options to advance their sport professionally after college. Most wrestlers look to either the Olympics, MMA or WWE to settle in some form of professional career utilizing that background. Perhaps it's time for a change?
to learn more about wrestling...
There is a petition circulating to effect change on the IOC's decision. The first step is to get 10,000 signatures on this petition to ensure wrestling is added as a provisional sport in 2020.
Fresh off his history-making victory last night, Kyle Dake has plans for the 2016 summer Olympics and hopefully beyond...
