Can Julianne Hough Use "It Gets Better" ?

Julianne Hough of Dancing With The Stars had broken up with Ryan Seacrest. As a part of her healing she tweeted out It Gets Better.

I thought that this article was strange.

But “it gets better”? Really, Julianne? You just broke up with Ryan Seacrest, one of richest and most eligible bachelors in entertainment. Now, I do not personally know Ryan. You can never really tell how a person is behind closed doors unless you’re with them. But I think it’s safe to assume that he’s probably not the worst boyfriend ever and while I’m sure she’ll get to feeling better, do I think it was inappropriate to hijack this phrase and use it to inspire herself so publicly? Definitely.

Was she only trying to be inspired and inspire her fans? Or should the gay youth community take offense to her using “It Gets Better” to get through a glamorous Hollywood break-up?

Personally, I think that she should be able to use the term and it could also work for her situation.

Does it work for her situation? Sure. But I think it's silly when she uses a phrase, which is attached to such a huge general struggle that a whole group of people still face today, as a response to a break up, something that might be considered trivial when it comes to bullying and discriminating against lgbt youth.

I don't think anyone owns the "It Gets Better" message. Hopefully, folks will use it as positive empowerment especially when they are trying to emerge out of a time of personal loss, adversity, or some low in their lives.

I guess she can use it, but I still don't like it. It's making light of a very serious situation, and it's a bit insensitive.

It also kinda reminds me of straight people who say things like "But what about straight rights?!" [when opposing things like gay marriage], or "Gay people should just stop whining and get over it". Well, not exactly like that, but you know what I mean.

She can use whatever words she likes. You can't trademark the words of It Gets Better. The quoted blog/article is ridiculous. If the author is that worried about the phrase being watered down they should walk away from their computer and go and volunteer with at risk GLBT youth and make a real difference rather than blog their "righteous anger".

Just a generic and common term for consolation... "Honey, I know you loved Jim and all, but I assure you you'll find someone new. It gets better." Oh NO! making light of something that was only coined a couple years ago!!!! Call the police!
