Judge may overturn Michigan gay marriage ban
In 2004, Michigan was on the target of Republicans—trying to get George W. Bush re-elected and to win over Mich. (which hasn't voted for a GOP since George Bush in 1988)—for a ban on same-sex marriage. While John Kerry carried the state with 51 percent of the vote, the ban passed, with 59 percent. It defines marriage to only be legally recognized as between one man and one woman. I would figure around 10 percent of those who voted for Kerry voted against the LGBT community. (Kerry won the state by D+3.42. The ban passed by 20 percentage points. Clearly not 100 percent of Democrats supported LGBT. And not all 100 percent of Bush votes were against LGBT.) Nowadays, a majority of those polled ( @ http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/...rvey_majo.html ) support marriage equality [from Mich.].

DETROIT — A lesbian couple’s desire to adopt each other’s children has grown into a potentially groundbreaking challenge to Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage.
Two Detroit-area nurses filed a lawsuit to try to overturn restrictions on adoption by same-sex partners. But at the judge’s invitation, the case took an extraordinary turn and now will test the legality of a 2004 constitutional amendment that stipulates Michigan only recognizes marriages between a man and a woman.

Re: Judge may overturn Michigan gay marriage ban
It would likely be appealed, but still it could be consolidated with the cases in Nevada and Hawaii to make an even stronger case for nationwide marriage equality.

Yeah, that one was totally off the radar. And it could suddenly make marriage AND adoption legal.
