Why do lesbian athletes that come out not get the respect as gay male athletes?

I notice a lot of discussion about gay men in pro sports and the issue of homophobia. Lesbian athletes also encounter a lot of homophobia. For instance, the Australian tennis player Samantha Stosur isn't "out" of the closet but other female tennis players have made fun of her in the media they say she "plays like a man."

However, I also notice there is little discussion about lesbian athletes and pro sports. Since most of the pro athletes that paved the way for gay rights are female shouldn't they get the respect they deserve? Look at Martina Navratilova, Amelie Mauresmo, and Billie Jean King, they opened the doors for lesbians in women's tennis. In women's golf LPGA legend Patty Sheean is a lesbian and a champion and Rosie Jones also came out as have a few other female golfers. In women's soccer Megan Rapinoe came out, yet they don't seem to get the respect they deserve from the gay community. Why is that?

They get respect from lesbians and (some) gay men...but alot of gay men are extremely misogynist. The other thing...women athletes have a perception that they are gay before they come out so I think maybe no one is surprised.

I remember sometimes the gay women's volleyball league would come in for beers on Sunday night...maybe 20-30 of them...and the men would make the rudest comments. It sickened me. Those women were really cool...and they tipped well. I used to get into arguments with the misogynist pigs sitting at the bar who complained about them. I know they certainly would not have applauded a gay woman athlete coming out.

Female athletes are like male dancers (not trying to something about how dancers aren't athletic, because they are), most people aren't going to be surprised if one comes out.

I have to agree with above posters. People usually can guess which female coaches or athletes are lesbians before they come out. So there's not an element of surprise.

Imagine a male NFL player wearing glitter sewn to his uniform for years. When he comes out as gay, no one would be a bit surprised.

Now...if a Miss USA or Miss Universe comes out as a lesbian, jaws will be dropped.

Female athletes in general don't get the same respect as male athletes - regardless of sexuality.
