I know there are quite a few those on here who are religious. Can you guys share with us why you are religious? I'm trying to understand because my b/f is religious. Just trying to understand.

When I was younger, I had a religious streak, due to having it indoctrinated into me in school. When appeals to the invisible proved fruitless, and slow realisation that there is no magic being granting wishes in a world of war and hunger, religion looked very much like a meaningless self masturbatory exercise to purge one's conscience of the fact that we're alone and left to our own devices.

Can't really help you. I come from a deeply Anglican family, and I rejected their beliefs (for a lot of reasons, mostly homosexuality, the contradictions/exceptions), and now live happily as an atheist.

Once I started examining religious texts, I just felt they were no different than other epics such as War and Peace. Religion is really a "six of one, half a dozen of another" to me.

Relationships are about communication. If he doesn't want to talk about his religion with his own boyfriend, that's an issue.

Sigh. Have none of you ever been anyone's confidante in the real world? I've had lots of people share their relationship troubles (or even just relationship events) over the years, and it doesn't mean their relationship is doomed or awkward or beset with problems or lacking in communications, yadda yadda.

In fact when people try to learn something from the rest of the world so they have some intelligence to bring back to their relationships, it usually helps to strengthen those relationships.


Anyway:
I don't have any intuitive connection to religion. As a child I saw that most people used religion as a genie that you rub to get your wishes to come out. As a child I thought genies were pretty cool. As I grew, it seemed sillier and sillier to me, and satirists like Monty Python had more and more the right opinion of it. I learnt about history and the sheer corruption of the church from Indulgences in the middle ages right through to modern televangelism and faith healing quackery. I can't imagine how anyone could find a more dignified understanding of life within religion than by simply looking around and observing the beauty and compassion in the world. In fact based on any religious principle I've heard so far, I reject that anyone could find a more dignified understanding through religion.

But that does not help with your boyfriend. He is keeping it quiet either because:
a) it's not all that important to him so he doesn't have much to say
b) it was important to him but he's questioning it and not ready to talk about it.
c) it's incredibly important to him and it will affect his future behaviour in unpredictable ways.

As his boyfriend I actually think you're entitled to know. I'm not sure how exactly to start that conversation except perhaps by sharing your own beliefs. Are you curious about religion? Skeptical of it? Opposed to it? Indifferent? Hurt by it? Moved? Intrigued? I don't know. Probably at least one of you should talk about it.

I'm opposed to it. I don't understand why any religious person can justify ignoring very large chunks of the bible, like how god commanded the Israelites to kill every man, woman, and child in the cities that they conquered. I understand this need to cleanse the world of sin, but don't tell me those toddlers in those cities were also sinners.

I've also never seen a list of things that we're suppose to ignore from the bible.

I had my parents examples and my grandparents examples as a toddler. Then I went to Catholic school from kindergarten through the fourth grade and then to weekly catechism classes for four more years. Also at that time half of the people on our street went to church. It was bred into me from an early age. I still believe in God and church but have diluted some of my church's teachings.
