Exciting New Diet Takes Britain by Storm! (article)

    Hah!

I've been doing this for months now.

It works so well that I have trouble keeping my weight UP!*

    http://snipurl.com/26ixq2y

(To be fair, I fast every other day, not twice a week as the study suggests.)

Joking aside, does it help you reduce food bills?

^In my case? Not really, Star-warrior.

I take my 600 calories every other day in the way of meal-replacement bars. They cost about $5 per package of 5.

If I had more time to cook, I could probably do the same thing by cooking low-calorie meals, but I choose the convenience of the bars.

Can you do it as a vegetarian? They seem to emphasize meat on the fasting days, which makes sense, as lean meat is filling and low-cal, but I can't eat meat.

Maybe you don't see the connection there, but........
Starving yourself is not healthy.................moving your arse is how you lose weight and stay fit.
There are people who still believe in miracle diets?
Don't tell me you also believe in Santa Claus.

I do see the connection but there's no need to come in here being a pompous self-righteous "I know better than you" asshole. Please find another thread to drum up arguments in. Either that or shut up and have a cupcake.

StickShift, I think you might be taking this a little to personally. I agree with what EuroSoccer posted. The only way to lose weight it eat less and excercise more. Diets don't work in the long run and some are not healthy.

Fad diets don't work,.......that's why they are "fads". Put down the cupcake and get your fat ass in gear. You don't have to spend your life in the gym, just get some physical activity, walking works wonders.
The reason "most" people can't loose weight is because they are waiting for a miracle pill, powder, or machine. There are people who due to physical/medical issues are incapable of exercise, but mostly people are just lazy.
I speak from experience, I lost 112 pounds in the last year from minor dietary changes (portion control), drinking lots of water, and walking an hour a day.

    Hey Stickshift.

    Slow down there gurl.

People have just as much right to recommend exercise as being as important as calorie intake in this thread as you do to make an argument against it.

Why are you flaring up so?

If you want to prove that you can do this diet and keep the weight off over the long term...then we'll all be waiting for your reports.

The reality is that diet without exercise is likely doomed to fail.

And as exciting as it may be to have these miraculous results by fasting 2 days each week, if the metabolism doesn't change.....I seriously suspect that 99% of the people who lose weight this way will not stick with it...and will likely be cheating right and left.

This is no more pithy then when you posted it in a previous thread. You need to expand your repertoire, or maybe just stick with a good ole' fashion "kiss my ass". Just a thought.

Where do you see me defending the diet? I think it's horse-shit as well. I have a problem with his attitude. I am trying to lose weight myself, but by eating less and exercising more. I personally think diets are crap. The only person I've ever known who's ever been on a diet, lost weight, and successfully kept it off is my father. Not because he exercises with it, but because he stubbornly sticks to it. If you want to defend exercise, fine. But DON'T go out of your way to be an asshole, like EuroSoccor. People want some miracle diet of "Eat this and you'll get the body you want". It doesn't work that way.

Feeding the Atkins diet faddists was really annoying. They couldn't understand why we had to charge more when substituting proteins for carbs. I was glad when that hysteria ended.

The gluten-free faddists are easier to deal with. They mostly just gripe that we don't cater to their wishes for bad bread; and since their issue doesn't involve (mostly) charges they're less apt to become irritable. We should be entering the beginning of the end with this one. (How do you know if someone is gluten-free? Don't worry, they'll tell you.)

I thought the Paleo diet was going to be the next big trend diet. Seems like it has the potential to be a new, annoying reincarnation of carbo-hate.

I like this fasting idea, though, as it doesn't seem to require any specific restrictions. Crosses fingers. It could bring me years of peace before the next craze hits.

    Why sure you can!

The version I'm on is the AlternateDayFasting version--the one in which you take the 600 calories every other day.

The first six weeks are rough, but at that point, something interesting happens--the body begins to produce more "leptin", which curbs your appetite. At that point, the diet becomes easy.

In my case, it's worked so well that I have to focus on eating enough on my UP day, in order to keep my weight from dropping too much. (Whole boxes of Little Debbies, 25 or 50 Oreos, etc.)

    Here's the original abstract:

Note that these subjects practiced the extreme version of ADF. The scientists noticed an increase in body health, but believed it unsustainable in the long term.

Why do you have to put an image in every post? No one gives 2 shits what ugly face you're making.

Do I exercise? Yes, but I should do it more and I acknowledge that.
Am I ugly? No, but I'm not hot either. I feel I'm average. But I have an ass to die for and you'll never see it. :P
Am I getting any? Maybe, maybe not. None of your business, whore. On second thought. You're not a whore. Whores get paid you slut.

Yeah mate, I am sure you can find lots of material on the net, but I do have some direct experience.
Two years ago I broke my leg playing football and I could not exercise for 5 months.
So I got a bit chubby and I decided to eat just frikking salad and lean meat for 2 months, I did lost a bit of weight but unfortunately NOT body fat.
As soon as I started training again, I lost all the excess fat in less than a month eating normally.
Same happened to my brother and one of my friends.

My point is that if you diet but you don't also exercise all you lose is muscle tone.
If you want to lose body fat though, you need to do lots of cardio.
If you want to stay fit both on the outside and the inside, all you need is a balanced diet, not a specific diet.
Eat everything but less of it.....and move.

Anyway, I am not trying to put you off, that wasn't my intention.
If you are excited about it, do try it.
But let me ask you a question, how many diets did you tried and how many of them worked?

Am I ugly? No, but I'm not hot either. I feel I'm average. But I have an ass to die for and you'll never see it. :P
Am I getting any? Maybe, maybe not. None of your business, whore. On second thought. You're not a whore. Whores get paid you slut.
Don't like me, deal it with. I'm a bitch to those I don't like.
    Don't be mad.
It looks like the only one that can't deal with people here is you.
I don't know who you are and could not care less for that matter.
And if you were not so bothered about me and my attitude and so keen to let me know about it, I would never have noticed you.
You are invisible here, and I am sure in real life too.

So you call yourself a bitch?
    Welcome to my harem gurl............

Ohhh....... and since you like them so much I have a present for you babes

You say you speak from experience.

Well, so do I. I tried exercising, and each and every time--without fail--it caused me to gain weight.

Yeah, I know--doctors tell you you must get diet and exercise. But until recently, they also told you to eat six small meals a day, too. New evidence seems to suggest that eating small meals throughout the day may, in some people, prevent liptin release from the liver.

So what ELSE do they tell us that we should do, that will, later on, prove to be "bad science"?

My guess is that one of those things is that "exercise will help you lose weight". Well, Eurosoccer, I ask you to think about this. What happens when you exercise? You break down muscle tissue. What then happens? The body, sensing that breakdown of muscle tissue, makes you hungry. Ergo, increased appetite.

As I have said, each and every time I've tried exercise as a method of weight control, I've actually gained weight. This is because my appetite spirals out of control.

Besides this: do you have any idea how much walking I already do?

    Oh, to answer your question:

I've tried all of the major approaches.

I tried low-carb. I felt very, very bad. In fact, I felt like my body was heading for a shutdown. I did lose weight--but at what cost?
I tried low-fat. I lost weight, and felt pretty good, but the food tastes like shit. Who wants to go around eating cardboard the rest of their lives?
I tried ultra-lowfat/Dean Ornish's plan. I felt horrible, and looked five years older.
I tried low-calorie Weight Watchers without exercising. (Remember--exercise causes my appetite to spiral out of control.) WW works, but you get diet fatigue after a while. Once again--who wants to live the rest of their lives eating cardboard?
I tried low-calorie on my own, using a Seinfeld calendar. This worked--for a while. Then diet fatigue set in.

Did I miss one? All of the other diets, in effect, mimic one of the aforementioned approaches in one way or another.

    Not that simple.

First off... diet is 80% and exersice 20%. So a healthy diet should be enough (although exercise is good for toning the body and overall health).

Second... It's more WHAT you eat rather than how much. The main problem with the western diet is too much consumption of sugar (products they don't add it to are a small minority now) and other simple carbs.

I eat 5 times a day and always full... I never have go hungry... and I still loose weight. I just cut out all the junk.

Calorie isn't just a calorie (they are always telling us this) and counting calories is a horrible way to loose weight because when you are eating much less it will only last temporary.

    That's another matter.
First of all only cardio makes you burn fat fast.................not all exercise.
But I also said that the secret of keeping fit is a balanced diet and some exercise.
Of course if you can't control your appetite even exercising won't do much.

But then again if you have a problem controlling your cravings, what are the chances you can stick with a strict diet?

Depends on what you mean by balanced diet. Surely portion control is important too. I was told to stop having a biscuit during my tea break. Those 100 calories per cuppa is maintaining a 7 pound/3.5 kilo weight over a period of 10 months that I could loose if I'd just stop dunking and just sip tea instead :/

^I don't normally have a problem controlling my cravings.

But when I exercise, I do, because exercise spikes my appetite.

BTW, a "balanced" diet tastes like shit!

Yeah my portion is no biscuits, ever.

I tried having a cheat day every Saturday but I have cravings days after so I stopped. After few weeks it's easier to simply not eat candy and junk food at all than to have cheat days.

I eat as much of healthy food as I want. The only portion I think of is the ratio between protein, fat and carbs. Don't need to think about the total amount of food (I eat a little less anyway without forcing it because when you eat healthy food, with fibre and healthy fat, you need less to feel full and the feeling lasts longer).

By the way, for those who may have an interest in it, I took an A1C test in January, to keep an eye on what the diet was doing to my blood sugar.

I tested at 5.6%, which is pretty good for a man my age.

I'm due to get tested again in April. I think this will show definitively what the diet's doing to my body. If my A1C goes up, I'll have to go off the diet.

But if my A1C level goes down, I will stay on this eating plan for the rest of my life.

Maybe Pat has Asperger's because he keeps mentioning your comments about it over and over and over and over...
