How often do you talk to your mom

I am curious how often you talk to your mom? My boyfriend is in his mid-twenties and talks to his mom on the phone at least 4-5 times per day, sometimes more. The calls are typically 2-10 minutes each. I know this is way more than normal but I also have a messed up relationship with my mom and rarely talk to her so I am curious what others do.

I have a long telephone discussion with my mother every Sunday morning for about an hour. We may ring each other quickly once or twice a week in between if something crops up. Plus I visit her a lot. Last year I was there for about 90 days altogether, although 2012 was exceptional.

used to be once/week, but now that I live locally, she tends to call more often (typically to ask for favors, wake me up at 6 am to tell me they're opening a new bakery in my neighborhood, etc)... my mom is also kind of* my landlord now, so I occasionally have to call her about apartment-related stuff (eg: yesterday morning when I woke up and saw that the upstairs apartment was flooding into my bathroom, I had to call her to have her call the plumber)


*I say kind of because technically my great aunt is my landlord, but she's in her 90's and quite senile and my mom has power of attorney over her, so she manages all her affairs

My mother passed in '08, but I didn't speak to her for five years leading up to her death. I didn't even know where she was living until I was told following her death. We weren't close; she wasn't mom material. My father wasn't dad material for that matter either. Some people just shouldn't have kids.

I live with my parents so everyday but I've been blessed with an amazing family so I'm really close to everyone. We talk about anything and everything so our conversations tend to go for hours.

I visited my mum's grave today. If your mum is there, spend time to talk together. Once she's gone, you'll never have the chance to do so again. There are times when I think of her, and how she would reply. Things I don't know of or how she would tell stories of the olden days. But it's all in my head now.

I used to talk to her every other day on the phone.
She lives in a care facility for people with Alzheimer's even though she doesn't have it (long story)

I see her twice a week, Monday and Wednesday. We ran out of things to talk about because my life is uneventful and her and my sisters can talk about British stuff (which I have no interest in) Downtown Abbey, Coronation Street.

I asked her all about her life. I found out my grandmother had bulimia. And that I was not pregnancy that the doctors had suggested she have aborted. I got the story wrong. she had a pregnancy after me and she aborted it because doctors thought the baby would have birth defects. I have been telling people that I might have birth defects and the doctors suggested abortion but she said no. I discovered that I had the story wrong. and I learned I might have been born in England but my dad was allowed to leave when he didn't have TB as he and others were thought to have had.

One day, I realized I had Chicktionary on my Ipad and we played that. Since then, we play Scrabble-like games (Words alone, Skywords, Upwords) on Ipad. We are evenly matched. We talk about the Housewives series (New York, Beverly Hills, Vancouver). She likes Dancing with the Stars so we will have that to talk about.

I went to see my doctor for results of a Cat scan (uneventful results for cysts on my kidney) and the first thing he did was thank me for seeing my mom regularly and I thanked him for taking care of our family. I even saw him stopping by the care facility one night (6pm) when my mom was sick.

My mom had postnatal depression after having my sister (1957). She went into the local mental hospital. She had shock therapy when they didn't knock you out. She said they would put you on a stretcher and your head would be in the doorway sticking out into the hall. The staff would go down the hall and shock patient after patient. She said it was a horrible experience.

But she never really asks about my life when I lived in Vancouver. Is that a normal thing where they think its your life and your business? I could have talked about my life when we needed topics to talk about - pre Scrabble - but it was never talked about.

I love my Mother dearly. My parents live less than 2 miles from me so I'm always stopping by to visit. I eat dinner with them quite often. Although my Mom's in great health, as she gets older I often think about what it would be like without her. Scares me to death. I honestly don't know how I'll be able to manage. Last year she had a health scare which turned out to be nothing thank God, but when I started thinking about losing her I came home and fell to pieces. I've never cried like that in my entire life. I totally lost it for about 20 - 30 minutes, just sobbing uncontrollably. "Life gets mighty precious when there's less of it to waste".

I live about a half an hour from my parents. I normally see them about twice a week and talk to my mom two other times on the phone. I have a pleasant relationship with my dad, but we don't talk much.

Last summer he became seriously ill, and has been in and out of the hospital and a nursing home. I now see them 3-4 times a week, and call my mom everyday. My dad is supposed to come home later this week. If that happens my visits will drop back to twice a week, but I expect I will still call every day.

My mom, and indeed, my older brother as well - they're the only DNA-related family I have - we've always had an unusual civil-yet-icy relationship. Basically we're literally DNA-related complete strangers. They have their life and I have mine. Mind you, my mom is the woman whom I have to call every year to remind her it's my birthday. You'd think she'd know, seeing as she was kinda in the hospital that night? Just sayin'... I cut her a great deal of slack this last year, as she was in the hospital with a serious infection she let build up in her leg. (My mom is stubborn as the day is long about doctors, unless she's literally at death's doorstep.) I call my brother, and he tells me that not only was she laid up in the hospital with a very serious MRSA infection that they need to do major surgery on her leg for (mind you, that's how I found out about the whole damn situation, was calling my brother); but he also lets it slip that she (my mom) had told him (my brother) not to tell me. If things would have taken a turn for the worst (as my mom is getting up there in years) and she would have died, I, still being a next of kin, literally, would not have known anything was even wrong until I had called down there asking questions about why she hadn't returned my phone calls.

If I sound resentful here, I do feel that I have every right to be (wouldn't you be?), but at the same time, I try not to be too resentful/hateful. My family is best described as, "It is what it is." /shrugs...

I talk to my mom almost every day. We live across the country from each other so I only get to see her every 2 years or so. My dad died 18 months ago and I miss him soooooooo much. They were married for 49 years when he died. It's hard listening to her tell me how much she misses him. I have the best parents ever.
