Probably not a single event in the history of Homo sapiens so this may not apply, but...

Learning to kill.

For food. Up until that point, our ancestors ate plant matter and the occasional dead animal carcass from predator kills. The ability to kill on our own enabled a constant supply of meat (read: protein) that allowed for rapid brain development and the emergence of intelligence that rapidly accelerated the evolution of our ancestors.

I'll start by saying the invention of the printing press.

You know what, that would be my choice too.
What made the Western civilization so technologically superior compared to all previous civilization was the ability to spread knowledge faster and make it available to the masses.
The printing press in that respect played probably the biggest role in human history.
Without it, most of us would still be working the land............

You know, for as much as the Internet has undoubtedly changed how we live, I feel like society itself really hasn't changed that much compared to the age right before the Internet. I'm having a hard time coming up with too many really earth-shattering events whose course was set by the Internet. It's probably one of those things where we'll have to wait 50-100 years to really see the full impact.

Fire, without which there'd be little else.

Fire brought cooking, which effectively halved, at least, the amount of food humans require. Broadly, it's a form of pre-digestian, increasing its nutritional value. Studies show that animals halve the amount of food they require — lions and tigers, for instance, eat only half as much when the meat they eat is cooked.

With humans, purposful fire allowed more time away from hunting and gathering to invent and discover, while increasing the brain power those required and affording a level of protection, and therefore, longevity — apart from that of better nutrition — never before possible.

Internet is changing and shaping Nations around the world......don't assume that other countries have the same level of freedom and wealth as Americans and Europeans.
Internet is spreading Democracy and knowledge around the globe.............this is the next big step for Mankind.

The development of language (or symbolic/abstract thought). It's the single thing that allowed us to think complex thoughts and gave us a huge advantage in our evolutionary history. Anything that came afterwards was only possible because of this ability.

I think the agricultural revolution. I don't think we'd have progressed as far if we hadn't settled, and stopped nomadic hunting and gathering. It gave early humans more time to learn, experiment and grow.

There are many to thank for the computer and the internet, but to name a few, thank Joseph Marie Jacquard, IBM, the US Defense Dept creating Arpanet, Sun Microsystems, William von Meister,Ward Christensen, Compuserv, Tim Berners-Lee and CERN.

Those countries are still falling prey to the same level of tyranny they experienced before the Arab Spring. I'm not yet seeing this kind of before-and-after where one would go: "wow, that part of the world is so different now, all thanks to the internet."

But that might change within the next few decades. As I said, the jury is still out for me.

I think the greatest change brought about by the internet is the way humans are processing information and interacting with one another.

Perhaps the most important thing NOT mentioned yet, was the invention of the boat. It became possible to travel between parts of the world which were entirely separated by water, and it certainly made Europe and northern Africa much more accessible to each other.
