A Group of Republicans sign brief in support of gay marriage

Looks like God's Own Party has a little Civil War brewing within it's own walls. In what is being considered a direct challenge to Speaker Boehner's own words. A group of republicans have filed a brief in support of gay marriage and a end to Prop 8 that is to be sent to the Supreme Court. While I am not a huge fan of Republicans, the more support the better. And nice to know so sensible republicans still exist. Now if only they had the republican voice in Congress.

I think it's progress, but it isn't much.

Most of the people on that list are "former" whatevers, and not that prominent. Former "top advisers" to former President George W. Bush; four former governors, and two members of Congress (out of how many?). A woman who once ran for governor of California, and lost. Et cetera. Moreover, this comes as Laura Bush asks to have a pro-gay marriage ad pulled in which she is quoted as supporting gay marriage (evidently Mrs. Bush feels she is being portrayed as insufficiently hateful).

Don't get me wrong. I am appreciative that a few Republicans are at least making an effort to say the right things.

But, where were they when it mattered? And where are the Republicans for whom it matters now?

Only a couple of names on that list have truly taken a stand,Ileana Ros-Lehtinen being one of the few to ever buck her party when it has come to DOMA and the Federal Marriage amendment.
The rest..simply can see which way the wind is blowing on this.

That's a few people throwing a bone... the main directive of the GOP is still pretty clear. Anti-gay marriage. Their "leading candidates" including Marco Rubio and that asshat Bobby Jindal all say the same thing.

Over 100 republicans have signed it so far. It is minimal, but still promising in my eyes.

No, they are humans. Just because they are conservative does not mean they automatically hate gays. It just means they have fucked up ideas on how to run a country.

People need to remember you can't always pack a group of people up so neatly.

Re: A Group of Republicans sign brief in support of gay marriage

The current theory is that opposition to same sex marriage in the GOP is primarily due to the fear of primary challenges that are well funded by the religious right.

Given that so few Republicans in office have signed the brief, I would say that theory has been given some convincing evidentiary support.

Maybe they can sign something in supporting Obama?

Look at it this way, I don't care if they support gay marriage. They still support policies as a whole that are incredibly destructive to America.

Former Gov Christine Todd Whitman is a signatory. She was always (even in office) pro gay rights. I think the anti discrimination law was passed under her administration. That was in the days of a kinder, gentler & SANER republican party

Also add Clint Eastwood's name to the list.

Today is the last day for briefs, so it should be an avalanche.

Populism. The radicals will still support the party regardless since they don't have the influence on their own to form their own crazy one.
