    Thistle Hotels Accused of Homophobia

The BBC is reporting the case of Nick Hurley and his boyfriend who were allegedly refused a double bed at a Thistle Hotel in London. Here's the story:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-21566002

and here's the Thistle Hotels site in case you're wondering whether there's one near you:

    http://www.thistle.com/en/index.html...FczHtAodJ2YAaQ

To be fair, this may have been one rogue receptionist and the hotel is investigating the incident, but it's still very disappointing news. One might expect it from cranks running Fawlty Towers-like establishments:

    http://www.justusboys.com/forum/thre...ight=Chymorvah

but not from national chains like Thistle. Has anyone else ever stayed at one of their hotels?

I looked at Thistle hotels on the recommendation of a friend, but we ended up going with something else from Frommers recommended by another friend, and not part of a chain. (in other words, cranks, running a fawlty-towers-like establishment in kensington and/or chelsea. We were fine there; no hassles, no questions, double bed.)

I wont be joining the JUB Jury to condemn the lone hotel employee until I see the video evidence of the scene (attitude, mishearring, alcohol, slurred speech etc) when arriving up just before midnight.

The link doesn't mention if the accusers got to eventually sleep in the same bed or whether they had to push two beds together in order to assert their rights.

Why do you think a reasonable response to any of those possibilities would be for the clerk to impose separate beds? That doesn't even make sense.

As you may have heard, drunks rule the streets of London at midnight and these three tiny sentences could have been slurred or misheard.

I want video evidence —not HEARSAY— before casting judgement on the accused and bringing out the pitchforks on this lone hotel worker.

Morals don't come into it Mr Grimshaw. Equal access to services regardless of sexual orientation is a legal rather than a moral entitlement in the UK.

The BBC article quotes the hotel spokesman apologising—We're sorry to hear this. We take matters like this very seriously and we are investigating.

So what does the JUB Jury do now? We could behave like adults or we could spend weeks behaving like drama-queens taking umbrage—

Or we could spend weeks licking our lips suggesting cruel punishment to the employee like Madame Defarge at the guillotine—

Ranked #651 of 1,081 hotels in London according to tripadvisor...and lots of negative reviews recently but for other issues like non-updated rooms and lack of amenities like a fully-stocked minibar and a clothes pressing station. Also, baths are a little dated and several people mentioned cracked basins. Needs to replace plastic mac like shower curtains and put in a rain forest head with good overhead action. On the flip side massive beds and very comfy looking. But nearest tube is 10 mins which seems inconvenient. If you are going to take in a concert at the Barbican well 20 minutes unless you take a taxi (expensive)... And don't think of bringing your own car - the overnight is charged at £30. This should be provided gratis to guests. Looking at the map the hotel seems surrounded by council flats and kebab shops so if that's your deal you'll love the surroundings. :P

Room service at £12.50 for four small sandwiches and chips????? Disgraceful and the flip side of their "budget" pricing for the room is they rip you off otherwise....

In conclusion this place does not even meet my minimal standards and should NOT be rated as 3 stars...more like 1.

As far as the situation with the beds go the receptionist could have been more clear in his wording about availability. But they were not refused a room though it was not the one they pre-booked. I don't think it's a clear case of discrimination because we don't know how far in advance they booked the room and did they confirm their reservation as such in a reasonable time before arriving.

Oh get the fuck over yourself Patricia.

    No one was imposing jack-shit.

They asked for a room with a double bed.

Hotel desk clerks are paid to give the customer what they ask for.

Leave it to you....probably an overnight hotel desk clerk....to once again be on the wrong side of the angels on this. I'd fire the stupid cunt in a heartbeat.

Had you bothered to read the first article, you would have read that the boys had been to the theatre. They hadn't been out bar hopping all night long.

Why did you just assume that they were drunk?

Yeah then the cunt comes back and fires you because turns out they know an owner of the hotel or worse they come back and fuck you up or fuck the hotel up. Firing for fairly unsubstantial reasons can have consequences. Sometimes vicious. But it's the UK and those sorts of things don't happen like in some other countries perhaps (check country that has the record for workplace violence on firings...yep starts with U )
If I was his boss I would have a word with him perhaps even a reprimand as appropriate but termination is a bit much...

From our initial investigations it appears that the couple booked through an online booking system which didn't work properly and so when they arrived at the hotel there were no double rooms available. We are very sorry if the couple feel they have been badly treated and we are now looking into the situation.

Having spoken to Mr Hurley we understand that the couple were not to upset that there were no double rooms available, but rather with the manner in which this information was conveyed. We have offered them a free night in one of our hotels but they have refused this offer. Thistle Hotels does not tolerate homophobic behaviour and will investigate this matter thoroughly.

    The complainant says he's a "front-end developer".

He had "train station drinkies" the day before and that he's determined to change the world.
