Richard 'Tom Good' Briers, dead at 79

Star of one of the best comedies on television on either side of The Pond.

LONDON - British actor Richard Briers, an avuncular presence on TV and movie screens for decades, has died at the age of 79.

Briers' agent says the actor died at his London home on Sunday. A former heavy smoker, he had suffered from emphysema.

Briers starred in the 1970s sitcom "The Good Life" as Tom Good, a man who decides to quit the urban rat race for a life of self-sufficiency.

I'm semi-surprised that he was known outside the UK. He's been an institution here for as long as I can remember and I've always enjoyed his performances. RIP Richard.

^ He's known to me. I truly enjoyed The Good Life and wish someone would broadcast it again over here. I think one of my favourite episodes was the time Margot went tramping through the mud and rain to help Tom bring in the potato crop. . . one potato at a time. I don't think I'll ever forget that scene, and I don't think I have ever laughed so hard in my entire life.

I suspect Tom and Barbara Good were well loved and known by most Americans who watch public television. The program was aired as Good Neighbors in the US. We saw him on many different shows, as well.
I recall the episode where Tom hurts his back digging potatoes and is forced to sleep on the hard floor. After Barbara tucks him into his sleeping bag on the floor, he says "I rather felt like it tonight". She replies "come on, big boy, take me" (my paraphase, of course).
Let's not forget Barbara's Christmas "vulture" for which Tom mocked her.

A lovely man, a great actor.

^ Not a problem. I had forgot about the back injury. All I could remember was Margot tromping through the mud. I also remember her rain gear, which is why I thought I remembered it raining as well.

Yes, thanks to PBS, I have been watching British telly all my life! I quite enjoyed The Good Life, and absolutely thought him brilliant as Hector Naismith MacDonald, in Monarch of the Glen. He was a wonderful comedian, a great actor, and he will be missed by many!

I grew up watching his BBC comedies in Australia. I saw him recently in a repeat of Midsomer Murder where he played a killer priest with a secret love child. Awesome actor.

Richard Briers was a wonderful actor and very well known here in Australia. I loved 'The Good Life'; it was right up there with the best of the British TV comedy shows from the 1970's, IMO.

RIP Richard Briers ... you will be sadly missed.

I remember him as the Chief Caretaker in the Doctor Who episode "Paradise Towers" as well. RIP

His latest performance that I watched was on New Tricks. If I remember correctly, his character tried to knock of Jack. And I completely forgot that he was the voice of Fiver in Wathership Down.

According to Richard's iMDb page, he was active right up until last year. His first performance was in 1956. I was 5 years old.

Well done, Mr. Briers. Rest now. You've more than earned it.
