    Marriage Bill in Minnesota

    http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2013/0...ill-this-week/

While talking with Esme Murphy on WCCO Sunday Morning, Minnesota Senator Scott Dibble said he plans to introduce a bill to legalize gay marriage this week.

Dibble believes this legislation has the momentum to pass after voters defeated a constitutional amendment that would’ve strengthened the existing gay marriage ban.

This is great. No surprise as supporters had a massive rally with thousands in attendance on Valentine's Day. Minnesota also has some gay legislators, including Scott Dibble, who will help write and push the legislation.

The GOP leaders have also ruled out punishing Republican 'yes' voters.

We will probably need a few of them. Democratic majorities are small, 72-60 in the House, and 39-28 in the Senate.

I know that scream4ever is from Minnesota, and active with the campaign. His input will be especially helpful in coming weeks.

I'm liking the trend lately with making legislation for marriage. Keep it up!

BTW Where is everyone today; I cannot find many new posts or threads, and I'm hearing Ryan and Paul making news.

    I think it's unprecedented.

2009 and 2012 were busy years, but this one is shaping up to be the busiest one yet around the world.

We are expecting the announcement of a bill in Delaware also. House Speaker Schwartzkopf said he expected it would come up this year. That makes four potential states that will pass legislation in 2013. Hawaii would have been five, but the bills missed committee deadlines. Then there are New Jersey, where a veto override is still possible, and California, which is obviously at the Supreme Court.

Also in 2013, we have supportive governors across the board. If you remember, that was a major barrier just five years ago. Now, the Democratic governors are the ones leading the way. It has had a major impact on the number of states that actively seek to legalize equal marriage.

BTW Where is everyone today; I cannot find many new posts or threads, and I'm hearing Ryan and Paul making news.
It does seem to have slowed down around here. The last posts in threads at the bottom of the first page are already two weeks old.

Any news those two make is centered on the fact that the public is just dumbfounded with the amount of stupidity an individual can come up with and then let leak out of his face hole.

That being said, I'm glad to see more legislation in more states for gay marriage. The list of states I could consider living in is looking like it may increase.

    Re: Marriage Bill in Minnesota

Thanks for sharing the news about Minnesota Republicans Jockboy! That'll certainly help the bill's prospects of passing. It will likely require bipartisan support to pass, at least in the House (we already have one supportive Republican, Tim Kelly).

The momentum here is indeed unbelievable. All our past volunteers are ready and eager to get back to work (many already are!). The other side is planning a rally of their own on March 7th, but we plan to already be calling people in swing districts and urging them to contact their legislators.

At the rally last week I actually saw Jason Adkins and John Helmberger of Minnesota for Marriage snooping around. Apparently they wanted to take notes from the experts

Speaking of Kalley Yanta, check out what she's been up to post election day:

^^^ Well that is a critical announcement, although we need it more in the House than the Senate.

Still, it shows there might be broader insurgent suburban Republican support.

Senator Petersen is also very young, only 27 for a state legislator, and his wife's dad is gay. We could see an age gap in the support as well. It's understandable that even as a Republican he has a different take on things, and when he gets further along in public office should he wish to do so, opposing this bill will be a liability.

Maybe not actually. In the House the two DFLers who voted for the marriage amendment are gone, while in the Senate two have already said they will vote against marriage equality legislation.

Of course strictly speaking about numbers the House has a smaller majority.

Passage is going to come down to vigorous support. If it's floppy, it will fail; reps will panic and vote no like the New York Senate.

    Re: Marriage Bill in Minnesota

It took my straight cousin pointing this out to me for me to REALLY grasp it...and this is her words:

"When you REALLY think about it, it's insane that this government that gays pay a boat load of taxes to penalizes them from over 1,500 benefits because the person they fall in love with doesn't have a vagina or penis. There's something really messed up about that"

and it really is. It was so perfectly and bluntly stated but summed it up in a really on point way. I mean, here I am paying a massive amount of taxes that benefits straight people and their off spring, but I can't be afforded a civil marriage and get a license at by the state because I'm inherently in love with a grown ass consenting adult?

what does the Bible and those who subscribe to it have anything to do with any of the logistics I just mentioned (aka~ walking to a state court house/ civil marriage/ marriage license/ government provided benefits/ equal in the law of the land)...how in the heck does the bible make an appearance in any of the points above?

    Re: Marriage Bill in Minnesota

It's worth mentioning that 20 years ago, Minnesota was the first state to pass anti-discrimination law to protect transgendered people, and it was another eight years before another state did so (Rhode Island), so the state has a legacy of progressive legislation.

Also, don't forget that every state with marriage equality got there through a bitter fight, with Connecticut possibly the only exception.

Not every state has gotten their floor votes, passed, and signed in one try either. New York, Maryland, California, and New Jersey have had to go through this multiple years, and we're still waiting on the latter two. California actually passed a marriage bill twice, in 2005 and 2007, but they were vetoed by the Gubernator; same story in New Jersey last year. While it's not an easy road every time, consistent effort does lead to victory. So press on!

I also think, politically speaking, an Illinois marriage equality win would be more beneficial in term of supreme court ruling, and in terms of attaining more momentum. But I welcome any and all wins! Let's go equality 2013.

New Mexico I felt was a bit too soon. I really think we should push for Colorado in 2014. The ban passed in 2006 with less then 56% support. Based on the math it should be easily passable in November of 2014.

I agree with Colorado, strong support there. Promising support in Oregon as well.

Nevada's latest opinion poll was 47-42, and it is an initiated amendment state, so maybe Nevada is a good shot too in a few years.

I live in MN. and from what I've heard from some friends is that former Gov. Carlson's (R) seems supportive of marriage equality. He's saying positive things behind the scene, but who knows what, if anything, that will mean. The republican party of MN aren't real happy with him right now because of his public opposition to the marriage amendment and voter I.D. amendment. He's never been one of the far right nutjobs to begin with.

The bills will be introduced by Senator Scott Dibble and Representative Karen Clark, both gay, in each house respectively. The bills will then be heard by the appropriate committees. Announcement of introduction could come at any time. Co-sponsorship is also expected.

How did he find that? I looked all over the MN website today for the language.

Anyway, it is Senate File 925, and this is its page: https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bills/bil...5&ssn=0&y=2013

It is a seriously well researched and well thought out bill that does not impinge on the states anti-discrimination law, one of the country's oldest.

I'm glad to see five cosponsors, one of whom, Petersen, is a Republican

The bill (file) has been referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

scream4ever seems to belong to certain circles of information too. He often has info before the major sites.

I usually will not read analyses that are too long, either, for lack of time doing other things, but some are worth while I think. When I see them I try to post the link to the relevant thread here.

Haha, yes. Actually, as far as states are concerned, I do firmly believe that Minnesota is on the top of the progressive list and I am a little flabbergasted that this whole same sex marriage hasn't gone through sooner. Minnesota has the longest running tradition of voting democratic in elections and has been in the forefront of passing progressive laws. Generally, I am happy that I was born in Minnesota, however, things aren't always so perfect. We still struggle with a large anti-gay babyboomer generation and general ignorant conservative farming community population that almost made allowed the marriage amendment to pass in Novermber. Now that they have lost, they've been bitching and moaning about same sex marriage and I can't wait until the inevitable happens and we can shove it back in their face (no pun intended) and tell them, "Thank you for bringing this issue to a greater public; nothing helps pass a law more than discrimination and biggotry".

Sorry. I'm actually quite flattered that people even remembered that I exist and am from Minnesota!

Now, sadly, I've been so focused on graduating, projects, speeches, research, and more research, and work that I have not paid attention to anything that has happened in the world really. So really, I had absolutely no idea that this was even a current event. I wish I could chime in more! If this continues to be a topic in the future, I will most definately be commenting.

If I were a justice I would ask during the conversation about political power if Paul Clement's employer would ever bring a DOMA repeal to the floor and relish the stammering.

I know that but you just know the anti-gays are going to point to stuff like this while ignoring the 30 other states.

The bill passed a procedural vote 35-31 in the Senate. The vote was purely procedural, and was proposed by Republicans to block it from being queued. It is a good sign, despite one 'yes' Democrat saying he might not support the bill in debate. Four Democrats voted against the bill's progress. We cannot lose any more than two and pass the bill in debate, assuming the absent vote is with us and everyone shows up for a vote.

Looks like the Republicans know they might lose, hence the half assed civil unions bill they are offering.
