Looks like the Republicans know they might lose, hence the half assed civil unions bill they are offering.
This is a total joke. I predict that in the end Kelly's amendment attempt will fail and he'll end up voting in favor of the marriage bill. He was a big supporter of the Vote No campaign and everyone is very shocked that he's doing this at all.

I think in his mind he doesn't think the gay marriage thing will pass and this is the next best thing. It's still a joke. As for being shocked,he is a politcion after all.

Sad to say but it very well may be dead. The only "good" thing is Republicans will back a bill for civil unions, even though that bill is a joke.

It's not dead until the session is over. We can afford to lose five Democrats in the House, which is 7% of their caucus. Slim, I'll grant you, but rural Democrats in Minnesota are not the same brand as those in southern Illinois. With all this commotion going on, I think they can be whipped to pass the bill, just as the US Senate is now.

Ninja, I know you can be a debbie downer, but let me say that I am working very closely with this campaign and know many exact numbers. The bill is much closer to passage then you think.

I don't like to be a debbie downer, just going by prior experiences sadly. I know in NY they dragged their feet as long as they could, was proud to play a part in getting it passed, even though my role wasn't as large as others.

No, you're pretty much a Debbie downer you constantly profess gloom and doom with all these movements, despite the obvious change of opinion in the country and the tidal wave of political support that's risen in the last few months. Understand - the gay rights movement is winning, and fast. We haven't had a single loss since NC, and even that was in the middle of a winning streak.

I don't see how the progress we've made can be seen as anything but phenomenal - I can remember a time when Marriage wasn't even considered a possibility in our lifetimes.

I fully understand the gay rights movement is winning. For the first time, gay marriage rights won at the ballot box in the fall. For the first time, gay marriage foes are the ones on the defensive and Republicans realize that running on an anti-gay platform in all but the reddest states is no longer a winning issue.
I also understand that something like a sure thing isn't so until the ink is dried on the bill. I do think there will be marriage equality in Minnesota and Illinois sooner versus later,I just don't know if this year will be that year.

Now we're debating where it will happen next.
I remember tracking gay rights from the mid 2000s as a teenager, and the cause celebre at that time was getting state anti-discrimination laws passed. There were many blue states without them, Washington, Colorado, Maine, etc. I remember how exciting it was to watch them go one by one, until about 2007 when we had really hit the ceiling on getting those done. I think that's when the LGBT rights movement switched gears.

Before 2008, I wasn't even paying attention to what marriage equality was doing. There were a few state cases going on and some bills being circulated. I didn't entertain that much was possible given how ridiculous people thought marriage was between two men at that time, even in liberal states. Then things started getting really serious with all the Prop 8 hubbub and then in 2009 when we had our first laws passed (California actually passed one in 2005 but it was vetoed).

Five years later, the political scene is unrecognizable. Those first laws we started getting passed in the 2000s were nerve wracking, not just because it was difficult to pass them, but because what the governors would do was a completely open question. We did not have the enthusiastic gubernatorial support we have today. Even Maryland's Gov. Martin Omalley waffled as recently as 2010. Now, there isn't a Democratic governor in a blue state who opposes marriage equality. All that needs to be done is get the bills passed. That's a big sigh of relief, and that it only took five years of serious campaigning, one wonders what it will be like in another five.

The point of this reflective essay is to relate my concurring observation that progress is being made blindingly fast and that there really is no need to worry, even though advocacy work still needs to be done. One year does not compare to the next. What was impossible yesterday, seems inevitable tomorrow, a small exaggeration. This is a time of instantaneous progress, the marriage equality singularity. Events are unpredictable and often shocking. Overnight we won over how many senators now? I've lost count. The bills in Minnesota and Chicago are so trivial when things are viewed as a whole, like the opposition. It's silly to get worked up about it.

Like the one woman who has been waiting 36 years said, the it's too early excuse is getting old fast. I was more hopeful at the start then I am now..there are too many cowards to do the right thing, which is another reason why it's stupid for the Supreme Court to go the states right's route. We'll be waiting a long time in that case.

Unbelievable. If this doesn't establish that civil unions are seperate but unequal, nothing will. In MN and elsewhere, people have fought tooth and nail against civil unions as well.
They only get offered when it's clear the votes would be there for gay marriage as a smokescreen to hide the fact that even if DOMA is struck down, civil unions won't be acknowledged by the Federal Government, only marriage.
I could be wrong..but it still sadly looks like the votes aren't there in Minnesota.

Some right wing nuts see that marriage equality is inevitable and now don't want the state to deal with marriage at all.

This bill won't get anywhere,as it would also effect straight couples as well. It's simply a smokescreen and nothing more. And I'm dispointed that people like Kim Norton are going along with it.

  16. #66

    Re: Marriage Bill in Minnesota

In the end, Norton will vote for the marriage bill. This is simply an attempt to distract from the issue and it isn't working for them. Today the legislature is poised to approve the budget, and an announcement of a vote will likely occur early next week.

It isn't working for them because it's obvious at this point it's clear civil unions are seperate but unequal and are only being offered as a way to stop marriage equality.

The problem is after this..it does get a bit trickier. Any state that has Republican control will NOT allow gay marriage. If Section 3 of DOMA is struck down,I could see lawsuits based on that in states that have civil unions if the Federal government doesn't acknowledge them.

One more thing..I know the ruling has likely been made already but with MN close to legalizing gay marriage,I am sure Kennedy will give the 5-4 ruling on account of states rights, too many now not too.
