Country singer Mindy McCready commits suicide

(CNN) -- They seemed so triumphant at the time: the lyrics to country music star Mindy McCready's hope-filled title track to her most-recent album "I'm Still Here."

Now, those words sound like a cry for help.

"On a cold dark cloud, with nowhere to fall but down, like a single, naked, unrelenting tear ... I'm still here."

On Sunday, McCready, whose turbulent personal life overshadowed her music, was found dead on the front porch of her Arkansas home -- the victim, authorities said, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

    She was 37.

    McCready leaves behind two boys -- a 6-year-old and a 10-month-old.

Just a month earlier, police had paid another visit to the house in Heber Springs.

On that day, they found the infant's father -- record producer David Wilson -- dead on the porch.

He too had apparently taken his own life. He too had used a gun.

McCready burst onto the music scene in 1996 with her debut album "Ten Thousand Angels."

It sold more than 2 million copies. Her chart-topping hit "Guys Do It All The Time" followed that same year.

In all, she put 14 songs and six of her albums on the Billboard Country charts.

But through it all, she was spiraling downward. And the fall was painful and precipitous.

She struggled with addiction and mental illness, often publicly.

In 2004, McCready was placed on three years' probation after she pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining the painkiller OxyContin at a pharmacy.

The next year, she was arrested for drunk driving in Nashville, and was beaten and choked by ex-boyfriend Billy McKnight, who was charged with attempted murder.

"Yes, things have been going bad," she said in a CNN interview in 2005. "I think it's God's way of getting my attention saying, 'You better wake up, girl. I have important stuff for you to do in life,' and I've definitely been preoccupied or sidetracked doing the wrong things."

Before 2005 ended, McCready had suffered two drug overdoses, was arrested on drug charges, was pregnant with McKnight's child and, authorities say, attempted suicide.

She attempted suicide again in 2008, authorities say, and had another drug overdose in 2010 before joining the cast of VH1's "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew." The reality show chronicles the life of celebrities as they're treated for alcohol and drug addiction.

    Celebrity rehab

Dr. Drew Pinsky said he contacted McCready last month after her boyfriend's death.

"When I heard she was struggling, I did reach out to her and urged her to go to take care of herself, get in a facility if she felt she needed," said Pinsky, who hosts his own program on CNN's sister network HLN.

"Her biggest fear was the stigma of doing so and what people would think if she, God forbid, took care of herself. And this to me is the most distressing part of this story. She is a lovely woman, we have lost her, and it didn't have to go down like this."

On one episode of the show, McCready performed "I'm Still Here," dedicating it to the other cast members, which included Dennis Rodman, Heidi Fleiss and Mackenzie Phillips.

"When I was writing this song, I was in jail," the singer said tearfully. "I never knew it, but I was writing for all of you."

    Custody battle

In the past few years, McCready waged a public battle for custody of her elder son, Zander.

In 2011, she took the boy from her mother, who had legal custody, and fled with him to her home in Arkansas, saying she had concerns over his safety.

McCready fights for custody of her son

A judge ordered authorities to pick up the boy and days later authorities found McCready hiding with Zander in a closet at her home.

In addition to her relationship with McKnight, McCready had romances with musician David Malloy and actor Dean Cain -- as well as admitting to an affair with baseball player Roger Clemens, which he didn't confirm or deny.

In 2010, Vivid Entertainment released a porn video called "Mindy McCready, Baseball Mistress" that featured McCready having sex with a boyfriend referred to as "Peter" and talking about her exploits with Clemens.

    Country outpouring

Sunday night, country music stars offered their condolences as they learned of McCready's death.

"My heart goes out to Mindy McCready's family. I knew her well," LeAnn Rimes said on Twitter. "It's a horrible tragedy. May peace be with her sons."

Carrie Underwood said she grew up listening to McCready. And country artist Terri Clark said she had some fun times with her "back in the day."

"I hope our society shows compassion and realizes the severity and reality of mental illness, and addiction," she tweeted.

Singer Wynonna Judd posted a series of tweets also calling attention to addiction and mental illness.

"It breaks my heart what addiction continues to take from this life," she said. "Addiction is a disEASE & not a character flaw. When the pain becomes too much, it causes people to want that pain to stop. This is just so unbelieveable & so sad."

    In her words

A year ago, McCready posted excerpts of a book she said was upcoming about her life. She acknowledged a difficult upbringing, personal problems and the challenges she faced turning her life around.

"I haven't had a hit in almost a decade," she wrote in January 2012 on her official fan website. "I've spent my fortune, tarnished my public view and made myself the brunt of punch line after punch line.

"I've been beaten, sued, robbed, arrested, jailed, and evicted.

"But I'm still here. With a handful of people that I know and trust, a revived determination, and both middle fingers up in the air, I'm ready. I've been here before. I'm a fighter. I'm down, but I'll never be out."

But Sunday, on the porch of her home, she may have changed her mind.

I don't think I have ever heard of her before and I have some compassion for her battle with addiction...but it is her kids that I truly feel sorry for. She had choices...they didn't.

When I was in junior high I went through this huge country phase and I loved Mindy. I remember thinking even back then that this poor girl seemed so sad, right to her core. It's so upsetting to hear this news. And to leave two little children behind... I'll pray for her, her family, and her children. I hope there is peace for her on the other side.

What a waste! Both she and the father of her 10 month old commit suicide. This is a much greater legacy than her music to leave to their child.

According to this Dr. Drew person, her biggest fear was the stigma of admitting she needed help. I guess the stigma of a double suicide is somehow less?

At some point, every human has to admit they need help outside of themselves. We need to get beyond the shame of admitting that.

    this is just awful.

And it kills me each time I hear of someone taking their own life. It must be an overwhelming feeling to be so down that you feel the only way to escape is to just end it all.

I hope she's found peace now.

If she had mental illness then my sympathies to her. But if it she was just looking for an easy solution to a short term problem, my only sympathies lie with her family and friends.

BTW, she also shot her dog.

Although mental health resources are low in Arkansas, it is not especially backward in social stigma about seeking help. I always found it very supportive when I was having depression. Of course, being a celebrity is bound to be a factor in that.

Just a terribly sad event. My heart breaks for those with mental illness.

Addiction and 'diseases above the head' (to paraphrase Dr. Drew) are killing them. 5 people who were on the show have died

They had an article on Cracked, pointing out that most of the restaurants on Restaurant Emergency go out of business quickly, and most contestants on The Biggest Loser gain most of the weight back. They're reality TV shows, not reality. They're looking fir compelling television, not longterm results. It's not surprising that many of the Celebrity Rehab aren't actually healed. That said, I don't know whether to look askance at Mindy or Dr Phil when he said she was afraid of the stigma of getting help...after appearing on a TV show called Celebrity Rehab.

And as G-Lexington noted above, these shows fail because they aren't reality,it's made for tv.

She was on Celebrity Rehab 4 years ago

(Season 3, shot in 2009, featured McCready, former NBA star Dennis Rodman, actors Tom Sizemore and Mackenzie Phillips, former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss and a handful of lesser known celebrity types.)

The finger pointing should go to the medical faciltiy she was at that let Mindy go back to a home filled with guns. Her boyfriend was a gun nut reports have said

Mindy McCready released from medical facility
First posted: Saturday, February 09, 2013

Troubled country star Mindy McCready has been moved into an outpatient treatment program after she was involuntarily committed for mental health issues on Wednesday.

A judge ordered the singer into a medical facility after concerned family members questioned her ability to care for her two sons, six-year-old Zander and nine-month-old Zayne, following the death of her boyfriend, David Wilson, last month (Jan13).

However, doctors released McCready and she returned home on Thursday (07Feb13) to undergo 21 days of outpatient treatment.

A source tells EOnline.com, "She was released because they think she is mentally stable enough, and she was tested for drugs and alcohol and everything came up fine. One of the reasons they released her is she didn't have any symptoms of what an alcoholic would have. There were no signs she had a problem to the doctor."

Another insider adds, "Being involuntarily committed and having her children taken away from her was eye-opening. It helped her realise she needs to focus on putting her family back together and moving forward from this tragedy. She is in a better state of mind."

Wilson was found dead at the couple's home in Arkansas. Initial reports suggested he committed suicide but police are still investigating the case.

He was the father of McCready's youngest child.

Guess who had a sex tape?

A sex tape featuring tragic country star Mindy McCready has been pulled from sale indefinitely following the singer's apparent suicide on Sunday.

Porn mogul Steve Hirsch, whose company Vivid Entertainment distributed the adult film, reveals his company has ceased selling the Mindy McCready: Baseball Mistress DVD with immediate effect out of respect for the embattled singer.

Hirsch tells TMZ.com there are no plans to resume distribution of the X-rated tape, which was released in 2010 and depicted McCready getting intimate with a former boyfriend. It is not known when the explicit footage was shot.

The title Baseball Mistress references her alleged affair with former baseball star Roger Clemens.

In more upbeat and less scandalous news, a suicide-prevention video McCready shot shortly before her death has been released online.

The footage features photos of the singer and her producer boyfriend David Wilson to the tune of new song I'll See You Yesterday. The clip closes with the contact information for support group Suicideispreventable.org.

Wilson was found dead at the Arkansas home the couple shared last month. Police are also investigating his passing as a suicide.

    ^ Yes.

Not to derail this thread, but I've about had it up to here with "Dr. Drew"

At first I liked him, even fantasized about what a year of one on one therapy with him could do for me, (not in a sexual way, pervs... But as the years have gone on I realize just what a little star-fucker he is...

Many of you may remember him from "Love lines" with Adam Corolla. First a radio show, then a show on MTV.

He seemed like a kind and educated person, (which I'm sure he is) but after awhile it became obvious his quest for celebrity began to override his desire to help patients.

Rolling Stone mag dubbed him the "Teflon Dr.", meaning no matter what horrors were happening around him, he somehow emerged unscathed. Mindy is the latest example.

I'm not implying that he's responsible for her death, but to head a show like "Celebrity Rehab" is a little distasteful, to say the least.

Imagine running a show where 11 people had died during the filming ? Usually, that would cause an uproar, but not for the Teflon Doctor....

    <end rant>

    R.I.P. Mindy
