Long story short here (even though the rant won't be) but I have a friend who has taken in a teenager whose parents found out he was gay and threw him out of the house.
Of course,they told him they "loved" him but as long as he chose to sin,he couldn't stay in their house.
Sad to say,he knew what their reaction was most likely going to be ahead of time and had thus planned for it.
He's one of the lucky ones in that regards. Aside from the emotional pain that comes from the two people who are supposed to love you the most,he is holding up fairly well.
As we all know,so many other LGBT youth aren't as lucky and end up being homeless,having to steal and often sell their bodies to survive.
It sickens me that in 2013,there are still so many parents that care more about what their church/temple/mosque and neighbors think then showing love and support for their child. It sickens me to think that their son or daughter "chooses" to be gay and see nothing wrong with forcing their child out of the house.
And it also goes to show how foolish we are to think that bigoted people like Tony Perkins,Brian Brown of NOM etc will change if one of their children comes out.
As this case shows with so many others,it sadly doesn't make a difference to them at all.

No $$$ for places like that in many areas. And many of the foster homes are run by people who have viewpoints pretty much the same as the parents who threw their kids out in the first place.

I hate it when hypocritical parents use 'sin' as an excuse to hate their own child. It makes me wonder how many Commandments they've broken when homosexuality isn't even on the list?

What there should be more of....and there could be more of....are safe houses where gay kids could find refuge and support. There are so many families that could do this, but don't because the networks aren't in place to help these poor children find refuge without necessarily having to get caught up in the whole community services and welfare nightmare.

Having provided refuge in the past to a kid kicked out by his family, as frustrating and emotionally intense as it can be, it can also be greatly rewarding.

Any parent that kicks a child out of their home because of their sexuality is no longer a parent and frankly, I doubt if they ever were.

I think some areas do have the $$$ to put up a community shelter for homeless youth (LGBT or not); they just choose to invest or spend their money in other areas.

I have an older friend that took in a gay teen after his parents "suspended" him from their house (for an indefinite period of time...who knows how long). I'm friends with the teen and talk to him often but I (and my older friend) can only do so much. It is truly sad what society is still like these days.

This is basically what my roomie does for a living. She councils LGBT youth who's parents basically hate them for being gay. I helped her out immensely with Catholic Social Teaching and how to relate their situation to their religion. Catholics shockingly have more leeway compared to some the evangelicals which are pretty much nonexistent in New England.

Thanks for sharing the story. It's sad but I think it will get better.

If your parents or friends can't accept you for who you are, then honestly I think you're much better off without them in your life.
