The Official 2013 Eurovision Song Contest Thread.

The yearly European Broadcasting Area's music extravaganza is held every May.

My excitement for the contest begins a little earlier than that, and this year is no different. As soon as entries are known and posted on Youtube, i get the chance to see them at the earliest opportunity, and i love it.

So far, only 25% of the entries are known. It will be at least March 16th before the last entry, Moldova this year, reveals its song. This is according to the Eurovision website calendar. It does not factor in Germany, UK or France, which could reveal at any time between now and then, or even possibly after the 16th.

Anyway, i thought i'd start with an official thread for Eurovision talk (more interactive than the group i adminstrate).

I think, of the 25% i've heard so far, my favourite is Norway. My 2nd favourite happens to be Denmark, so i'm guessing Scandinavia are in with a good chance of winning for a 2nd year running, since Sweden won in 2012. The contest is held this year in Malmo.

Haha. I don't have every song, but i've got a total of 83 songs from 2003 onwards which i particularly like on my hard-drive.

nycguydowntown - i don't know if it may air on one of your smaller channels, but there is a chance. It is broadcast, though not live on tv, the day after instead, in over 30 countries which are unable to enter the contest. Australia seems to have the largest cult following of such nations as far as i know.

It would be genius if they would send her with a song good enough to win.

The Uk could easily take advantage of all the international stars it has but it's not enough to send a known person with just a average song. Even the Blue song was better than this and look what happened then.

Plenty of slow entries I've loved and wanted to win but it still needs to be catchy. This song just sounds "la la la" the whole time and nothing sticks with you.

True it's a terrible soft-rock number.

We keep going on about the rest of Europe not liking us as the reason for us not winning, when mostly it's the complete lack of a brilliant song that does us in every time, hell even a good song could do it.

British pop music is popular in many of the countries which give you few or none points in the contest so...

You have so much better to offer but the songs you send always sound like leftover songs which weren't picked for an album.

I remember first seeing it spoofed on the Benny Hill Show back in the 70's... guess it's an institution of sorts in Europe, thought it was just a goofy sketch when I first saw it aired here in the US.

The Youtube video of my rankings was posted whilst i was away from JUB. I had to edit it with commentary a couple weeks ago because my rankings are no longer all relevant. Some songs have grew on me a lot, others i've got bored with. My favourite is still Norway though. If i did the video again, i'd rank San Marino WAY higher than i initially did.

The song that has most impressed me in terms of changing opinion, is Montenegro. I don't like rap in songs much at all, but this i like.

Its annoying the way they work it. The UK can only vote in the 2nd semi-final. I'm particularly bothered by that because i would have voted for Montenegro in the first semi. They can't win, but i'd like to see something unique in the final.

I like Denmark and Russia the most.

The guy from Lithuania was so cute. The topless men from Ireland were so hot but the guy sings worse than the average karaoke singer!

I 've included a couple pics of Andrej from Lithuania in my group, he is cute indeed, love his eyes and smile. Also in the group is a pic of one of the danish drummers. The danish song was awesome, magnified ten-fold by the fact that this drummer was giving me a right hardon.

I can at least agree with you about The Netherlands. I mean, she sings it well, but for me its just haunting, makes me feel the complete opposite of how i love Eurovision to make me feel, happy.

Yeah, i mean, tbh, Iceland is not a song that i like. When i first heard it i was quite dissapointed because i always look forward to what Iceland is going to enter because i normally always like it. Not this year though. But there is no denying that it is sung well and is a beautiful song in its sound (not understanding Icelandic so i judge the best i can). Its just for me i like a song with a real pulse. Since i like dance music and electro beats then Norway was bound to be my favourite this year because its nearest to that preference.

I am absolutely gutted that Israel and San Marino didn't qualify in the 2nd semi. I was gutted about Montenegro in the first, but kind of knew that it wouldn't go down to well for Eurovision, but i was sure that Israel and San Marino would breeze through, so yeah, thats a shame.

I'm so looking forward to Saturday now though. I want to see the Big 5 and Sweden on that stage now that we have seen the other performances. I expect Denmark has pretty much got this in the bag, and although i'm personally routing for Norway (and UK obviously), it will be a worthy winner, i like it even more than i liked Sweden last year.

Oh and my last comment on the semis, i'm thrilled that Lithuania got through. It has been massively under-rated imo.

I have a different approach to it all - I always tend to make my Eurovision experience a special one for just the Saturday night itself - so I'll be geared up and ready to go at 8:00pm I can guarantee that, BUT I'll not have heard any entries or bothered about the semi-finals - I've never even heard the U.K. entry yet, lol.

Then after the one-off hearing of all the songs on the night I'll make an immediate on-the-spot decision and phone my vote in - and I'll also try to post on JUB and make a thread in HT before the scoring (I did that last year) - and post vids of my fave songs.

It'll all be a mad rush tomorrow night but I'm really looking forward to it!

Semifinal 2 was the weakest semi final I've seen in years. Damn, I had a hard time finding ONE song to root for, and 16 acts competed in the semi final.. says it all really. And for heavens sake.. ROMANIA made it! Have you heard the song/scream/whatever the fuck that was? Sooooooooo bad. Yikes Semifinal 1 was definitely a lot stronger.

I am like opposite of most people.. I mostly hate some of the favorites to win (Finland, Iceland, Norway, The Netherlands). I do love Georgia, Denmark and Ukraine though. But I think this year overall is very weak.

I like happy songs, catchy songs.. I don't like dark and depressing songs, which is why I don't like Norway or The Netherlands this year. Iceland is slightly dark too, and boring as fuck. I'm sorry, but that song is a total snoozefest. I'm surprised it made it to the final.. then again the semi final was extremely weak and at least he sang well and it was somewhat authentic. Finland was a mess though.. cheap tacky and the lesbian kiss was obviously just a cheap ploy to get horny men to vote. But it worked, horny men voted for them. So I guess they deserve some credit for that, lol.

My mum has exactly the same approach. She watches just the final. I like to watch the semi-finals so that i can hear every entry live, it can make quite a difference to the video releases beforehand. And some of my favourite entries have been non-finalists, like Bulgaria last year, and Israel, Montenegro and San Marino this year.

Tomorrow IS the best show of them all of course. The UK should do much better than last year. I've seen a sneak peek of the rehearsal for our entry and at least it beats Mr Humperdinck last time around!

Mostly forgettable especially the first seven or so....

Romania - WTF?? Does that get the gay vote or what?

U.K. - Ah good old Bonnie bless her heart.

Sweden - didn't that guy look like AshyPhoenix?

Also - never expected to see Cascada on the show! Alas, that song I heard can't beat their thumpingly excellent 2009 hit 'Evacuate The Dancefloor' which was a No.1 over here back then.

Anyway....

Malta and Italy were good solo efforts, maybe my joint third place....

Denmark was a good song, gets my second place....

"Birds" is absolutely fantastic. It's almost another "Windmills Of Your Mind"...and the best vocal performance.
I can't vote for Anouk, so my next favourite is Belgium.
Much appreciation for the falsetto guy...and he's so sexy. Actually I think the whole show is a bit gay'd up (...)

But most songs this year are average or bad and all that light and firework doesn't make it any better.

Interesting that so many non-UK countries sing English lyrics eventhough French is the most beautiful language.

Finland was tacky, cheap and the lesbian kiss was obviously only used so horny men all over Europe would pick up the phone and vote for them. Disgusting that they had to do that. They should have let the song speak for itself, making out with anyone wasn't necessary.

I didnt like the winner song :-( My favorites were Norway, Iceland and the sexy boys of Greeeeeece.

But I like the show. It was ironic and self-deprecating, very good.

And don´t forget: Two men kissed on stage (and two girls also). Maybe it was the first time for the tv-viewer in Turkey, Russia or Belarus it happens on TV.

I love the semi-homoerotic Azerbaijan entry... the guys were so cute. The woman in the end seemed kind of out of place, maybe they were worried it would be too gay for their homeland to handle without her haha.

I agree about everything basically! I loved Denmark, Ukraine and Azerbaijan this year, and they were the top 3! So I couldn't be more happy

I loved the stage show from Azerbaijan too! Everyone kept talking about how gay Finland was, and how campy Romania was.. but hello! Did you see Azerbaijan? The guy was basically flirting with the guy inside of the box. And then all of a sudden the woman came out of nowhere and I guess she was supposed to be his "love interest" or something. It just made me laugh. They had no chemistry whatsoever, it just looked so weird, especially considering he was flirting with the boxman right up till that happened. LOL. I know homosexuality is forbidden in Azerbaijan, so it makes sense that they had to "straight it up" with that chick in the red dress at the end, but I think it's wonderful that it was still overall gay, and it must be one of the few times he's allowed to be himself, so that's cute I agree about the boyfriend in the green room. I thought about that too!

I think Ireland was robbed! Just like we were last year. Call me crazy, but I actually liked Norway's entry from last year better than this year's entry. It was less depressing and more catchy. Speaking off.. Romania didn't deserve to get so many points.. I just o_0 I think people voted for it just because it was so so so bad, you know? It was so bad it became good. That's my only explanation.

Denmark deserved to win, I agree! It was a really cute song. I know a lot of people hate it, but it was my favorite since the start, so I was thrilled when it won
