There are actually and the logic they used is the same thing that was used against them 50-60 years ago.

Here's the update on it. We'll have to see.

Actually the Black Caucus is urging a Yes vote. The NAACP has come out in support. It's separate churches that are putting pressure on them.

Greg Harris himself has confirmed they have the votes. I expect a vote to be scheduled on Tuesday or Wednesday for Thursday or Friday.

I'm tired of these churches not being taxed for being involved in political activity. I don't follow their religion so their option on my civil rights means nothing.

On gay marriage: Despite lots of brave talk and another plug last night by President Barack Obama, the bill to allow same-sex marriage in Illinois reportedly is short two or three votes, with stiff opposition among many African-American lawmakers.

This one has been a top priority for much of the state's Democratic leadership. If it doesn't pass, a lengthy and likely bitter post mortem is coming as to who screwed up.

I'm hoping this guy is wrong but I sadly feel he is right on this one. I know what the Black Caucus and NAACP's position is on this but the fact remains (as pointed out in this article) there are many black lawmakers who are no different then the usual Republicans culprits who fail to understand there is a separation of church and state.
And more galling to me..how they claim they suffered worse and therefore it's okay to discriminate against us.
The Civil Rights movement is not a contest to see which group suffered worse,it's about stopping discrimination and equal rights and to hear them siding with people whom(behind closed doors) think they should still be seperate but equal sickens me.
It should be noted that most of the black lawmakers are on our side..those that aren't..time to do what we did in NY and RI and primary them if possible.

One final thing..(I've take up this whole thread, sorry about that) is that I'm aware there will be many other Democrats voting no. Which is why the finals undecideds are going to come from this group.
And it shouldn't be that way.

Same-sex families have been invited into Madigan's box, which is a great sign the vote will be happening soon!

    Live stream everyone. Good luck.

I also wanted to say... IF we lose in IL today, it's a temporary loss. DON'T be discouraged. IL will be like NY the first time around. We'll just come back with a bill next year and win. Or you know, the SCOTUS can make it happen....

According to my friend who's there right now, there'll be no vote until November at the earliest :/ I guess it's better to postpone than to loss, but it's sad for a state that has the ambition of being more than just another piece of Midwest...

I wish I had been wrong on this one..I really did. But if they had the votes,it would have been called a long time ago. If DOMA section 3 is struck down, then it will be law suit time. Civil Unions aren't acknowledged by the government and if Illinois isn't willing to do the right thing on its own, then time to make the courts do it instead.

Re: Illinois Senate Marriage Equality Debate

People have to understand (and hopefully Kennendy and Roberts will as well) that just beause a state has a Democratic majority doesn't mean squat. Rhode Island passed marriage equality passed in RI because the three main Democrats whom were blocking it realized after almost being primaried that they wouldn't get that lucky a second time.
Keep in mind many of the downstate and rural Democrats were going to vote no as well, hence the reason the Black Caucus was heavily lobbied to begin with. That does need to be highlighted in addition to the fact many of the black pastors whom did robocalls against gay marriage.
It might be a moot point. Not sure about the Prop 8 ruling if it gets punted but if Section 3 of DOMA is struck down,it will become clear civil unions are seperate and unequal and won't last long in states that have them and ban gay marriage.
One way or another marriage equality will come to IL.

Re: Illinois Senate Marriage Equality Debate

What I think honestly happened was several supporters at the last minute backed out due to a desire to wait until the deadline for primary challengers to register had passed. This was alluded to in several news articles. In other news Madigan has extended the deadline for the bills passage until August 31st. Could they be planning a special session this summer perhaps?

They could but only itme will tell. I do think a lot of places are waiting until the Supreme Court ruling as well. IMO,Section 3 of DOMA is going to be struck down on state's rights issues. What they do with Prop 8 is anyone's guess at this point. Even if they punt on Prop 8.there will be a clear case for states that have domestic partnerships or civil unions to show that they are unequal to marriage because the federal government won't acknowledge them.

Re: Illinois Senate Marriage Equality Debate

The special session in Illinois will take place next month, shortly after the Supreme Court has issued their rulings. Illinois Unites for Marriage is already stepping things up, scheduling more lobby days and developing better strategy (incumbent protection, coalition building, etc.). If things stay the course they are we have a good chance of passing the bill.

We have to wait and see. IF Doma is struck down,I see marriage equality happening because there will be a nice fat lawsuit waiting to happen if it doesn't.
