Iceland is planning to ban online porn

    Say it isn't so
Iceland could become the first Western democracy to attempt censorship of the internet under radical proposals to block online pornography.

The government is considering introducing internet filters, such as those used to block China off form the worldwide web, in order to stop Icelanders downloading or viewing pornography on the internet.

The unprecedented censorship is justified by fears about damaging effects of the internet on children and women.

Ogmundur Jonasson, Iceland's interior minister, is drafting legislation to stop the access of online pornographic images and videos by young people through computers, games consoles and smartphones.

"We have to be able to discuss a ban on violent pornography, which we all agree has a very harmful effects on young people and can have a clear link to incidences of violent crime," he said.

Methods under consideration include blocking access to pornographic website addresses and making it illegal to use Icelandic credit cards to access pay-per-view pornography.

A law forbidding the printing and distribution of pornography is already in force in Iceland but it has yet to be updated to cover the internet.

The proposals are expected to become law this year despite a general election in April.

    More on this story...

Wow. Without porn, won't it make 99% of everyone's computers there pretty much worthless? Porn is pretty much 95+% of my computer usage.

I wonder if that will force people to go back to the old ways, and start frequenting bars and public restrooms more?

Re: Iceland is planning to ban online porn

In other news, Iceland announced that it will now be illegal for Katla to erupt or to close transatlantic airspace with any kind of ash cloud or other emission. Millions of British holiday travellers planning trips to Ibiza were so overjoyed that they even forgave Iceland for stealing all the pounds sterling during their last financial crisis.

    It won't work.

But is it wrong to try? Violent porn is more than just a matter of one person's taste differing from another's. Banning one kind of porn is different from banning porn.

Do you want your government to make child porn illegal, or would you also like them to stop it from actually getting to your computer.

I'm sure this is another new 'liberal left' social policy, like when they criminalized prostitution in Sweden.

Gunnarsdottir stressed that the measures were not “anti-sex.”

“[The proposal] is anti-violence, because young children are seeing porn and acting it out,” she said.

..... young kids go out and recreate violent porn? Does something actually support this claim?

THat's how I feel too. It's not like there isn't a plethora of child-monitoring/child-restricting programs parents have available to them assuming they even want to give their kids unmonitored access to the WWW anyway. It's the same thing that makes me mad about the videogame argument, these things have warnings on the labels, who is giving 11 year olds the $50 to go to the store with, or whose credit card are they using to purchase the games online? The parents. Don't blame the friggin videogames.

I will group this with the general particularly US-based cultural hysteria about everything even tangentially sexual : if Janet Jackson's left breast is a danger to us all , if your President can be impeached for doing something sexual with a 22-year old woman , " violent porn" is obviously more dangerous .

The idea that only conservative movements oppose pornography is an imputation that is not nor has not been accurate, either in Iceland or elsewhere. Most social progressives, like feminists, absolutely oppose pornography and the objectifying of women (the vast, vast majority of porn is heterosexual of course, along with the demographics.) Then there is the tendency of it to drift into pederast pandering, as it so often does on JUB with the posting of pictures of underage subjects or certainly the appearance of subjects who intentionally appear underage.

That other causes are more important probably gives the impression that the Left is supportive of porn. Whereas many on the Left would not want or bother to attempt censoring porn, to portray them as pro-pornography is a distortion and just wishful thinking.

Social conservatives and religious conservatives may embody many undesirable values where gays are concerned, but they are not some enclave of opposition to pornography: a lot of the Left shares the view that it is not a positive influence in society, and for many, it has nothing to do with religion.

It says here that this is a proposal by Iceland's more conservative politicians. they're just discussing it.

    According to some Icelandic politicians,....

Remember, Mitt Romney made a pledge to censor internet porn and Rick Santorum wanted to ban it also. And there were people in this forum who supported these two. Iceland has nothing on American right wing politicians.

What you linked to is Northern Territory National Emergency Response Act of 2007

This is an update from 3 months ago:

Australia backs down on Internet porn filter plan, while Egypt pushes ahead

    http://www.digitaltrends.com/web/aus...-pushes-ahead/

Doesn't sound like she's banning porn to me.

Around here there's a ban on internet porn if you're using a local public library computer bank. They all have filters. A lot public wi-fi hot spots also have bans. Last year I was in a waiting room at the Mayo Clinic (took my sister there) and couldn't access JUB using their wifi. It was banned.

Forgot to add this in my previous post, sorry.
