When you see an apple or a banana, does it look like it sounds like 'apple' or 'banana' to you? You understand a little French perhaps, so pomme and banane may ring a bell, but, at the end of the day, it's still two types of fruit. I see the chinese characters similar to this. Its an object albeit a written shape that one has memorised the sound and meaning to.

I pretty much use it interchangeably. Sometimes I'll call it Chinese New Year, sometimes Lunar New Year, sometimes Vietnamese New Year. Depends who I'm with I guess.

I watched this on TV (CCTV, if I remember)! It's crazy! She must have just memorised how the words sound but she did it well for someone who doesn't know how to speak Chinese!
