What movie left the greatest impression on you?

For me, it has to be Requiem for a Dream:



(Ellen Burstyn was, and is, incredible.)

The way it portrays the endless downward spiral of addiction is amazingly powerful. I love how it doesn't have a happy ending, as well. You just know that things will never get better for the characters who have left such a mark on your psyche. This movie stuck with me for a very long time after I first watched it.

My favorite movie is The Royal Tenenbaums. It speaks candidly about a dysfunctional family who puts on a facade to make them appear normal but is far from it. It made me realize that there is no sense of "normalcy" and that we are all in fact, abnormal.

There are some.

Maybe the most impact : Dead Poet Society. I was so in love with the two main teenager characters. It was during my boarding preparatory school, I was 18yo I think. I watched it many times in a row, cried so much every time, and now I have difficulties watching it.

Another movie I can't watch again, I watched it only once and never could make me wtach it again : brokeback mountain. Their pains resonated with me so much.

Like Ashy, Requiem for a dream had also a great impact. Great movie, very disturbing and cementing my will to never use drugs.

You're going to have to forgive me, because I find it VERY hard to choose one.

The first movie that made me realize film could be a powerful and meaningful art form was The Piano (back when I was a teenager working in a movie rental store).



Then the film that really moved me and I think changed me in a lot of ways was The Thin Red Line (this came along my freshman year of college, so maybe I associate the film with that greater change). By far my favorite film of all time.



And then most recently came a film that moved me and was pure art (in my mind). The Fall.

If we're talking about movies (strictly), I think I'd have to say Under the Tuscan Sun.

It just reminds you how during the shittiest times of your life...that sometimes things really DO happen for a reason. And the road may lead you to the life that was meant for you.

Basically, life sucks--but you move on, and keep going. And sometimes there are better times ahead.

Lately, ParaNorman...

I thought the characters where sweet and real, the concepts honest and ambitious, the theme enduring...

The concept of a self-fulfilling prophecy -- basically, the delusional mind CREATES and PERPETUATES that which it either FEARS or LONGS to perceive. Either way, the mind creates what the mind is COMFORTABLE WITH, not what is REAL.

Many interesting ideas where touched upon, but that one sings ALONE, HIGHER and ABOVE all others in the movie.

There is no comparison to like films.

Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, contemporaries which are not even mentionable to this expression--why where they made? To make money apparently, as they have no other worth. So a thing can make money but be of NO WORTH.

Surpise, reality TV. NOW, shallow existence.

The same mind-set perpetuates SLAVERY, SUBJIGATION/DOMINATION, wrong ways of beings -- read a book -- maybe "Native Son" for a little perspective. It's a rare USA work of art, so either way, LEARN and GROW.

The most moving part of it for me, like I'm sure many others, was when the authorities came back through to find survivors, seeing deceased people floating in the water...some being children. It's the only movie to date that can make me cry from just THINKING about it. It is permanently etched in my memory.

The Fifth Element - It tells some primordial truths about life. It is also cute and funny. I always cry at the end.
Shelter - It gives hope to all of us gays who think we can't have a normal life.
Prayers For Bobby - It could have been made about me.
Brokeback Mountain - It breaks the heart. I have decided that I won't screw my life up as those two.

War of the Worlds (any version): showing humans are not the most resilient beings since 1898 ever.
Atonement: when the troops reach the abandoned beach and the abandoned soldiers, and during the ending, where a happy scene was shown - except that we know it never happened.

Probably "The War Game": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_War_Game I defy anybody to see this harrowing film and now come out white and shaking. It was the first film which made me realize the power of the medium, other than just for light entertainment. You can watch it on youtube, but there's a world of difference between a 6 inch video on a computer screen, and seeing it on a big screen in the cinema.

1980's our year was ushered into the hall to watch Threads. It's about thermonuclear war and how it would have affected people in Britain. We all left with our minds full of worry for the future. It was at the height of the cold war, so..........

I love Miyazaki's films because unlike almost anything else they give me a fleeting sense that there is something right in the world after all. Spirited Away is my favorite.



Terence Malick's The Tree of Life still fills me with an ache of recognition when I think of it.



And of Tarkovsky's movies, Stalker is the one that lingers in me the most.
