I don't know how people here know of the You Can Play project that was started by Brian Burke, General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs after his son died. It was to fight homophobia in sports.

It's a really important and good thing, and I'm not surprised it's coming out of Canada. I can't imagine a US sports team coach doing something like this. I hope his effort gets more play, esp here in the US. I imagine athletics have lost a lot of great players over the years because they felt they weren't wanted.

"He's totally gay. Look at his eyes. You know he's never spent more than two minutes in any box off the ice." Arguments, accusations, animated gifs, four page thread, and thousands of peepers for your video.

Or, claim you heard one of the guys in the video is actually a homophobe who said how much he hates queers in a bar you visited...then have us guess which one it is. This combines the hypocrite quotient with an interactive game, and thus guarantees tons of views.

No, these suggestions aren't serious. But it's the way of the internet. Simple and positive messages get a quiet round of applause, then it's back to the other stuff.

I think it is a good effort, but I don't think the problem with homophobia in sports is with the players but more with the supporters.
I am sure that there are many gay professional sportsmen around the world and I am sure their team mates are aware of it, and accept that.
The problem is that for a gay player would be impossible to play with thousands of supporters chanting homophobic insults, and in Europe soccer supporters are particularly nasty, so coming out is not an option at the moment.

I think it sets a tone, though. It suggests "we're the ones who will be playing, training, showering, changing with him...and WE don't have a problem with it. So YOU shouldn't either." No, not everyone will see it, and not everyone will take it on board. But I think it's a good move regardless.

I'm stunned. That Colorado College even HAS a hockey team. My college used to play CC as their first game of the football season, and we perpetually lost. That says a lot more about how crappy our team was than how good their was.
