In fact, there is a revolving door of these "petty imprisonments" [less than 6 months in prison], especially on drug charges.

He was fully in his right. Contempt of court is a crime. Acting out as this girl did was clearly a contempt of court. Sometimes an argument can be made either way of whether an act was contempt, but this was pretty clear. Shouting profanities is not going to solve anything.

I felt a litttle bad for her when she was playing with her hair and smiling/giggling...same way I feel a little bad for people who laugh at funerals. I saw it as a nervous reaction more than being disrespectful.

He absolutely had the right to do what he did it's HIS court, HIS HOUSE, and personally, I'm glad he did. When you're in a court of law - show respect, whether you want to be there or not, whether you think you're innocent or guilty.

If you don't show respect for the person who has, at that moment, almost ALL control over your free existence, then you deserve to get hit hard and more than once by his/her authority.

She was being a punk-ass and didn't take the situation seriously. She showed absolute contempt for the court and total disrespect for the court and judge. Her actions show her ignorance. So she got what she deserved and then some. If she had gone in there with a little reservation, a little respect and a little humility, he probably would have let her go with a minimal judgment. But she decided to be a smart-ass instead.

The look on that judge's face reveals how much abuse he has endured over the years at the hands of petty criminals. He was kind and forgiving for quite a bit of the spoiled girl's act. He laughed off several marks of disrespect. He didn't even go for higher than basic bond he levied the first $5,000.

Make no mistake about it, the criminal was the criminal, and the judge represented the People well. The contempt she displayed for the judge is in fact the contempt she felt for the law and the society that created it.

The second link clarifies that this is her first arrest as an adult. As she is 18, there is no reason to believe that she doesn't have a juvenile record, which is completely hidden from the press. The justice system has the obligation to presume innocence -- public opinion does not -- from her display, it is difficult to imagine that she hasn't flaunted the law before.

And, just as Telly misconstrued the facts, Miss Soto may also have been thinking she was being fined, whereas her bail bond was only being raised. Ignorance is powerful here.

Just as it took multiple tries to wipe off the contemptuous smiles and mockery off her face, it is taking long to make her realize that society does care about her crimes. The judge has no onus to appear the patience school teacher. Those years are done when you move into adult court. He has no obligation to hide his anger or offendedness, as to slight the Court is to slight the People of the land.

If she spends 30 days in tears in jail, it wouldn't be enough to catch her up. She is overdue.

The judge was dead on, and the criminal was meted justice. There are limits to anarchy, and she just discovered one of them.

She broke the law to get there in the first place. Her contempt was not just toward the judge but also to the court and to the law which the judge and his court were there to uphold.

She is 18 and legally an adult and therefore responsible for her own actions. Drug use is no excuse for idiocy. The judge upheld the law and gave her a chance to learn a valuable lesson there so she could hopefully become a contributing member of society as opposed to a drugged out asshole who brings harm to herself and/or her loved ones (if she hasn't traded them for more drugs already).

We are each entitled to our own opinions, but it is best if those opinions are based in fact. The way you insist on defending this drug abuser makes me wonder if you maybe aren't in that yourself? If you are abusing drugs please get some help before its too late.

I really don't think you understand what happened in the video, so I'll try to explain it.

The girl was already in jail for possession of drugs. The judge was presiding over her bond case. That would determine how much money her family or friends would have to pay the court to allow her to get out of jail until her court case comes up. She started laughing, but the judge ignored her laugh and set the bond at $5,OO0. If she had left it at that, the case would have been over. She would have gone back to her cell until someone paid the bond to the court, which could have been only a few hours. She would then be let out of jail. The bond is insurance to make sure she appears at her court case.

So, the bond was $5,000.

When she left, she foolishly said 'adios' as she was leaving, an obvious jibe at the judge's name. That was contempt and against the law. He called her back and raised the bond to $10,000. Now, she became stupid and told the judge to fuck off and gave him the finger. That is serious contempt. The judge called her back and sentenced her to 30 days in jail.

No bond anymore. No getting out in a few hours. She must now sit in jail for an entire month.

The judge did nothing wrong. He did what he was allowed to do under the law. He wouldn't have got any money from that bond, and he wouldn't have got any even if it was a fine. The girl played the whole thing as a joke, but the game changed when the judge sentenced her to 30 days. Her face said it all. It wasn't a joke anymore. She wasn't going home. She was going to have to sit in jail for an entire month.

Everything that happened was her own fault. The judge did only what he was allowed to do.
