    And back in those days you had to send your pictures in to be processed - so the only way you would dare take pictures like this is if you had someone that could develop them for you.

    I read that book by Scotty Bowers- the man who claimed to be the 'pimp' to every star in Hollywood from the mid 40's thru the 70s....he was in a few of the hardcore pic sets taken back then- he explained that they took the pictures and gave then directly to people- magazines of that nature didn't really exist- prison sentence for even being in or taking the pics....

    There were different types of photos produced.

    Some of the very early ones (like this) Click image for larger version.  Name: 1905 vin620.jpg  Views: 102  Size: 67.5 KB  ID: 928985 were produced by professional photographers in their studios (which may also have been used for other, more "legitimate" clients during the day) for sale as photographs to a particular client list.

    Others of the same period, were of body builders and these seem to have had a more general circulation. Click image for larger version.  Name: 1900 gay_vintage_posing_47.jpg  Views: 73  Size: 34.8 KB  ID: 928986. You could get away with these because they illustrated the "body beautiful".

    Yet others were amatuer shots - and there were a lot of these taken! Some were just guys fooling around, others were definitely what we would call today - "gay".     Later, the european and British nudist movement of the 1930s gave rise to other amatuer photos - just for circulation among friends: Click image for larger version.  Name: 1933 attachment.jpg  Views: 86  Size: 42.1 KB  ID: 928989

    And in the 1950s came the rise of the US physique magazines. These would publish "artistic" shots with the models in posing pouches, but with fully nude photo sets available for sale.

    Where ever they come from, I love them. I got intersted in my teens when going through the personal effects of an elderly friend I found a number of photos of him and his brothers and mates horsing around at the swimming hole on our local river, one sunny summers day in 1918. They were all wearing neck to knee swimsuits - but looked so happy, hot and cute I just fell in love with the whole idea of vintage male photography.
