Malaysia: How to curb lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender

BUKIT MERTAJAM: About 16,000 parents and teachers have attended the Education Ministry’s seminars on how to curb lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) behaviour. Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said 21 seminars had been held and the ministry would be conducting more.

About 1,000 participants from 156 schools in the North Seberang Prai and Central Seberang Prai districts attended yesterday’s seminar at Politeknik Seberang Prai yesterday. Dr Mohd Puad said that not many people knew how to handle the LGBT issue.

“It is like a disease but it can be cured with early intervention,’’ he told a press conference after opening the seminar.

In September last year, the first seminar in Penang drew controversy when “definitions” were distributed to help pa**rents and teachers spot LGBT tendencies. It said LGBT tendencies could be spotted among boys wearing tight-fitting V-neck T-shirts and carrying large sling bags, and girls who enjoy the company of their own gender.

Dr Puad urged parents to recognise the symptoms to prevent their children from practising the LGBT lifestyle. The seminar was organised by the Putrajaya Consultative Council of Parents and Teachers Asso*ciations with the cooperation of Yayasan Guru Malaysia Bhd.

Sigh. I guess the fact that you can be charged in court for even doing a PDA in public isn't enough "curbing" for the Malaysian government?

Is the Malaysian Education Ministry proposing to ban the use of V neck T shirts and sling bags among boys and preventing girls making friends with other girls as a way to curb LGBT lifestyle?

    Seriously?

I think a major problem for me is literally sins being dishonestly treated as crimes , the pseudo science or very tenuous science proferred to justify mainly in the West treating a solely sinful state as criminal . To treat things like PDAs or nudity or prostitution as social problems to be addressed is essentially irrational . Thought that the same borderline science is used to "prove" creationism and miracles . Funny I do rather approve in contrast of the Saudi Arabian use of beheading for adultery , at least they're being honest . Sin no crime .

Rather radically and doubtless offensive to many I would say all jailable laws concerning sex , drugs , and alcohol use are the same : sins being treated as crimes . Prostitution and nudity ?

Funny, lol. I missed these seminars (I live in Malaysia)! The truth is, the gay scene here actually great, just as long as you don't go public with it. You'll have these seminars/talks from time to time from people who think everyone is born straight (ugh). But hey, you get those kind of LGBT haters/whackjobs in every country.

The funniest thing to me about Malaysia (I came here in 2006) is that if a guy takes a girl home, everyone will be gasping and flipping out over the possibility of the two having sex while they're not married and blah blah and they will flip a bitch switch on like no other about it.

But I as a gay guy can bring another gay guy to my place and bang him like 30 times over the weekend and people just assume it's two friends playing video games or working on a science project.

Also, the censorship over here over LGBT material in videos, songs, etc. is hilarious. Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" gets censored, but here's how. Some radios will play the song like this.

    "I Kissed a ----" (girl is silenced)

Other radio stations play it like

    "I ---- a girl"

I honestly find it funny. But I mean I love this country. It has its issues (but so does every country), but I have a good job, a hunky boyfriend, a house, and I rake in more money than I would working in the US even if I convert the money I earn (the US dollar is stronger than the Malaysian Ringgit).

The v-neck shirt link doesn't work for me, but what's it about? I wear whatever the hell I want and sometimes run to the gas station without a shirt on, and nobody cares.

I think those articles/stories could be about the still underdeveloped/rural parts of Malaysia? But if you live in one of the major cities like I do it's actually great. The malls in the capital city (Kuala Lumpur) are actually 10x better than the malls I've seen growing up in the US. We got clubs, bars, etc. the nightlife is great.

you could make a point that the US is both the predominant world culture and the most aggressively predominantly anti-sexual . Why was Bill Clinton who was after all your president , a fairly important figure , impeached ? Did any other country in the world do anything even similar ?

    I have a theory.

Everyone who believes sexuality is a choice... is bisexual.

We who are completely gay or straight know well that you can't just push a button and make it go the other way.

Bisexuals can't relate to this. They like both genders and therefor have the ability to only act on one and suppress the other. Some of them will start to believe this is the same for everyone and that sexuality is just a choice.

I'm gonna express this theory of mine the next time I speak to someone who believes it's a choose. "Hey you wanna choose to be gay with me tonight? "

I never thought of it like this but that's kinda oddly funny and true at the same time (in my head).

Re: Malaysia: How to curb lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender

Laufey possibly one bisexual counter-argument or point . Issue of "choice" as a determining phenomenon , sexuality-orientation as the result of a conscious decision , we do not choose ( and this effect is commonly culturally accepted ) our taste in food , music , incense , clothes , really almost all other situations in which there can be choice . But sex might be different ? Occurs latterly sexuality may be no more than a matter of taste , point being that there is really no detectable objective rational difference observable between heterosexual and homosexual people , this is not a change in behaviour due to any measureable condition . I really hate salmon , alway have , is there one way of detecting this ?

The curbing method is beyond ridiculous it's not even funny
But I wouldn't expect different from Malaysia; I have a Malaysian friend who tells me so many ridiculous ideas proposed by the government, most of which are, fortunately, not imposed.
I'm not implying/accusing Malaysia is a bad country though. It happens to be Muslim-majority and that is never good news for GBLT people.

Interested to read BreakTheIce's comments. Malaysia sort of regards itself as an upholder of morals, what Dr Mahathir used to call "Asian values" (as opposed to the decadence of the West). And LBGTIQ is firmly discouraged at a Government level, both because of "Asian values", and of course the country's main religion: Islam. And the Malays are extremely proud of their Muslim values.

I've been in and out of Malaysia lots over the past decade or so; I've spent a lot of time there: mainly in KL, but visiting other parts as well. And I agree that the gay scene is thriving and vibrant, if a little underground. I've had some delightful evenings at some of the saunas there (where because of Govt restrictions, condoms and lube aren't provided.)

So it's easy to see red over these comments, but in fact most Malays, as most people the world over, are tolerant, friendly, and understanding.

The video only show Malaysia being surrounded by water. It hardly showed anything else. People might think Malaysia's 90% seaside.

Ain't nobody have time for that.

I am fine with the video actually, I feel awful since I haven't been exploring all the islands in this beautiful country, but they down play the cultural fact and the awesome food we have which is far more superior than sunshine and beaches.

And I am upset they show KL in the end. You know how I feel about KL. A bunch of bogans.

Ironically my favorite tourism places in Malaysia weren't by the seaside at all so I do find that video weird.

I do agree with glasvegas, the food in Malaysia and the culture is far superior to any beach. And the beaches aren't even great in my opinion when I think about the beaches I've visited in the US and in Australia.

My favorite places in Malaysia (for tourism) are probably Melaka, Genting, George Town, & Perak.

George Town in Penang is actually amazing in my opinion. I actually prefer George Town over KL. Stayed there for ~5 weeks last year. Amazing time.

Well it's common for these type of commercials to have a theme targeted at a specific audience.

Sun+beaches seeking group is probably the biggest one.

The beaches don't look like the ones in the commercials. You'll probably be disappointed by it. Not any of the beaches I've been to anyway. Maybe it's somewhere offshore, in the islands... I don't really know.

And yea, food's the thing you should look out for when anyone comes over to Malaysia.

That pretty much goes for most tourist destinations. It always looks better in the brochure/commercial.

We put volcanic eruptions and the northern lights in ours... both of which most tourists won't get a chance to see.

Most commercials are color corrected 99.99%. Unless one has a super high built camera. But even then, those auto adjustments in the camera has already color corrected the shots to a certain mood. Only studying about into it has taught me that. I used to think that some where in the earth it would look bluer or yellower than another part of the world. Like the commercials.

Food is definitely than the beaches. But then I have only went to one beach

If you're going to Malaysia for the beaches, that would be mistake #1.
Food and culture are the main reason people go to Malaysia.
That and playing in amusement park in Genting Highlands.
